Jesse N. Fate Was Laid to Rest
Monday, After 78 Useful Years.
----------
A REAL PIONEER
----------
Jesse N. Fate died at his home three miles northwest of Red Oak at 8 o’clock Saturday evening, Feb. 27, 1932, from complication of diseases incident to old age. He was in his 79th year, and his final illness was of three months’ duration.
Funeral services were held from the Christian church at 2:30 o’clock Monday afternoon, the sermon being by Rev. Ira E. Carney, his pastor. Singing was by Mrs. Ira Carney, Mrs. Roy Breese, Clarence Totty and Arthur Hersman, with Mrs. Dale Petty accompanist. Pallbearers were C. W. Miller, W. H. Longstreet, J. B. Adams, W. J. Langdon, Carl Oliver, F. A. Wolfe, Dale Petty and Dr. C. T. Hays. Burial was in the Red Oak cemetery.
Here from a distance for the funeral included Mrs. C. E. Cassell, Henning, Minn; Martin Fate, Barger, Texas; Mr. and Mrs. I. S. Bishop and family, Mr. and Mrs. Bird Bishop, Elliott; Mr. and Mrs. W. Bishop and family, Coburg; Mr. and Mrs. Clayton Sampson, Yorktown. Attendance was large in spite of most discouraging road conditions.
Born at Gratiot, Liken county, Ohio, Nov. 4, 1853, Jesse Nolan Fate moved with his parents eight years later to Boone county, Iowa. The year 1875 found him on a farm near Stennett, and on Oct. 14, 1880, his marriage to Miss Cassie Watson occurred at Lewis. Seven children were born to them, one son, Seth, dying in 1919. Mrs. Fate died Feb. 24, 1920. The following children, Mrs. Clayton Sampson, Yorktown; Martin Fate, Barger, Tex; Forrest Fate, Casper, Wyo; Mrs. C. E. Cassell, Henning, Minn; Mrs. Wm. Bishop, Coburg and Mrs. I. S. Bishop, Elliott, survive both father and mother. Brothers and sisters who survive Mr. Fate are Frank Fate and Mrs. S. A. Tice, Earlham; Mrs. W. A. Hinton and Mrs. E. A. Mecum, Des Moines, Mrs. M. L. Snyder, Long Beach, Calif.
Sensible, Honorable Pioneer.
The mere statement that Mr. Fate came to the county in 1875 does not adequately convey any idea of his worth in development of the community. Coming here with knowledge of sound building construction, he built or supervised the erection of many of the stone buildings around Stennett. He supervised the construction of the Montgomery county court house in 1890, and was inspector of Red Oak’s first paving. He built, supervised or advised for owners for years, tanks, silos, tiling, or what they needed. His work was good, his judgment sound, and his word or advice never questioned.
Mr. Fate was a devout man, elder in the Christian church of Red Oak, regular in attendance to its services as well as to those of the Sunday school for many years. As a member of the Odd Fellow lodge and the Modern Woodmen, he had for a long time enjoyed the fraternal friendship and opportunity for doing good as exemplified by their teaching.
He was a Democrat, one whose honesty, common sense, sincerity and practical example, always commanded the profound respect of not only the members of his own party but leaders in the opposing party as well.
In religious life, business, work, social or fraternal affairs, Jesse Fate was sound, gentle. He was a fine, well-balanced, honest, lovable man.

John D. Fate Silver King tractors were produced by the Fate-Root-Heath Company of Plymouth, Ohio. The company was founded by John Fate in 1884 and was originally called the "J.D. Fate Company". After several mergers over the years, the final company name of Fate-Root-Heath came about in 1919. The first tractor produced was actually called the "Plymouth" tractor and was powered by a 20 HP 4-cylinder engine with a 3x4" bore and stroke. The four speed transmission had a top speed of 25 mph! After more than 200 of these were built, the Chrysler Corporation who had begun making a "Plymouth" car sued the Fate-Root-Heath company for the right to use the "Plymouth" name. It was decided that since the Chrysler Corporation manufactured their car MANY years after Fate-Root-Heath made their tractor, that Chrysler Corp was not entitled to the exclusive use of the "Plymouth" name. To make a long story short, Fate-Root-Heath did not want to tangle with such a large corporation and hence sold the "Plymouth" name to Chrysler Corp for a single dollar bill!
