Fanchers have been in America for more than 360 years! Our American Fancher surname originated as a variant spelling of the English surname Fanshawe. The first known documented surname spellings appear as variations of Fancy, Fancie, Fansey, etc. in the New Haven Colony in 1643. In the next generations, the original surname spelling of Fanshaw was predominant in the Connecticut Colonial records of our ancestors. It was at this same time that the variant Fancher spelling made its first appearance in 1717 Connecticut, and by the end of the 18th century had developed into the most common spelling of our surname. Even then, some branches of our family continued to use Fanshaw, a spelling they sustain to this day.

       FANCHER CIVIL WAR RECORDS PROJECT

This database contains the records of the approximately 190 Fanchers who served during the Civil War, compiled from more than 20 different sources.
The majority of these soldiers have been identified, but a few still remain unknown to us. Part of this project is to also identify where these soldiers are buried, and if there is a Civil War marker on their grave.

            Fancher Finder powered by FreeFind

This website is full of Fanchers! If you are looking for a Fancher it is suggested that you consider a search for a given (first) name, a locale, a date, or use other available information to narrow down your search results.

Search hint: On your Browser bar select Edit, then Find (on this page) to search a page for  specific information.

In the records on this Site, the Fancher surname spelling appears exactly as it was spelled in the original record. So a search for "Richard Fancher" will not give you records where a variant surname spelling was used.

In most cases, the records on this Site are sorted by Event > State > County > Town > Alphabetically by Given (First) Name, (regardless of the variant spelling of the Fancher surname).
