Genealogy is the art of finding one's ancestors in spite of one's ancestors'
best efforts not to be found.

Texas Toast

My children and I are all Native Texans.  A few of our ancestors arrived here when it was still a Republic (18361846), and many more showed up before the first federal census (1850).  Others made it in time to see Texas leave the Union (1861) and then return a few bloody years later.  The rest, as the saying goes, got here as soon as they could.

American Pie

All of our known ancestors were colonists rather than immigrants, meaning they were in the New World before the American Revolution.  (At least, none of them claimed on the U.S. census to have been born anywhere else.)  Some of our ancestors have been traced as far north as New York, New Jersey, and Pennsylvania, but most established roots "in an early day" in Virginia, Georgia, and the Carolinas.

Surname Stew

Surnames are the stuff of which genealogies are made.  Some are the subjects of great interest and are well documented in various forms and media.  Others are relegated to a smattering of researchers with varying degrees of organizational skills.  Most of our surnames or, at least, our particular branches are clearly in the latter category.

Listed below are a few of the surnames, along with the states and counties in which our direct ancestors lived long enough to leave a record or two.  The locations are listed chronologically to help illustrate migration patterns.  Collateral lines (many of which are included on the linked pages) ventured into numerous other locations beyond those shown here.
