Charles Fay was born October 23, 1817, in New Braintree, MA (see the vital records for the town). Orlin, who lists him on page 58, speaks of a trip to Lawrence, Kansas in 1856, and then a move to Minnesota, "where he enlisted in the 6th Reg't, Minn. Vols." He seems rather to have belonged to the 7th Infantry Regiment, 3rd Battery Light Artillery. There is a pension file for him; he claimed a pension toward the end of the 19th century, and Emeline applied for and received the widow's pension after his death. In 1898, the date of Orlin's last knowledge, he is in Wisconsin. He died between 1900 and 1910, but the date is not yet clear.

The marriage intentions of Charles and Emeline (Emily) Bacon are recorded for February 27, 1841 in New Braintree and in Barre. She was the daughter of Henry and Julia Whiting Bacon. Both Henry and Julia belong to the household of Charles and Emeline in 1860; and Henry is listed as head of house for the family in 1870 (Julia is gone by 1870).

The first two children of Charles and Emeline were born in New Braintree: Juliaetta and Julianna, twins born September 17, 1843, and obviously named for Emeline's mother. Julianna died in 1847. The vital records mistakenly identify the twin who died as Juliaetta, but Orlin's identification is confirmed by later records, where the surviving twin is called Juliette, Etta J. or J. Etta.

The birth of Charles Edward, the third child of Charles and Emeline, on April 1, 1845, is recorded in Barre; his death six months later took place in Ware, according to Orlin.

In 1850, the census records of New Braintree show Charles, Stephen, Sarah, and Seth living with their parents Stephen and Clarissa. Julietta, now 8, is also in the household, which includes three others, Eliza Whaleing, Patrick Grain and William Dunn. There is no listing for Emeline, nor is she to be found in New Braintree. There is an Emeline Fay of exactly the right age in the Lunatic Asylum in Worcester in 1850. It is not clear whether she is patient or worker. However, there is too little information to be able to identify her. It seems more likely that she was simply omitted from the list of people on the farm of Stephen and Clarissa.

The Kansas trip is supposed to have taken place in 1856. There is possible confirmation in the appearance of a Charles Fay on the voter registration list in Juniata, Kansas, in December of 1855. Juniata is about 160 miles from Lawrence. There is no further information given, however, so this cannot be considered a positive identification. There is a Bacon family, but it is not the family of Henry and Julia, in the same area of Kansas at the time.

The Kansas stay did not last long in any event, and by 1860, Charles and Emeline, and Henry and Julia Bacon are in Washington County, Minnesota. Julietta (J. Etta), 18, is living with her grandmother Clarissa and aunt Sarah in the household of her uncle Moses Holden in New Braintree.

In Minnesota, Charles and Emeline had two more children: Stephen Ellsworth, born 10/17/1861, before Charles joined the army, and George Eugene, born 2/8/1865, after Charles' return. Both boys are reported in the census of 1870 and of 1880. George died in 1886.

Juliette (Etta) is with her parents again in 1870 in Afton, MN; but in 1880, she has moved to Stillwater and is boarding and teaching school. In 1900, she is in Minneapolis. She died on 4/23/1919.

In 1900, Charles and Emeline live in Warren, Saint Croix County, Wisconsin. After Charles' death, Emeline moves in with Stephen and his wife Alice in Raymond, Kandiyohi County, Minnesota. Emeline died on 1/28/1919 just a short while before her daughter Juliette.

The only one of Charles' and Emeline's children to marry and raise a family was Stephen Ellsworth. Born 10/17/1861 in Minnesota, he remained in Minnesota and died there on 10/09/1914, thus before both his sister and his mother. He married about 1885; her name was Alice A., but repeated searches have not revealed her maiden name. Stephen and Alice had just one child, Eva Frances, born on 12/10/1888, and died July 24, 1967.

In 1900, Stephen, Alice and Eva are living in Raymond Village, Edwards Township, Kandiyohi County. Alice was born in VT in April of 1865. This, however, must be taken with some degree of doubt, since the same census reports Stephen's birth as October of 1860, which disagrees with all the other records. In 1910, they are still in Raymond, now joined by Emeline.

In 1911, Eva Frances Fay married Jay Earl Clough. Stephen's death in 1914, and Emeline's and J. Etta's deaths in 1919, left Alice alone; in 1920, she was living on Nicollet Avenue in Minneapolis by herself, quite close to her daughter Eva.

The founder of the Clough line reached America about twenty years before John Fay: John Clough arrived in 1635. A large number of Clough lines and descendants have been tracked, and the results published in The Genealogy of the Descendants of John Clough of Salisbury, Massachusetts, volumes 1 (1952) and 2 (1966). The following line for Jay Earl Clough has been extracted from those two volumes and can be compared with Eva's descent from John Fay.
