(my great-grandfather)
George Washington Culp was born in 21 Mar 1827 Elmira, Chemung Co.,
New York. His first wife "Emy" died during the Civil War. I don't know
what happened to their sons. He enlisted at the age of 34 in Co D, 14th Iowa
Infantry on 28 Sep 1861. He was captured and taken prisoner about
1865 in Cahaba Alabama. On the morning of January 19, 1865 at about
3 o'clock am, a captain and several including George attempted to escape.
The escape failed and the captain was taken out of camp and shot.
During the scuffle, George received a saber wound in his right let between
the ankle and knee. The confederate major knew he wounded one of
the escapees and made everyone strip for a search. George's right
pant leg was severed at the hip, so he took it off last while moving slowly.
As he was buck naked except for the one pant leg, the major lost patience
and moved along before he exposed the wound. Thereby, he managed
to keep the wound a secret and saved his own life. While in the camp,
his eyes were damaged by the wood smoke and some of his medical exams determined
he was missing a piece of cornea on his right eye. He always wore
glasses after the civil war and could then see well enough to read and
to continue working as a blacksmith. Because of the saber wound,
he walked around with a cane or crutch the rest of his life. He was
soon paroled and was discharged 10 May 1865 returning to his home in Hillsboro,
Henry Co., Iowa. His wife had died during the civil war and he had
no family there, so he only stayed about five days and then moved to Primrose,
Lee Co., Iowa for about three years. After leaving Primrose, he went
to Missouri where he married Melissa Jane McKeehan also from Lee Co., Iowa
and daughter of Daniel and Julia McKeehan. Melissa was born 6 May
1844 in Lee Co., Iowa and died 27 Aug 1910. The were married 26 Nov
1865 in Clark Co., Missouri by Justice of the Peace Thomas.

What I know of his kids are as follows.....
----------------------------------------------------------------
Harriet Ida Culp was born 23 July 1866 in Schell City, Vernon Co., Missouri and died 8 Sep 1911. She married John Tomlinson about 1888. He was born Feb 1844 and died between 1900 and 1910. They had at least six kids together who are all most likely gone now.
1. Lee Tomlinson born May 1889 Kansas
2. Nora Tomlinson born May 1891 Kansas
3. Silkey Tomlinson (Daughter) born May 1893 Kansas
4. George Tomlinson b Mar 1896 Kansas, died Mar 1969 Tulsa
5. Devillow Tomlinson (son) born Jan 1899 in Indian Territory
6. Malissa Tomlinson born 1900 Oklahoma
----------------------------------------------------------------
Ella May "Nell" Culp was born 7 May 1868 and died 20 Jan 1961 probably in Missouri. She married Joseph Bradley 1884 in Kansas. Joseph was born 20 Feb 1862 in Missouri and died 9 Oct 1932 in Ellis Co., Oklahoma. They are both buried at the Eddie cemetery in Ellis County. Nell used to tell hair-raising stories about walking through town one day when the Dalton gang came riding down the street and shooting things up. She had her boy with her and stuck him in a cracker-barrell to keep him safe. The poor boy was screaming and thirsty - no doubt ate a few crackers too. I was told that the boy was Wallace, but he wasn't born until 1908 and the Dalton Gang's last ride was 1892. But since then, I've found out that she had older children born much earlier. Her folks were living just outside of Coffeyville, Kansas where the Dalton Gang's last ride was - so there might be more than just a grain of truth to the story. Joe is said to have been a deputy U.S. Marshall, but the censuses always listed him as a farmer. I don't yet know if he got deputized just once or if he spent some time at it as an occupation. Their son Wallace was a wild one in his younger days and liked the drink. My uncle told me once that he remembered Wallace coming by the house one time when he (my uncle) was a kid. Wallace was driving a pickup truck with the back covered by a tarp. Under the tarp was a layer of Bibles he was "selling". Under the Bibles were crates and crates of whiskey he was runnin'. Shortly after Wallace left, authorities showed up at the house, but alas, they missed him once again. Uncle remembers Wallace as a jovial sort of fellow that was always smiling.
Joseph Bradley and Ella May "Nellie M" Culp had the following children
who are all most likely gone now.
1. Zula Bradley born 5 Jan 1886 Kansas died 20 Sep 1916 married
George Harry Eddie
