Census Records for George and Lucinda and Descendants

1850   ALDEN
The census of 1850 sees the family settled in Alden, where they will remain for a very long time. George is 38, born in New York; Lucinda is 32, born in Canada. Daughter Ellen is 2, Jerome is 2 months. Ellen died on December 9, 1858 at the age of 10 years 6 months and 15 days, giving a birth date of May 26, 1848 (cemetery records). The census was taken in October; Jerome therefore may have been born in August. The census of 1900 places his birthday in April and that seems far more likely in view of the ages given on the various records. The name on the census looks like FOY and is so indexed. A closer examination of the handwriting on this particular census shows that "a" and "o" were often written in the same way. Since this is the only occurrence of FOY, I think it is safe to assume that it may be ignored.

1860   ALDEN
George died on November 24, 1854, at the age of 42 years and 10 months (cemetery records), leaving Lucinda a widow with a small child. They remained on the place in Alden.

1870   ALDEN
Jerome Fay and Alice Barlow were married on February 1, 1870 (IL State Archives), and lived with Lucinda on the farm. Her full name was Laura Alice, and she sometimes appears as "Laura"; but she seems to have preferred "Alice".

1880   ALDEN
Two sons were born to Jerome and Alice before 1880: Frank and Harrison. The third son, Len, would be born in 1882.

1900   CHEMUNG
1900   ALDEN
Lucinda Parrish Fay died in 1895. Her tombstone gives her dates as 1832 to 1906. The birthdate is definitely wrong (she was married in 1847). The death date is equally incorrect. Had she been living in 1900, she would have been with one of her children, as she was in 1880, and she is not. And there is a newspaper article dating her death precisely (see the sources page). Before 1900 Jerome and Alice moved to Chemung in McHenry County. With them are two of their three sons, Harry and Len. I think that they probably moved after Lucinda's death. Frank married Margaret Fick about 1895, and remained in Alden and farmed on the family farm with Maggie and daughter Pearl. Frank and Margaret seem to have had only the one daughter.

1910   HARVARD, MCHENRY -- Jerome
A good example of a census taker mistake. It is clear from the data that this is Jerome and Alice, and the taker simply copied the name Alice twice.

1910   BRISTOL, KENOSHA, WI
This is one of the more interesting puzzles for me. Why did Frank go to Bristol for a period of time? It is a distance of only about 34 miles, but what was his purpose? He worked as a superintendant in the milk bottling factory. Prior to this he farmed; in 1920, he is working as a mechanic in the milk factory. Today this could be a commute for work; but was it then?

1910   WOODSTOCK, MCHENRY CO
Harry, who was still at home with his parents in 1900, has now married, had a son, lost his wife and remarried. In the records of 1910, he is seen with Francis and his son by his first marriage, LaVerne. Francis and Harry have been married a year, and do not have children together.

1910   HEBRON, MCHENRY
Len, also at home in 1900, has married Ragnhild. They have only the one adopted daughter Lillian.

1920  HARVARD
1930  CHEMUNG, WOODSTOCK

Len is in Harvard in 1920, with Ragnhild and four children; by 1930 the family has separated, Len and Ragnhild being divorced. Ragnhild, now called Gertrude, moved to Woodstock with her new husband, and Len moved to Chemung. The 1930 record for Gertrude Bartlett was a bit difficult to find; there were corrections on the page, and the indexer was quite creative, listing the family as "Warner H Bartelite [and] Gurabed."

1920 and 1930   Frank and Harry

There are not a great many surprises in 1920 and 1930 for Frank and Harry. Frank returned from Bristol before 1920, which finds him in Harvard with Margaret and Pearl and Pearl's husband; the group is still together in 1930. Harry is in Woodstock 1920 and 1930; by 1930 Beatrice is out of the house, but Kenneth is still with his parents.
