Transcription of Biddle-Hoover Farm Cem, Plum Creek
East Sharpsburg, Taylor Township, Blair County, PA

Alphabetical listing composed of data from Jana and Ramona's May 2001 visit AND the Liebegott transcription dated May 29, 1938. In 1938 the cem was on the Rhodes farm according to Liebegott. Ramona has this Cemetery on her restoration site if you would like to help. Any photos or notes others may have from their visits would be most welcome! New note: Ramona and I visited this cem again in May 2002, but I haven't yet got our gleanings reflected below.

I suspect the initial stones may be footstones. The Snowberger Cem about a quarter mile away has footstones about like these initial stones. All the initial stones were small.

The cemetery was in terrible shape. Could only see 1 or 2 stones when first got there. After poking around, rows began to show up. We got rained out and hadn't settled in for serious documentation before the rain. So if a date doesn't seem right, it probably isn't. Contact Jana or Ramona for more info.

May 2002, Jana: FHL US/CAN BOOK 974.871 H25s Vol 5 No. 3 St. Clair's Bedford by Southwest PA genealogical Services, Dec 1985. Early Land Applications, Bedford Co, PA. 14 Jun 1785 Christian Hoover applied for 50 acres including an improvement in Morrisons Cove, adjoining land of James Biddle and Conrad Brombaugh, situate in Frankstown Twp.

Jana is interested in knowing more about this Christian Hoover. In the 1790 Huntingdon Co, PA Federal Census there are several Hoovers: Christian, Jacob, Christian and Daniel. In the 1800 Woodberry Twp, Huntingdon Co, PA Census there are 2 Hoovers: Christian and Adam. From land records we know Christian Hoovers land was divided into 2 parts. His oldest son Jacob, in 1833, sold one part to a Dr. Shoenburger who in 1845 sold it to George Biddle. George Biddle buried his son Charles in the Snowberger Cem which is abt a quarter mile south from Biddle Cem, but of course we see the majority of George Biddle's family buried here in Biddle Cem. This suggests to Jana that the red brick home seeable on the north when standing in Biddle Cem is probably the Mansion Home refered to in George Biddle's will.

In 1792 a Jacob Smith buys 253 acres from Phillip Metzgar. Then in 1793 he sells part of it to Peter Hoover and Christian Hoover. Peter Hoover is recorded in the land deed as being of Beaver Creek Settlement, Washington Co, MD, carpenter. Christian Hoover is of Woodberry twp. In 1843 we find George Biddle buying 170 acres from Shoenbuger. This is part of piece of land Shoeburger bought when Christian Hoover died intestate and Christians land was divided into 2 parts: A and B. Shoenburger bought part A and then sold part of A to George Biddle. This same 1843 deed mentions that Christians oldest son is Jacob. And when you draw up the plat map you see Jacob Hoover's land bordering George Biddle's new land.

In Newspaper Abstracts of Frederick County 1816-1819 by F. Edward Wright, Vol 2, p. 148 we find - 29 May 1819. Frederick Town Herald. Chancery sale of real estate of Christian Hoover, dec'd,. 184 1/2 acres on Owen's creek, 1 1/2 miles from Graceham, Frederick Co.; also Graceham Mills; and other. Daniel Hoover, Trustee.

Chancery case: Daniel Hoover, John Hoover, Christian Hoover, Magdalena Hoover, David Hoover, Jacob Candle and Mary his wife, Martin Hoover, Peter Hoover, and Abraham Martin and Catherine his wife against David Kauffman, Mary Kauffman and Samuel Kauffman. Object of the bill is to obtain a decree for sale of real estate of Christian Hoover, dec'd. In the month of April 1809 Christain Hoover died intestate, seized of a large real estate in Frederick Co. He left the following children and grandchildren his heirs at law to wit, Daniel Hoover, Christian Hoover, John Hoover, Magdalena Hoover, DAvid Hoover, Mary who married Jacob Candle, Martin Hoover, Peter Hoover and Catharine who married Abraham Martin and all of whom are the complainants, also Nancy who married David Kauffman; that Nancy died before the death of her father the said Christian Hoover, leaving at the time of her death only tow chldren, the one named Mary the other Samuel, both of whom are infants living in the state of Pennsylvania with their father the said David Kauffman, and all of whom are the defendants in this case.

Christine Johns thinks this Samuel S. Hoover may be the son of Jacob and Sarah Hoover. Jacob being the brother of her David and Sarah the sister of her Mary Shultz. They had a son who was born 4-5-1818. She's fairly convinced that Samuel S belonged to Jacob and Sarah Shultz Hoover. Her Shultz book state that Jacob and Sarah were both buried in East Sharpsburg. However, she's continuing her research.

1840 Cen Woodberry Twp, Huntingdon County, PA. Jacob Hoover: 1 male under 5, 1 male 20 to under 30, 2 females 5 to under 10, 1 female 30 to under 40.

Marsden, Julian wife of William Marsden. Died Aug 16?, 1858? Aged 37 yrs 2 mo 3 days. Ramona has photo of this.

Marsden, Julian dau of William Marsden (this is probably a blooper--I don't remember there being 2 Julian Marsdens. But my notes of that day in May show a listing for a wife and a dau. Julia Biddle married William Marsden and had children. I have very little on this family and would like more.

According to Jana's notes, sometime after Julia Biddle-Marsden died, William must have moved to IL for that is where he supposedly died. Jana has a small amount on William and Julia's children.

Shiffler, William, son of Willliam and Susan Shiffler March 3 1857 aged 3 days. Ramona has a photo of this.

Jana knows of a Jacob m Shoneflet ag 24 enumerated with Peggy ag 18 in Huston Twp, Blair Co, Pa 1850 Census. And also of the Jacbo and Betsy Shonefelt family that preceeded them. But more info would be welcome.

Smith, John Smith d. Sept 20, 1883 80 yr 7 mo 16 d. Ramona has photo of this.

Smith, Mary A., wife of Andrew Smith, died Dec 16, 1859 aged 29-3-2 (Liebegott says names and dates difficult to read)

Oct 2002, Jana Stokes. Marinsburg Library Liebegott Collections Smith Volumes: from the information their I believe Mary A. is Mary Annie Myers-Smith, possibly a sister to John Myers. From census and St. John's Reformed Church (Umbower/East Sharpsburg) cem records I have 4 children to her credit: George M. Smith (1850-1934), Catherine Smith (1853-1895) who mar Thaddeus Biddle, Albert Smith (1855-1938), and Hannah (abt 1858-?). This is slightly different from the Liebegott collection that listed 3 children. Her husband Andrew, remarried and had many more children. I did not get a chance to completely go through all the Smith volumes of the Liebegott collection, so perhaps there is more information there.
