| GGRANDFATHER2 | RUSSELL, James A (See Obituary)
Information from Aunt Inez: The "A" was not an initial ~ it did not stand
for a name. His parents may have been Robert and Sarah and may be Scotch-Irish.
Robert may have come from County Cork or County Down, Ireland. Both Jordan
and Russell surnames appear in County Down. There is a book about the Jordans.
James A was born in Kenton in Kent County Delaware OR in Kenton or Kent
in Delaware County in Pennsylvania. This information is from Lee Searles: A listing of soldiers in the 30th Wisconsin Infantry (all Companies) shows only one James Russell: Residence, Prescott, WI; enlisted 9 August 1862 Co., ‘F’ and was mustered out 30 September 1865. See Also: http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.com/~familyrosebush/russelltaylor.html 1870 census for Clifton, Pierce Co., Wisconsin shows James Russell, age (hard to read), born in Delaware, residing with or at work at time of census with a family named McDonald. Same census and place shows James Wilkinson age 49 born Delaware and wife Elizabeth age 47 born Delaware. The maiden name for Elizabeth is Taylor. The L.D.S show James Henry Wilkinson born 1851 Kent Co., Delaware. (This would make James A. Russell older than James Henry Wilkinson, if that is his uncle, but such age differences are not unheard of. - Barbara) 1880 Census, Clifton, Pierce Co. shows James (Henry) Wilkinson age 60 born Delaware, wife Elizabeth age 56 born Delaware with both their parents born in Delaware. 1880 Census, Clifton, Pierce Co., shows James RUSSEL with 1 "L" age 33 years (that puts him born 1847), born Delaware, occ. Farm laborer, Father born PA., Mother born MD, Wife: Evalyn Russel age 20 born WI., Father born Delaware and Mother born Ohio. (Many mistakes are made in the census reports. I can see how the census-taker might have heard Evangeline (1857) as Evalyn. - Barbara) SON: Lee Russel age 2 months born WI. (Robert Lee Russell, my grandfather, was born 4/11/1880, so that matches up with the census. - Barbara) I have information about Buckmasters and Wilkinsons in Kent and Newcastle Counties, Delaware, going back to the early-mid 1800s. There is, of course, a chance that these are the same lineages. The earliest I have is Lewis Buckmaster, married first to Anna Elizabeth ? in Delaware, with 4 children, all apparently born in DE. Remarried Mary Wilkinson, either in DE or Wisconsin; info conflicts. Sometime in the 1850s, Lewis moved to Pierce Cty., WI. Lewis apparently lived in Newcastle Cty. Risdan Wilkinson was born probably in the late 1700s in DE, married Sarah Morris (born 1796) in either MD or DE. There were five children, including Mary, who married Lewis Buckmaster, and James H., who moved to Pierce Cty., WI, and farmed there. |

| GGGRANDFATHER2 | TAYLOR, William J., stock owner and milk dealer, of Plainview, was
born October 26, 1823, in Vermont, but spent his youth on a farm four miles
south west of Versilles, N. Y., to which place his people removed while
William was a child. His parents were Bennona and Betsy Taylor. He was residing
at home December 31st, 1843, when he espoused Amanda Perkins, daughter of
Elijah and Patience Perkins, of the same county. In 1847, Mr. Taylor engaged
in farming in Erie county, Pa, and in 1854 removed to Marquette county,
Wisconsin, where he bought eighty acres of sandy land, which, in his characteristic
language, "A warrantee deed wouldn't hold." So in 1861 he abandoned it and
came to the beautiful prairie of Greenwood. He first rented a farm four
miles north of Plainview, but three years later he bought eighty acres from
A. B. W. Norton on section six, in Plainview, and about the same time came
to the village to reside. His landed possessions now consist of forty acres
in section seven and ten village lots. Hehas sold milk to the citizens of
Plainview more or less for twelve years past, and since 1881 has run a milk
wagon. Mr. And Mrs. Taylor have five children living, viz: Ellen J., (Mrs.
R. S. Tucker) of Marshall, Minn.; D. Z., a carpenter of Plainview; Olive
(Mrs. M. V. Palmer) of Defiance, Ohio, and Alice (Mrs. C. H. Ritter) and
Melvin F., farmer, of Plainview. (Information from the book "History of
Wabasha County" published 1884) 1880 residence in will was Pleasant Grove Olmstead Co MN, d. 6/02/1898 in Plainview MN, bur. Greenwood Cem. My grandfather's handwriting corrected the book's mistake that Olive was not listed and that Alice was listed as Mrs. M. V. Palmer) William and Amanda's children according to Aunt Inez: Franklin, David Zachary, Jane, Elsie who died young, Helen Alice who married a Ritter, Melvin Montgomery) |
