Muriel Branstetter was listed on 12 April 1930 as a daughter living with Murray Waldo Branstetter on the 1930 census Miami, Ottawa County, Oklahoma.2
Obituary of Muriel Branstetter appeared on 26 January 2011 at Nogales International, Nogales, Santa Cruz County, Arizona, as follows: Muriel Noon, a member of one of Santa Cruz County’s pioneer ranching families, died on Jan. 20 at Holy Cross Carondelet Hospital in Nogales, just one week after she was diagnosed with metastasized cancer. She was 97. Born in 1913 in Oklahoma, she first came to Sonoita in 1939. She had been studying nursing in St. Louis and working at the Nursing Hospital there, but visited Sonoita on her way to California for a vacation. It was here that she met her husband, Horton Noon, at a community dance. Married in 1941, they managed the White Mountain Hereford Ranch and the Sopori Ranch before settling at the Rain Valley Ranch in Elgin in 1944. Muriel, in an interview last year, remembered that she made do with no electricity and had to send laundry into Nogales via the mail carrier who came out to the ranch. In 1945 the Noons moved to the Oak Bar Ranch between Patagonia and Nogales. Muriel would have to drive the dirt road to Tucson once a month for groceries. Their three children, Barbara, Ted and Robert, attended school in Nogales and were all involved in 4-H. Muriel became a 4-H leader. “I learned to sew by teaching the kids,” she said with a laugh.
In 1964 the Oak Bar Ranch was sold to developers, but the Noons were able to purchase land on the west side of State Route 82, which they named the Oro Blanco Ranch. Although Horton died in 1980, Muriel and her son Robert continued ranching and breeding Charolais cattle, a breed that the Noons had introduced into Southern Arizona.
Muriel helped to develop the Family Guidance Center in Nogales in 1969, and served on the center’s board for years. She also served as the public health nurse for Santa Cruz County.
Always active
Muriel was a very active member of the Santa Cruz County Cowbelles since 1951, the Arizona Cattlegrowers Association, the Southern Arizona Cattlemen’s Protective Association, and the Association of American National Cattlewomen. She was a member of the Pimiera Alta Garden Club and an avid bridge player.
“She was one of the nicest people I’ve ever known,” said Janice Johnson, fellow Cowbelle and owner of the Hilltop Gallery in Nogales. “She was the quintessential ranch wife.”
“There are some people who have an indomitable spirit and grit, and that’s Muriel,” added Carolyn Wemlinger of the Nogales River Cowbelles.
At 97, Muriel was still driving, attending Cowbelle meetings and playing bridge regularly. She communicated by e-mail with friends and family, and even baked 400 Mexican wedding cookies this past fall for her granddaughter’s wedding.
She had a no-nonsense, practical approach to life. When asked what was the greatest advance she had seen in her lifetime, she answered immediately, “The elimination of screw worm in cattle and the invention of the cell phone.”
She once remarked that “I never learned to milk a cow because then I would have had to do it.”
When she found out the week before she died that she was gravely ill, she accepted this in her characteristic practical, down-to-earth manner.
“I’ve had a long and good life,” she said. Talking to her grandchildren gathered at her bedside, she reportedly told them, “I will have no long faces.”.
