Funeral services will be at 3 p.m. Friday at First Baptist Church, Alabama City, for Katie Woods Bonner, Gadsden, who died Monday, March 29, 2010. Pastor John Woods will officiate. Burial will be in Lincoln Hill Memorial Park. Services entrusted to Gadsden Memorial Funeral Home.
She received her formal education in the St. Clair County School System before pursuing a two-year degree at Daniel Payne College, Birmingham, her bachelor's degree in education from Allen University and a master's degree from Fisk University.
Mrs. Bonner received Christ at a very young age and was a stalwart follower of the Baptist faith under her father, the Rev. Silas L. Woods. Upon marriage, she joined her husband, Edward Bonner, as he pursued the Gospel of the United Methodist Church. After his retirement in 1996, she reclaimed the Baptist church at First Baptist Missionary Church, Alabama City, where her brother, the Rev. John M. Woods, is the current pastor.
Mrs. Bonner began her professional career in teaching at Daniel Payne College in Birmingham from 1960 to 1969 and served as an English professor at Gadsden State Community College from 1969 until retirement in 1994. She was a member of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority Inc. and worked with a variety of social and community-based organizations in the area.
Katie Bonner leaves to honor and cherish her memories: a loving and dedicated husband of 53 years, the Rev. Edward D. Bonner; two daughters, Karen Bonner, Dallas, Texas, and Belinda (Tony) Reddick, Gadsden; two sons, Eluard (Sheryl) Bonner, Slidell, Louisianna, and Edward (Sheila) Barge, Dallas, Texas; two loving and devoted grandchildren, Lindsay Reddick, Birmingham, and Evan Reddick, Gadsden; two brothers, the Rev. John M. (Barbara) Woods and Larry (Ruby) Woods; two sisters, Willie Mae (the Rev. Henry) Haskins, Alexander City, and Earlene (Donald Ray) Turner, Ragland; a host of cousins, nieces, nephews; and two devoted caregivers.
