Betsy's Descendants: Overview

This has been an interesting line to research. Orlin has almost nothing about Eunice; he mentions that she was born May 4, 1791, married Abraham Story, resided in Mansfield, Vermont, and had two children, David and John.

I began by looking at LDS, where I saw the above information entered, and a little more. According to LDS, Eunice died May 24, 1837, and Abraham died August 21, 1837. That would make Eunice 46 and Abraham 48. I thought that was rather young for Abraham; women tended to die earlier. Then I started looking at the census records. I found Abraham in Underhill (Chittenden County) in 1820 and in Mansfield in 1830. In 1810, Abraham seems to be living still in his father John's household in Underhill. By 1820, he has his own household, and we see one male 26-45 (Abraham was 31), one male under 10 (David, born 1815 or 1816), and one female 26-45 (Eunice was 29). In 1830, Abraham had moved next door to Eunice's father Nathan Fay; the census records one male 40-50; one female 40-50; and two sons, one 5-10 (John, born 1822) and one 15-20 (David was 15). The two forms of the name 'Abraham' and 'Abram' are common.
The following map detail from Sotzmann's 1797 work may help to explain the movement of this family. The counties in existence in 1797 in this area were Chittenden, Franklin and Orleans. Underhill and Mansfield were next door to each other and both in Chittenden County. In 1835, Lamoille County was set off and incorporated, taking 4 towns from Orleans County, 5 from Franklin; 2 from Washington, and Mansfield from Chittenden. Thus one may see Mansfield, Chittenden County, AND Mansfield, Lamoille County. In 1839, in addition, Mansfield was divided up; the 2 square miles on the west side of Mansfield were given to the town of Underhill, thus again becoming part of Chittenden County. The eastern part of Mansfield was given to Stowe, and Mansfield itself was dissolved. After 1839, Mansfield does not exist legally, although the name continues to be part of Underhill in some cases.   (I owe part of this material to the Vermont GenWeb page for Lamoille County, and part of it to a telephone conversation with a very helpful woman at the Vermont Historical Society.)

Abraham is living in Underhill in 1840. With him are: one male 15-20 (John b. 1822, age 18), one male 20-30 (David b. 1816, age 24). Abraham is in the 50-60 group (b. 1789, age 51). The woman of the family is in the 50-60 age group. If we accept Eunice's death as occurring in 1837, then Abraham has remarried. In 1850, Abraham is married to Anna. There is one item that gives the name of the woman he married as second wife:

Name: Abraham Story
Spouse: Anna Woodworth
Parents: Abraham Story , Lucy Story
Birth Place: Essex, Chebacco Parish, MA
Birth Date: 23 December 1789
Marriage Date: 28 September 1838
Death Place: Underhill, Chittenden, VT
Death Date: 21 August 1837

Notice that this accepts the date of 1837 for Abraham's death, but at the same time places his second marriage in 1838. It is clear from the censuses of 1850 and beyond that Abraham did NOT die in 1837; and this is just further evidence. What we now see is Eunice's death in May 1837; and Abraham's remarriage a little over a year later; the year waiting period was normal.

Building the line of descent for David and for John was relatively easy. In the course of working it up, I found the excellent work of Barbara Kennedy, which is available both on ancestry.com and on RootsWeb. Her material allowed me to complete several marriages and fill in several items, and I am grateful to her.

David's line ends early (see below for explanation), but John's continues beyond 1930. One thing that should be emphasized here, though, is the role that the census records of 1860 and 1870 played. In 1850, John was married to Rachel Purington, and was living in Underhill with her and her mother Delia. Delia lived a long life and remained with John until the end, helping to form a link between the generations, even after Rachel died and John remarried. Next door to John was an Abram Story, and it was the presence of Abram here next to John that gave me the first indication that perhaps Abraham had not died in 1837. This became certainty for me when I saw them in 1860 and 1870. The three men -- David, John and Abraham -- lived in neighboring houses. Given the ages of the men, the information contributed by Orlin and by others who had recorded names and dates in various places, and the fact that they remained together for so many decades, one must conclude that this is one family.

DESCENDANTS OF EUNICE FAY AND ABRAHAM STORY
OVERVIEW

Eunice Fay (5/4/1791 - 5/24/1837) married Abraham Story (12/23/1789 - after 1870), probably between 1810 and 1814. They had two sons, David and John. They may have had one daughter, Eunice, but this is not certain. If so, she died young, for she does not appear in any of the census records we have.

I find David in the census of 1850, David, Mary and Eunice in 1860 and all four of them in 1870. I do not see any of them in 1880. Nor have I been able to find out what happened to them, although IGI does record death dates for two. Charley provides yet another question; at the time of his birth, Mary was 52 (evidence of census of 1870 AND 1860). Not impossible; but how likely for a second child?

Eunice died in 1837, and Abraham Story married Anna Woodworth on September 28, 1838. They seem to have had no children.
