Obituary

Miss Eliza M. Peer was born in O. Jan. 30th, 1838.  In early life she removed with her parents to Pike Co., Ill., where she grew to woman-hood.  Jan. 28th, 1858 she was united in marriage in Hannibal Mo. to Jas. D. Gunn.  Until 1870, they resided in Ill. then moved to Buchanan Co, Mo., in the Mattox neighbor-hood about five miles north of Edgerton.  Sister Gunn was the mother of thirteen children, nine of whom are yet living J. W. Cora, Mary, Julia, Albert, Minnie, Lena Ruben H. and Curtis B.  In her girlhood she embraced Christ and became a member of the Methodist Episcopal church and in after years became affiliated with the Baptist church in which church she was a consistant patient servant of her Christ.  Through all her persecuations and afflictions, she never lost sight of her duty as a wife, a mother and a christian [sic].  To know her was to admire her.  During the last few months she made her home with her daughter, Mrs. Dr. Sympson of Edgerton.  Here she became sorely afflicted with what was supposed to be cancer of the stomach.  Her suffering was intense, yet she was very patient, and frequently mentioned Heaven and of her desire to depart and be with her Savior.  She died triumph [sic] in a living faith Aug. 21st, 1900, age 62 years, 7 months and  21 days.
The funeral service was conducted by the writer at the Baptist church, after which she was quietly laid to rest in the Mt. Zion cemetery, in the presence of a large company of relatives and friends.  "Blessed are the dead who die in the Lord from henceforth; that they may rest from their labors, and their works do follow them."     A. D. Davis
