It has been said that James Valentine wanted to become andstudied to become a doctor. He was unable to continue hisstudies when his father, Benjamin G. Valentine, died because hehad to care for his ailing mother when his younger brother,Gilbert, refused to do so. It has also been said that eventhough he did not go to medical school he was highly regardedfor his knowledge and most women in Yell County called upon himto deliver their babies. He later became a blacksmith by tradeand a farmer by necessity.
