Transcription of a typed letter Mary wrote to her mother, found after her death. She refers to Herbert in the letter, which is dated in 1924. She and Herbert Kordes did not marry until 1930! Warrensburg, Mo., July 21, 1924. Dear Mother: It seems that I am always financially embarassed at or near July 22nd. And of course, this summer is no exception of the rule. But this is simply a little note to let you know that I remembered the date. I wish you a pleasant birthday and a happier year this year than last. George was down to visit me yesterday. Frances and I sure did enjoy his visit. There was no very decent entertainment but we got to visit. Frances said, “Mary, I feel almost like I had a visit home.” He got here Saturday night on the 11:50 and left on the 4:35 Sunday. It is real warm here to-day after raining most of the day yesterday. By the way, I almost forgot to tell you that I got a very nice box through the mail this A. M. It contains chocolates and hails from K. C. From the looks of things, I guess it must have come from Herbert. It was a great surprise for I had not expected any such thing from him. Well, mother, I must close as I have some other work to do. Hopeyou [sic] are well and happy. Tell Zurves that I still am exercising my patience and hope to be rewarded with a letter soon. Love to both of you, [signed] Mary Sympson |
