Born near Smithfield on May 6, 1865, a son of Wilson and Lamira (Beadles) Rector, he was married April 11, 1889 to Carrie Fate, who survives. Children are: Mrs. Robert (Jessie) Ewan, Bushnell; Mrs. Burl (Lena) Baughman, Kewanee; and Russell, Smithfield. A son, Edwin, died in infancy. Brothers are: H.J., G.E., and M.E. of Smithfield; B.N. Rector or Deerfield, Kan; and L.J. Rector of Lockhart, Minn. Mr. Rector farmed until about 20 years ago, when he moved to town. He was a member of the modern Woodmen and of the Cuba Masonic Lodge. Funeral services were held at the Methodist Church in Smithfield with Rev. Ralph Dean officiating. Burial was in Baughman Cemetery.

She was born on Feb. 13, 1894 in Smithfield, a daughter of Edwin and Carrie (Fate) Rector. She was married on Dec. 31, 1916 in Smithfield to the Rev. Byrl Baughman, who survived her. A former teacher in the Kellogg School, Mrs. Baughman left Canton in 1929, moving to Kewanee where she operated a beauty shop. She was a graduate of Western State college, Macomb. She was a member of the Kewanee First Methodist Church, and of the Order of Eastern Star. Besides her husband, Mrs. Mary Ruth Doye of Bradford and two grandchildren; a sister Mrs. Robert (Jessie) Ewan, Bushnell; and a brother, Russell F. Rector of Smithfield. Lena was a very caring person who often came back to Smithfield to help care for her parent in their old age. When her mother was seriously ill, she was moved to a Kewanee nursing home where Lena could be close enough to be able to help care for her. Her funeral was held at the Kewanee First Methodist Church with burial in Pleasant View Cemetery.¹

     Obituary of Martin Fate Rigby appeared as follows: Martin Rigby's obituary says of Caleb Rigby, "Mr. Rigby's ancestors were of English extraction and were members of Cromwell's army prior to their emigration to America and were related by marriage to the Cromwell family. [Martin's] father, Caleb P. Rigby, was a native of Virginia, but removed in early life to Licking county, Ohio. [likely after the death of his father at an early age when his mother sent his brother Washington Augustus Rigby to live with an uncle there.] In September 1846, [Caleb] set his face toward the west and came to Cedar county, Iowa, arriving in Tipton, on election day while the people were voting for the adoption of the new constitution and the admission of the state into the Union. [Martin], as a lad of ten years, drove and cared for a team of horses on this trip from Ohio. [Caleb] located on a farm in Fremont township, near Mechanicsville, where Martin attended district school in a log school house." From 1831 to 1851, Caleb's mother Elizabeth lived with the family and helped with the children.

Jesse left Iowa for the Hood River region of Oregon, and Thomas is listed in successive census records as living in Winfield, Kansas in 1880; then Skagway, Alaska in 1900; followed Mayfield, Idaho in 1920. Both Jesse and Martin served the 24th Iowa Volunteer Infantry Company B under the leadership of their cousin William Titus Rigby. Jesse later became a minister.
