Family stories say that Fredrick and Friedrike came over together from Germany, but did not marry until they had been in the states a couple of years.  Friedrike had five cents in her pocket when she arrived.  Supposedly someone on the boat convinced them that CORDES would look more “American” if it was spelled KORDES.

From the transcribed passenger list, Fred Cordes, age 32, came from Prussia on the Ship Hermann, which left Bremen, Germany and arrived at the Port of New Orleans on 6 November 1854.  He and Francis Schneiker each had one package with them.  They are listed next to each other in the transcription.

He was a  Circuit Minister for the German Evangelical Church.  Occupation:  Farmer

He was married twice, with only one child from the first marriage surviving into adulthood.  On Jun 29, 1868 when he was 43, he married Anna Marie Katharine (Mary) (Maria Anna) STONER (STOENNER) (STOENDER), in Gasconade, Missouri.  She was born on Nov. 6, 1854 in Bay, Gasconade Co., Missouri and died on Dec 24, 1915, when she was 61.
