These two records should be checked to see if there is further description of the land. With no more information than this, we can't be sure if these are two separate tracts or if William White's tract was reissued to his son George White IF William White had died by 1704. The George White tract seems to have been surveyed by 20 July 1703 since his land is mentioned in the John Croskeys plat of that date. The mention of White's Creek is intriguing, but this doesn't seem to be the same creek as William White's Creek mentioned in the records for the 500a granted to William White I. George White's land and William White I's land do not seem to have adjoined along this creek.

Involves the same land. But this time it's described:
Whereas Sarah Fenwicke widow of Robert Fenwicke, planter, of Berkeley Co, owned 380a, English measure, on  E side of Wando River, within land, formerly bounding S on said Robert Fenwicke & on John Soverance; E on John Hollybush; N on John White & John Croskeys according to plat of original grant dated 8 Oct 1704, signed by Gov Nathaniel Johnson and made to James Bassford planter of Berkeley Co

Obviously this land was near the church. We have not determined who the John White was who was mentioned in these records. We do know that John Croskeys held land that adjoined William White and son George White, but George left only one daughter who sold that land. Below is the Basford plat mentioned above.

Thomas Lynch Esq to John Atchison planter & Mary his wife (daughter of Thomas Lynch) all of Berkeley Co, for natural love & affection, 500a on Wando River, Christ Church Parish, commonly called Croskeys, bounding N on White's Creek, W on land called Wilson's Neck, S on vacant land, E on Mr White. Witnesses: John Linning, Joseph Cook. Before Thomas Dale, J.P.  Robert Austin, Register.

This is a puzzling record. The land was formerly Croskeys, and the number of acres matches the 1703 Croskeys plat. White's Creek is mentioned as a boundary and the land is on the Wando River. All of this matches the 1703 Croskeys plat. The 1715 Stewart deed for the George White land states that the land was bounded WNW on a creek and part of land of John Croskeys. The 1735 Lynch deed states the Croskeys land was bounded on the N by White's Creek and on the E by Mr White. So Mr White could certainly be George White even though his land had been sold to Vanderhorst 20 years before. It wasn't unusual for deeds to refer to land by the name of the original grantee rather than the present owner.

The 540 acre tract that was granted to George White was still owned, undivided, by the Vanderhorst family in 1762. We have not traced it further.

With the records we now have, we have not yet been able to prove whether or not the William White who was the father of George White was the same as William White I who was the father of William White II.

The original landowners and the landowners of 1787 for the land in this vicinity can be found in a deed quoted in
South Carolina Historical Magazine
Vol. 58, 1957
"Wappetaw Congregational Church"
by Petrona Royall McIver
pages 84 and 85

"A one-year lease of 1787 contributes to the history of Wappetaw, the names of the surviving trustees of the post-war period, as the following extract from the document will show:

Murrell, Charvil Wingood, Geo. Barksdale.  Sealed and delivered In the Presence of Nathan Legare, George Airs.

It will be noted that four of the trustees named in the lease did not sign."

A footnote with the article states:

"This lease was given to the compiler of this article. It will be placed with the Presbyterian Historical Foundation at Montreat, N. C. Apparently, it was not recorded at the courthouse in Charleston."

The compilation of these records is the collective work of Elizabeth Girardeau, John Morrel, and Frances Cullom Harper. All three are Murrell/Morrell descendants - as well as Elizabeth's husband. Elizabeth also descends from John White and wife Sarah Severance who moved from Berkeley Co to Craven Co. It is strongly suggested that the original records be obtained whenever possible since abstracts do sometimes contain errors.
