Green Woodward died after June 19, 1868 but before August 3, 1869 in a shootout with his son-in-law, Leander?/Louison? Philander "Frank" Spain, husband of Green's daughter, Margaret Woodward. Frank Spain was killed too, and Margaret remarried Robert McDonald Myers. Her son, Frank Spain (Jr) age 3, was also listed in the Myers household. The Guadalupe, TX marriage index includes: R.M Myers and Margaret A. Spain, 3 August 1869.
Donna Boots contributed two accounts of this shootout as recorded by her family:
The following family stories were written about the
Green
F. and Adaline (Collier) Woodward family of Guadalupe Co., Tx. Green’s
family is enumerated in the 1860 Guadalupe Co., Tx census at Lavernia
Post
Office. Green and Adaline’s daughter Margaret married Frank Spain in
Texas.
She and Frank had one son named Frank in 1867. Though one story states
that the murder took place in Goliad, Tx, because of the census
location,
I believe it actually took place in Guadalupe Co, Tx about 1868.
Margaret
later married Robert M. Myers and lived in Goliad Co., Tx. The
storytellers,
Bessie Myers Craighead Vanderzyde and Jessie Schulze Brummer Rodrigues
were Margaret’s grandchildren and great granddaughters of Green F. and
Adaline Woodward.

Bessie’s Story:
From a series of letters from Mrs. Bessie Vanderzyde
(1969 – San Antonio, Tx) to her cousin Jessie Schulze Brummer
The Woodwards are Grandmother Myers family. She was
Margaret
Woodward. During the war she married Frank Spain (at 13 years of age)
and
left with him and went with his family in Oklahoma. He was supposed to
be a Yankee. That is the reason for them having to leave home. She had
one son also Frank Spain.
Grandmother and Frank came back to Goliad, Tx thinking
things would be alright and wanted to see her family and show them her
son but they still had not forgiven her for marrying Frank. she and
Frank
went to see them. Her father and brothers were out cutting wood. Her
mother
asked her not to go see them but she believed her father and brothers
would
forgive her so they went out where they were. They shot Frank and
before
he died shot her father and a great tragedy. She lost her husband and
father
whom she loved very much. Her brothers buried him there and told the
story
that Frank had shot their father and rode away. They also buried his
horse
and saddle. So when grandmother died her brother Abe Woodward came to
our
house and begged grandmother to forgive him. Cried and pleaded but she
was dead. he wanted forgiveness for what they had done to her and made
her keep silent all her life.
Jessie’s Story:
So the story starts with Maggie Woodard and her family.
They had decided to move to Texas, we know that Maggie
and her mother and father and one brother lived together in the Texas
area.
Maggie married a man by the name of Frank Spain and because Frank Spain
was from the Oklahoma area, Maggie’s parents weren’t too happy about
this
marriage. So Frank with his new wife Maggie moved into the Oklahoma
area
to live. In the meantime Maggie became pregnant and her and Frank had a
boy by the name of Frank Spain Jr. Later Maggie thinking that enough
time
had passed, wanted to go back to Texas to see her family.
When they arrived at their old home, Maggie’s mother,
who would be my great Grandmother had told her that she didn’t believe
that enough time had passed and that she didn’t think that Maggie
should
take Frank out with her to see her father and brother were. But Maggie
thought different and her and Frank went out to the field anyway.
A fight did break out between Maggie’s dad, my great
grandfather, and her husband Frank. My great grandfather shot Frank,
but
before he died, Frank Spain also shot my great Grandfather. They both
died
in the field and Maggie’s brother buried Frank Spain right there. They
must have had a funeral for my great Grandfather and Maggie’s brother
made
her not tell anyone about Frank. The story that they told was that
Frank
Spain had shot Mr. Woodard and ran away and no one could find him, so
Maggie
raised her son Frank Spain Jr. without a father or a grandfather.

Benjamin Franklin Woodward was another son of Green F Woodward and Adeline Collier, probably their oldest son. The Marion Co, IL marriage register entry for the Oct 3, 1900 marriage of Benjamin F Woodward and his second wife, Lettie Creekman Preston, states that his parents were Gren Woodward and Adalin (or Adilin) Collins. He stated he was born in Tennessee, but he was much older than age 50 (at next birthday).

Benjamin F Woodward's Civil
War
enlistment papers dated Feb 16, 1865 state he was age 36 and born in
"Robinson
Co", Tennessee. This would indicate his birth date was 1828 or 1829.

The death certificate for Benjamin F Woodward states that he died Oct 29, 1906 in Xenia, IL at age 77 years, -- months, -- days. His place of birth was listed as Kentucky. The names of the physician and undertaker appear on the record, but no informant.
Jo Woodward stated:
He [Benjamin Franklin Woodward] was born in 1829,
although
the date is confused by a couple of other years given in various other
places. The other dates are within two or three years of 1829, if I
recall
correctly. .... Benjamin Franklin
Woodward,
b.26/Nov/1829 in Robertson Co., TN. He died 29/Oct/1906 in
Illinois.
..... The death certificate for B.F. shows him as dying at age 77
-- Oct. 6, 1906 -- in Xenia, IL. His first wife, Sarah Abernathy, died
in 1897. ..... There is also a James in the 1830 Tennessee census
listed as living in Robertson Co. That is the county listed in the
Civil
War papers as the birth county of Benjamin Franklin, Green's son.
[Note: James Woodard of Robertson Co, TN was a descendant of the Edgecombe Co, NC Woodards and not related to our Woodwards. Richard's brother James Woodward was living in Calloway Co, KY in 1830. I do not know what record gives this exact birth date.]
Benjamin Franklin Woodward was married to Sarah A Abernathy at H Abernathy's on April 17, 1855 in Christian Co, KY by Nicholas Lacy, Minister of Bap Ch, in presence of John B Bryan and Geo V Campbell. Witnesses were James Aberneathy (sic) Doct Henry Jesse Angel. (There are no commas, so it's not clear from this document alone if Doct Henry was one man and Jesse Angel was another, or if this was one man named Doct Henry Jesse Angel.)
A posting by Jack Collier concerns daughter Amanda Jane Woodward who married Hezekiah W Smith Collier, son of Tilman T Collier. Jack Collier states, "The only info I have on her parent (and it's sketchy) is they were Mr. & Mrs. A.E. Woodward. The Collier family bible lists Mrs. A.E. Woodward (81 years old) died March 13, 1892."
This would seem to be Adaline E (Collier) Woodward, Green's widow. Adaline has not been found on any censuses after 1860. We have not been able to learn which Collier Bible this was, who has the Bible now, or how Jack Collier obtained this information.
Donna Boots has examined Green's census records and other records that establish the family, and has found documentation to support the following children:
Benjamin F. Woodward (b. bet 1825-1830)
female child (b. bet 1825-1830)
Gabriel (b. 1832)
Marcus L. (b. about 1832)
Thomas J. (b. about 1835)
Richard C. (b. 1837)
William (b. about 1841)
Amanda (b. about 1845)
Mary (possibly same as Martha on 1850 census) (b. 1846)
Margarite (b. about 1850)
Laura (b. 1852)
Tilman (b. 1854)
Descendants of Christopher Columbus Woodward (who
also
married a daughter of Tilman T. Collier) believe that he was another
son
of Green Woodward, but he never appeared on Green's censuses and no
other
documentation has been found to prove his father. Christopher Columbus
Woodward has not been identified as a child on any Woodward census in
1850
or 1860. Holly Dickson has been researching this family. A post-it note
finally explained provided the explanation. Christopher Columbus
Woodward was called Gabriel or Gabe. The writing by Bessie Myers Craighead Vanderzyde remembered him as Margaret
Woodward's brother Abe. A son Gabrial did appear on Green's 1850
census, but we could never find later records for a Gabriel/Gabe
Woodward of this age frame. No one had realized that Gabe was
Christopher Columbus Woodward's nickname.
Although we never found any record that states what
the F stood for in Green F. Woodward, Holly's grandfather said his
mother told him several times that the F stood for Flowers. That one
clue has led us to search the Flowers family. A Green Flowers appeared
on the 1820 Robertson Co, TN census. Perhaps Green Flowers Woodward's
mother was a Flowers, a sister of Green Flowers. We are still
trying to prove this.
On November 24, 2003, Bernard
Haran
Anderson, born February 17, 1917, son of Susannah Elizabeth Woodward
Anderson born 1883 and Dudley Aaron Anderson, grandson of Christopher
Columbus Woodward, stated to me, his granddaughter, Holly Lynn Morris
Dickson, that he remembered his grandfather, CC Woodward, that his
grandfather's real name was Christopher Columbus Woodward, and that the
family called him Gabe/Gabriel. He remembered seeing CC once or twice,
and he remembers his mother talking about the family, and his
grandfather in particular.
On November 24, 2003, Bernard Haran
Anderson, born February 17, 1917, son of Susannah Elizabeth Woodward
Anderson and Dudley Aaron Anderson, great-grandson of Green F.
Woodward, stated to me, his granddaughter, Holly Lynn Morris Dickson,
that he remembered his mother telling him that his great-grandfather's
name was Green Flowers
Woodward. She told him several times because she
thought it was an unusual name.
On November 24, 2003, Bernard Haran
Anderson, born February 17, 1917, son of Susannah Elizabeth Woodward
Anderson and Dudley Aaron Anderson, great-grandson of Green F.
Woodward, stated to me, his granddaughter, Holly Lynn Morris Dickson,
that he remembered his mother talking about Laura Woodward and her
marriage to Monroe Adams. He also remembers her telling him about
Tilman marrying a Spivey girl.
In September/October of 2003 Holly
Lynn Morris Dickson found a photograph of the Woodward family in
Bernard Haran Anderson's house. The picture is a snapshot of the actual
photograph, framed and hanging on a wall. Mr. Anderson didn't remember
where the picture came from, but his granddaughter, Holly, spoke to
Opal Woodward Fulcher, daughter of Kesuth Hale Woodward, granddaughter
of Christopher Columbus Woodward, and she confirmed that she had sent
the picture to him. The actual photograph is in her possession. There
is a post-it note on the back naming each person in the picture. Mr.
Anderson has seen each person at least once except for Lula Woodward
Gammons. The explanation on the Post-It note is as follows:
