Update History
This website was started in about 2001 on a now-defunct web hosting service called Xoom (briefly changed to NCBi), but has been hosted by Rootsweb since late 2001 (see the Rootsweb Review from its premiere). Below is a history of updates to the site since November 2002, in reverse chronological order.
Feb 7, 2009. Information from WV vital records added to the Derenberger family. Information from Canadian death records added to the Ontario Terryberry family. Edith Terryberry of Philadelphia, formerly unconnected, is now known to be a daughter of Herman Terryberry of Ontario, who later moved to Philadelphia. Information from the Texas death records added to the Derryberry family. Finally, a new, unconnected family has been added, that of Jacob D. Barker of Delaware Co., PA, now known to have been a Durrenberger immigrant from Switzerland. Many thanks to Becky Ekins, Mary Parks, Beth Rippel, and Philip Barker for information about this family.
Dec 14, 2008. Information about the Derryberry family from Alcorn Co., MS funeral home records and many other sources has been added
Oct 26, 2008. More information about the Derryberry family from Tennessee and North Carolina marriage and North Carolina death records has been added. Also, much information from published books of local (typically county-level) U.S. history has been added. Many such books were written between about 1880 and 1920, and contain biographical sketches of prominent local residents. The genealogical information in these sketches appears reasonably trustworthy, as the books were written contemporary to the subjects.
May 29, 2008. A huge amount of new information on the Derryberry family (including Dayberry, Deberry, and now Derry and Derrie) has again been added, with more corrections as well. Again thanks to Gloria and Bob Derryberry for assistance. Information from the 1900 census, WWI draft registration cards, and Tennessee and Missouri marriage records has been added. A new, unconnected Derryberry family has been added, that of William Jordan Derryberry of Benton Co., TN.
Feb 8, 2008. A great deal of new information about the Derryberry family has been added, and many corrections have been made. Many thanks to Gloria Derryberry, Guy Fay Derryberry, and John Dayberry for collaboration and assistance. All Derryberrys I have been able to locate in the census records up to and including 1880 are now included. The Derryberry family of Dade Co., GA has been merged with the larger family by tentatively adding the founder of this branch as a son of Jacob and Christiana Derryberry of Warren Co., TN. A new possible Derryberry has been added, namely the family of John Derreberry/Dayberry/Deberry of Itawamba Co., MS. Their connection with the rest of the family is unknown. Thanks also to Linda Kekumu for an important correction to the children of Christopher Terryberry of Glanford Twp., ON.
Nov 7, 2007. Again, many new updates to the site. Additions to the site include further information on the families of George Durrenberger of Middlesex Co., CT and Edward M. Terryberry of Washington, DC. The six earliest Derreberry men of Burke Co., NC are now shown as brothers, and the notes for each of these men have been expanded and reorganized considerably. The Kentucky Derryberry families have been expanded and corrected, with the putative DeBerry descendants of Henry Derryberry and John R. Derryberry added. The father of John W. Derryberry/DeBerry is now shown as Henry Derryberry rather than John R. Derryberry. Two unconnected Derryberry families have been added: the Derryberry family of Russell Co., VA (descendants of Rebecca Derryberry, probably a widow), and the Derryberry family of Dade Co., GA (descendants of widow Cassie Derryberry). Finally, the families of Jacob Durrenberger of Passaic Co., NJ, a Swiss immigrant, and Martin Dirrenberger of McHenry Co., IL, an Alsatian immigrant, have also been added.
Jun 4, 2007. After nearly a year, I have finally updated the site again. There is too much new information to describe here, but there have been significant additions to the Terryberry family of Ontario, the Derreberry and Derryberry families, and other branches. Two new discrete families have also been added, namely George Durrenberger an Alsatian immigrant who settled in Middlesex Co., CT, and Wilhelm Durrenberger of Elgin Twp., Kane Co., IL, a Swiss immigrant. Edward M. Terryberry (b. 1866), previously unconnected to the rest of the Ontario Terryberry family, has now been shown to be a son of David Terryberry and Rachel Gregory.
_ Jul, 2006. A large amount of new information has been included, including: (1) a more complete account of the descendants of John Terreberry and Phoebe Slough of Welland Co., Ontario, thanks to Betty Harley; (2) additions and corrections to the WV Derenberger / Dernberger family based on publicly available death certificates; (3) additions to the descendants of Jacob Durrenberger of Buffalo, NY, thanks to Dale Longnecker; (4) additional information on other Ontario Terryberry families, with thanks to Donna Fortman; (4) the family of Jacob Durrenberger (b. 1850), an Alsatian immigrant to New York City, has been added as an unconnected family; (5) miscellaneous information about various American families from WWI and WWII draft cards. Finally, another family in the Erie Co., NY area, previously believed to be Bavarian, is now known to be an Alsatian Durrenberger family, namely that of Michael Durrenberger of Tonawanda, NY. He is believed to have come from Mertzwiller, but his connection to the other families in the database is currently unknown.
Feb 13, 2006. Again, more new and corrected information on the Terryberry family of Ontario has been added, thanks in large part to contributions from Donna Fortman. The surname of Philip Terriberry of Hunterdon Co., NJ and his descendants has been modified to Teraberry, and some additional information added. Also, now that DNA information has supported the idea that the Derreberry/Derryberry family originating in Burke Co., North Carolina in the 1770's is a branch of the Durrenberger family, I have begun adding information on this family. This is a work in progress, and in its early stages, so I expect errors at this point. I would appreciate any additions or corrections from Derryberry family researchers. Some additional information on the Derreberry family can be found here.
Dec 2, 2005. More new and corrected information on the Terryberry family of Ontario has been added, thanks to the availability of new vital records and the 1911 Canadian census on the internet. Also, a very belated thanks to Jim Lockhart for providing information on the children of John Peter Derenberger and Christina Staats of Jackson Co., WV some months ago.
Aug 22, 2005. New information about the Terryberry family of Ontario as been added. The children of Ontario settler George Terryberry and his third wife Mary Sweet have been sorted out, thanks to information contributed by Donna Fortman, who also provided information from several other marriage records pertaining to the Terryberrys. Descendants of and information about Charles Truman Terreberry and Mary Elizabeth Long have been added thanks to information provided by Jacky Coplen-Catterick. Wellington Terryberry of Cleveland, OH, formerly listed here as a son of William Miller Terryberry, is now known to be a son of one George Terryberry (of unknown parentage) and wife Elsie Ann. Another son of George and Elsie Ann is John Terryberry who left Ontario for Michigan about 1872; his son Lawrence Terryberry lived in Grand Rapids, MI.
May 31, 2005. A large amount of new information has been entered, including but not limited to the following: (1) corrections and descendants of Philipp Jacob DŸrrenberger (1752-1786) and Maria Magdalena Kick of Mertzwiller kindly submitted by Doug Beahm; (2) information from early marriage records of Wood Co., VA and Meigs Co., OH; (3) some information from the 1861 Canadian census, vital records of the Ontario Terryberry family, and wills of the settlers David and William Terryberry of Wentworth Co., ON; (4) complete information from the civil records of Griesbach, Alsace (1793-1850). Several discrete lineages have now been merged: (1) George W. Terryberry of Ontario and Chicago, as well as William Lewis Terryberry of Ontario and Vancouver, have both been shown to be sons of John S. Terryberry and Delilah Ferguson of Elgin Co., ON; (2) John S. Terryberry himself can be safely assumed to have been John Secord Terryberry, son of the settler David Terryberry; (3) Jacob Derenberger, founder of the Derenberger family of Baltimore, MD has now been shown to have been the son of Johann Paul DŸrrenberger, and born in Griesbach, Alsace.
Dec 20, 2004. Lots of new information on many American branches of the family, from disparate sources, has been added. Notable additions include descendants of John Young Terryberry of Grey Co., ON (courtesy of Doug Pattison), the Terryberry families of Vancouver, BC, and two immigrants from Ontario to the USA, Herbert Terryberry of Grand Rapids, MI and Edward M. Terryberry of PA, Washington, DC, and Atlanta. Corrections include moving Frederick Teribury of Potter Co., PA to the family of Alfred Teribery, properly distinguishing the several Albert Terryberrys of Ontario, and correcting the surname spellings of Frederick Terriberry of Hunterdon Co., NJ (formerly indexed as Derenberger) and his children.
Aug 19, 2004. Much new information about the Terryberry/Teribury family of the Schuyler Co., NY area has been added, courtesy of Ella Foster, including data from obituaries, vital records, and local newspaper articles. If you are interested in this family, please recheck the database since a number of significant corrections have been made. In addition, some minor additions and corrections to the Canadian Terryberry, New Jersey Terriberry, and Michigan Dernberger families have been made.
Jul 12, 2004. Many corrections to the Terryberry/Teribury family of the Schuyler Co., NY area, as well as to the Canadian Terryberry family and other branches, have been made. Children of Harvey Teribury have now been added or moved as appropriate. Thanks to Ella Foster, Penny Gerbracht, and Julie Schroyer for helpful info on the descendants of Minard Teribury.
May 21, 2004. A number of important corrections to the descendants of Samuel Terreberry (emigrant from New Jersey to Ontario) and Catherine Moore have been added, courtesy of Betty Harley, not least of which is the correction of the name spelling from Terryberry to Terreberry. In addition, complete information from the Mertzwiller Catholic church baptismal records has been added at long last. All DŸrrenbergers recorded in the Mertzwiller church records, both Lutheran and Catholic, prior to the establishment of the French Revolutionary Calendar in 1792, should now be included in the database.
Apr 16, 2004. A large amount of new information on the Canadian Terryberry families has been added, primarily from the 1851 and 1871 Canadian census records. Several other corrections and additions have been made to the American families.
Mar 1, 2004. Additional information has been added to the Durrenberger families of Erie Co., NY, mentioned below (including several putative brothers of Joseph Durrenberger [1816-1864] who went to Dubuque, IA), as well as minor corrections to other families. Four new major Durrenberger families in the 19th century U.S. have been added to the database: (1) The Derenberger family of Baltimore, MD, descended from Jacob Derenberger, probably originally of Griesbach, Alsace, who was a confectioner in Baltimore; (2) the Derrenberger family of Baltimore, MD, descended from David Derrenberger, also a confectioner, whose ties to Alsace are less clear; (3) the descendants of Peter G. Durrenberger of Silver City, NV, an Alsatian immigrant; and (4) the Durrenberger family of Bowling Green, KY, descendants of George Durrenberger of Alsace, who settled in Rochester, NY, and whose widow subsequently moved to KY with the children.
Feb 11, 2004. The two major Durrenberger families from Erie Co., NY have been added to the database. Both were settled by Alsatian immigrants: Jacob Durrenberger (b. 1808), whose descendants were active in the Buffalo fire department, and Joseph Durrenberger (b. ca 1816) who settled Cheektowaga, some of whose descendants eventually settled in Lee Co., Texas. Their connections to the Durrenbergers of Mertzwiller, Alsace have not yet been firmly established. Also, additions and corrections have been made to the Derrenberger family of Ohio, and to the descendants of George Hamilton Terryberry of Grimsby, Ontario.
Dec 4, 2003. Many minor additions and corrections have been made, too numerous to specify here. Most changes have been to the West Virginia Derenberger family, the Michigan Dernberger family, and the Canadian Terryberry family. In particular, the two Fred Dernbergers of Oakland Co., MI (known to descendants as 'Red Fred' and 'Black Fred'), formerly confused here, have been sorted out properly. Many thanks to several people who have written to me over the last few months with corrections and additions.
July 15. A large amount of new information on the Terryberry family of Ontario has been added based on information from the 1881 and 1901 Canadian censuses, US census records, and other sources. This family is descended from 7 sons of Philip Durrenberger (Terryberry) and Dorothea Swackhammer who migrated from Morris Co., NJ to the Niagara Peninsula of what is now Ontario between about 1805 and 1815: John, David, Christopher, William, George, Morris, and Samuel. Each of these sons has numerous descendants, making for a very large family which is often confusing to sort out. As with the Derenberger family of WV, the tree presented here often differs from published secondary sources, so any input is welcomed. Some additional information on this WV family, particularly descendants of John Durnberger in Iowa, Kansas, Missouri, and Montana has also been included with this update.
May 25, 2003. The Notes have been restored for each person. Information on the descendants of John Durnberger (formerly called Dunberger), who left Meigs Co., OH for IA and then settled in Iola (Allen Co.) and Toronto (Woodson Co.), Kansas, has been added. John is now considered a son of John Peter Derenberger by his first wife, Mary Stanford, and Benjamin Frank Dernberger is now known to be a son of Benjamin Dernberger and Sarah Alexander, so all of the West Virginia / Ohio family is now tied into a single tree.
May 16, 2003. Additional information on the West Virginia / Ohio family from the 1860 and 1920 census records and other sources has been added; several previously disconnected families have been connected. Descendants of this family through the Hetzer and Barringer lines has also been added (contributed by Barbara Sprik and Joyce Garrott, respectively). Finally, further additions and corrections to the Ohio Derrenberger family have been made.
Apr 27, 2003. Information on the Derenberger family of West Virginia and Ohio has finally been added. A large amount of information from the 1810-1910 census records as well as Jackson Co., WV marriage records, Ohio death records, and SSDI information was used to compile a new tree of this extensive family. They are descendants of Johann Peter DŸrrenberger of Gundershoffen (a.k.a. John Peter Derenberger, Sr.) who arrived in 1791 on the ship Diana, and settled in Wood Co., WV by way of Pennsylvania. Descendants of his two sons, George (by his first wife) and John Peter (by his second wife) are traced. An attempt was made to determine consistent surname spellings amidst the vagaries of census takers and county clerks, and this is still a work in progress. The spellings Derenberger, Derenburger, Dernberger, and Dunbargar have been consistently used into the 20th century. The tree presented here differs significantly from that in other websites, and any input from family members from this branch is welcomed. See the List of Durrenberger Families in the Database link above for other unconnected family members.
Mar 21, 2003. More information from the 1900, 1910 and 1920 US censuses has been added, particularly to fill out the Terriberry and Dernberger families (descendants of Stephan DŸrrenberger of Morris Co., NJ), and the Teribury and related families of New York state (descendants of Stephan's cousin Georg DŸrrenberger of Sussex Co., NJ). Additional miscellaneous American records pertaining to these families has also been incorporated. William J. Terriberry and Leonard F. Terryberry, whose ancestries were previously unknown, are now considered the son of Nathan Terriberry of Hunterdon Co., NJ and John Terryberry of Cass Co., NE, respectively.
Mar 2, 2003. A large amount of US census data has been incorporated into the database. In particular, the upstate New York Terryberry family (with surnames now properly spelled Teribury, Teribery, and Turybury) and Michigan Terreberry family has been completely updated with census data in many cases up to 1930, and many descendants have been added. The Hunterdon and Warren Co., New Jersey families have also been updated, with census data up to 1880. The surname of descendants of brothers Nathan, Philip C. and William of Hunterdon Co. has been corrected to Terriberry. In addition, some miscellaneous cemetery data has also been incorporated into these American families. Finally, records from 17th century Oberbronn, Alsace have been included (bringing a new family of unknown origin, namely Georg DŸrrenberger, into the database), as well as marriage and death records from Bretzwil to 1760.
Feb 3, 2003. Information from the 1860 US census of New York (specifically pertaining to the Terryberry family of Schuyler and Seneca Counties), the 1860 and 1870 census records from Morris Co., NJ, and scattered 1860 census records from Michigan, have been added.
Nov 30, 2002. Update to the
Swiss family: nearly all DŸrrenbergers from the records of the Bretzwil
Reformed Church up to 1750 are now found in the database. Other changes include
(1) some further information from the1880 US census, (2) corrections to the
McPherron family of Mills Co., IA (courtesy of Mary McPherron), and (3)
additional information about the son of John Terryberry of Newton, NJ and New
York state formerly called Christian and now called Christopher Terryberry
(courtesy of Marilyn Souders).
