SOMERS FALKINBURGE
Somers Falkinburge was the ninth and last child of John and Mary Falkinburge. His birth was the only one of the nine children not to be recorded. The best guess at his birth date based on available data would be between 1781-1785. One source places his birth at Millerstown, Pennsylvania. He was probably born on a trip to Pennylvania in 1783. The enumerator on 1830 US Federal Census Population Schedules neglected to inscribe Somers’s age bracket. His name was spelled, Faulkinburg in that enumeration. The 1840 census of Leavenworth, Crawford County, Indiana shows his age at the time as of 50 and under 60 years of age.
Somers was taken by his parents to Rye Township, Cumberland County, Pa. in 1785. Nothing of his years in Pennsylvania has come to light. He returned to New Jersey in 1806 where he joined his brother Joseph and sister Talitha at Dennis Creek, Cape May County. Joseph Falkinburge was already enjoying business and political success at this time and it may have been at his behest that Somers came to Dennis Creek. Like his brother, Somers was also a tailor. The records indicate he was engaged in that work from the time of his arrival. He is believed to have taken over the daily operation of Joseph’s tailoring business.
Somers was also a “jack-of-all-trades” and hooped barrels, shod horses, set wagon tires, etc. He often paid his debts by performing some service in lieu of money. When the Dennis Creek South Branch Meadow Company began construction of a sluice to stop the creek in 1815, he was hired by the enterprise to help in the sluice construction at the rate of $1.50 per day.
Somers served in the Cape May County Militia and was appointed captain of the 1st Battalion, 1st Regiment, Cape May County, on April 9, 1816. He received his commission on May 20th. This was a light infantry outfit. The organization was active until 1835. The ledger book of Jonathan Johns, storekeeper, mentions that Falkinburg was given a militia fine in 1822 of $2.00. Fines were levied for nonattendance as opposed to exemptions which were purchased for a fee of $5.00.
His first few years at Dennis Creek he lived a bachelor’s life. He very frequently purchased quarts of rum, pints of beer, cider, and tobacco. That lifestyle appears to have ended when he married in 1809. He continued to hunt with his shot gun. His social habits became confined to an occasional quart of gin or brandy; though these incidents became few and far between. Tea and coffee became the standard beverages in the Somers Falkinburge household.

Somers Falkinburge and Elizabeth Sullivan were married by Shagmar Hewitt at Cape May on April 23, 1809. Elizabeth Sullivan is believed to have come from Cumberland County, New Jersey, although Wordon gives her birthplace as Cape May County. Elizabeth Sullivan was born between 1871 and 1790. The records of the Philadelphia Conference (Methodist) for Dennis Creek No.3, mention the name of Eliza Falkinburg as a member in 1835-36.
John Blackman was the local physician down at Dennis Creek. Dr. Blackman’s ledger book covered the period 1805-1838. The Falkinburges were among his patients and the ledger account of Somers Falkinburge is reprinted below.

I give and divise unto my grand daughter Susan Leaming...the house and lot where my brother Somers formerly resided.
-Last Will & Testament of Joseph Falkinburge-
In 1813, Joseph Falkinburge and Samuel Laycock purchased the Jeremiah Ludlam tract of 369 acres beginning at Sluice Creek and running along present day Delsea Drive and continuing to South Dennis. When Joseph Falkinburg bought out Laycock’s share he set off one acre two quarters and twenty-five perches along the road to Dennis from Goshen. This lot was set off for Somers and a house was built upon it. It was known as the Somers Falkinburg House and Lot. It is believe that Somers hired the team, cleared the woods, and constructed the house in the summer of 1820. Except for a trace of the old lane (still visible in 1983), nothing remains to remind us that anyone ever lived there. The property passed to Susan Leaming upon the death of Joseph Falkinburge.
The paper trail on him is rather limited. Somers was a witness on numerous Cape May County deeds store ledgers. The only court record for which the name of Somers Falkinburge could be located was in the docket of James Townsend. This was a case where he assumed a note that had been assigned through a number of individuals. He not getting satisfaction, Somers sought relief through the court system. The disposition of that case is reprinted below as inscribed in Townsend’s Docket book.

“The village of College Corner was laid out by Gideon T. HOWE, May 5, 1837. It is located mostly in OH, in Butler and Preble Counties, but is also partly in IN, in Union County. The village, as it was platted, beongs to Butler County, but the various additions have changed the original intentions of the founder somewhat. The land round about is fertile and level. The great thoroughfare, already mentioned in speaking of the roads, was the pike, which afforded an excellent outlet for all the outlying country in the West...
In the Spring of 1837 the Rev. George M. BESWICK, of the Indiana Conference, organized the M. E. Church at College Corner. BESWICK has now been dead these twenty years. This Church was organized at the house of John J. MURPHEY, in a little log house east of Ramsey's store. Thirteen members constituted the original roll, as follows: John and Desire MURPHEY, Samuel and Barbara RIDENOUR, Brice and Eliza PURCIL, Broomfield BOONE and wife, Joseph KITCHEN, who was a local preacher, and wife, Mrs. Margaret RIDENOUR, Caleb SHERA, and Sarah his wife. Mrs. Barbara RIDENOUR, Mrs. BOONE, Mrs. KITCHEN, Mr. and Mrs. SHERA are still living. For a few years this point of worship belonged to the Centerville circuit, but was soon changed to the College Corner and Liberty circuit, which name it still retains. The parsonage is located at Liberty.
Among the first preachers were Mr. HASTY, of Indiana, who was here in 1837; John KIGERS and Landa HAVENS, both here two years, the former of whom is still living in IN; Greenbury R. BEEKS, who was with the people for two years, and who is now dead; Mr. KELSO, who traveled with BEEKS; Joseph TARKINGTON, who was here for one year, and who now lives in Greensburg, IN; William HIBBEN, who died in Indianapolis one year ago; W. W. SNYDER, who was here after 1845, and who stayed for two years, now of South Bend, IN; John S. WINGATE, another traveling preacher, who was here for three years altogether, and now of Greensburg, IN; and Mr. FALKINBURG, here in 1855, who was the pastor in charge for two years. P The first place of worship this society had was a frame building, erected in 1838, which cost $800; the second house, a brick, was put up in 1855, and cost $3,500. It stands on the old site. P This society is a branch of the Oxford Methodist Church. The land on which the house stands was given by Samuel RIDENOUR. THe present preacher is the Rev. R. R. BALDWIN. The membership numbers about two hundred.
