Pat Demas Jr.

Pat Demas, Jr., 79, of Savannah, died Saturday, July 20, at Candler Hospital. He was born in Pennsylvania and had lived in Savannah for many years. Mr. Demas was a veteran of World War II, having served in the U. S. Army-Air Corps. He was a member of the American Legion Post #184 and the Mighty Eighth Air Force Heritage Museum. He was a Communicant of Blessed Sacrament Catholic Church and retired from the American General Life & Accident Insurance Company.
Survivors: wife of 48 years, Amy Boyette Demas of Savannah; brothers-in-law, Fred F. and Mary Lou Boyette of Bloomingdale, James H. and Virginia Boyette of Collins; sister-in-law, Irene B. Lynn of Savannah; and several nieces and nephews.
Visitation: 6:00-8:00 p. m., Monday, at the Hubert C. Baker Funeral Home. Christian Wake Service: 7:00 p. m., Monday, in the Chapel of the Hubert C. Baker Funeral Home. Delmas Durden

Mr. Delmas Durden, 76, died Monday, March 24, 2003, at Glenvue Nursing Home in Glennville. The Tattnall County native had lived in Glennville for the past twenty years. He was a retired Captain of Georgia State Prison and attended Oak Grove Baptist Church in Glennville.
He is survived by his wife, Retta Durden of Glennville; son, Taron Durden of Milledgeville; daughter, Delaree Fine of Pittsburgh, PA; step-son, Terry Chastin of Salem, IN; brother, F. M. “Sonny” Durden of Lyons; three sisters, Virginia O’Neal of Glennville, Sarah Kelly and Peggy Jones both of Belles Glade, FL; four grandchildren, Zachery Durden, Austin Durden, Jennifer Fine, and Katie Fine; four step-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.
Funeral services will be held Thursday, March 27, 2003, at 2:00 p.m. in the Chapel of Bradley B. Anderson Funeral Home. Interment will follow in Marvin United Methodist Church Cemetery.
Bradley B. Anderson Funeral Home is in charge of the arrangements.

Thelma C. Durden

ROME,(GA) -
Mrs. Thelma Cowart Durden, 85, died Feb. 28 (2001).
She was a native of Emanuel County and lived in Lafayette for more than 40 years and for several years in Twin City. She was a member of First Baptist Church in Twin City and the
widow of Brautus Perry Durden.
While in Lafayette, she was a member of First Baptist Church there, taught pre-school Sunday school more than 20 years, was president of the Women's Missionary Union, sang in the church choir and served in various other capacities. In Twin City, at First Baptist Church, she continued her work in the choir and WMU. She was a member of the Garfield Homemakers Club. She and her husband owned and operated the Durden Bakery in Lafayette.
SURVIVORS: two daughters, Mabry Jean D. King of Chattanooga, Tenn., and Melanie Ann D. Bynum of Charlotte, N.C.; a son, Hugh Brautus Durden of Rome; nine grandchildren, 14 great-grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.
VISITATION: 6-8 p.m. today at Hendley, Rountree and Powell Funeral Home in Swainsboro.
FUNERAL: 2 p.m. Saturday at First Baptist Church in Twin City, burial in Hebron Primitive Baptist Church Cemetery.

Notes:Thelma Cowart was the daughter of James Sidney Cowart and Susan Johnson. She was born on 10 Apr 1915.

Dean Flanders

Dean Flanders, 90, died Sunday, April 13, 2003 at the Johnson County Nursing Home after a brief illness. Mr. Flanders was a native of Emanuel County and a retired brick mason and farmer. He had been a member of Sardis Primitive Baptist Church since May 18, 1958, a deacon for 30 years, and for many years served on the cemetery committee and as Treasurer. He was a son of the late Jordan Arthur and Georgia McGee Flanders.
Survivors include his wife Alvaona "Dollie" F. Flanders of Adrian; son and daughter-in- law, Henry and Deidre Flanders of Adrian; granddaughter and grandson-in-law, Dana F. and Scott Laster of Atlanta; two great-grandsons, Luke and Jacob Dean Laster of Atlanta; three sisters, Etoile Hutcheson of Davisboro, Udell Watkins of Macon, Pauline Lewis of Placentia; and brother, J. E. Flanders of Kite.
Visitation: 6:00-8:00 p.m., Monday at Peebles-Curry-Durden Mortuary. Funeral Services: 11:00 a.m., Tuesday, April 15 in the Sardis Primitive Baptist Church, near Kite, with Elder Reid Davis and Elder Woodrow Beasley officiating. The body will lie in state at the church one hour prior to the service. Burial to follow in the church cemetery. Maggie Peebles Garrett, 87

SWAINSBORO--Funeral for Maggie Peebles Garrett, 87, will be held Thursday, March 27, 2003, at 11 a.m. at Blundale Baptist Church with the Rev. Jamie Archer and the Rev. Wilmer Hall officiating. Burial will be at Forest Lawn Cemetery. She died Tuesday, March 25, 2003.
A native of Emanuel County, Mrs. Garrett was the
daughter of the late Richard and Elizabeth Woods Peebles and wife of the late Homer A. Garrett. She was a homemaker and member of Blundale Baptist Church where she served as pianist for 50 years. She was also former director with Emanuel County Farm Bureau, Blundale Chapter.
Survivors include one son, Donnie Aden Garrett of Swainsboro; three sisters, Alma Anderson, Margie Womack and Sallie Mae Riner, all of Swainsboro and three grandchildren.
Pallbearers are Richard Garrett, Jim Curry, Buford Price, Aubrey J. Womack, Travis Garrett, Tim Garrett, Bob Price, Bill Price, Joe Peebles, Tim Peebles, Craig Peebles, Ronnie Mallette, Johnny Price Randy Price, Jimmy May and Jason May.

(Ben) Robert Gay, 75, died on Monday (Sept 24) at the Jenkins County Hospital.
Born in Jenkins County, he was a retired business owner and a member of the Elam Baptist Church where he was a member of the Men's Bible Class. He was a member of Ridgeway Lodge #104 F&AM of Garfield.
Survivors include his wife, Christine Hendrix Gay of Garfield; three sons and two daughters-in-law, Ben and Debbie Gay and Harry and Christine Gay, all of Garfield, and Steve Gay of Florida; one daughter and son-in-law, Latrelle and Burt Rocker of Garfield; one brother, Randall L. Gay of Garfield; two sisters, Leta Gay Smith of Millen and Lottie Potts of Smyrna; and 12 grandchildren.
The family will receive friends on Tuesday from 7-9 p.m. at the Crowe-Fields Funeral Home in Millen.
The funeral will be held on Wednesday at 11 a.m. at the Elam Baptist Church in Millen with Dr. John Parker and the Rev. Bill Brown officiating. Burial will be in the Elam Cemetery in Millen.
Active pallbearers will be Ricky Clifton, Tony Gay, Larry Saunders, Bill Mathews, Ronnie Gazaway, Ivan Merrier, Jody Godwin and Benjy Gay.
Honorary pallbearers will be members of the Men's Bible Class.

Mr. Charlie Horace ``Rag'' Gay Jr., 81, of Elam Road, died
Monday, Feb. 5, 2001, at Jenkins County Hospital, Millen.
The funeral will be at 3 p.m. today at Crowe-Fields Funeral Home, Millen, with Tommy Roundtree officiating. Burial will be in Hebron Cemetery.
Mr. Gay, a native of Jenkins County, was an Army veteran of World War II and had retired as a farmer. He was Baptist.
Survivors include his wife, Mella Dickey Gay; a son, Charlie Horace Gay III, Millen; a brother, Deal Gay, Garfield; and two grandchildren.
Pallbearers will be Kenny Dickey, George Robert Dickey, Raymond Dickey,
Arnold Deal Gay, Donnie Gay and Rayburn Johnson.

Dobson M. (Moran) Gay Sr.

GARFIELD,Ga. -- Dobson M. Gay Sr., 91, died July 9,1999 at Jenkins County Hospital in Millen.
He was born in Jenkins County and was a farmer in Jenkins and Emanuel counties for more than 60 years. He received the Lifetime Achievement Award from Jenkins County Livestock Association for service to the agriculture industry of Jenkins County. He was recognized by Jenkins County Chamber of Commerce for his years of service to the forestry industry in Jenkins County. He was a deacon of Elam Baptist Church, a Mason, past president and director of Ogeechee Valley Bank, past director of both the Jenkins County Hospital Authority and Dixie Production Credit Association. He was a past member of both the Jenkins County Board of Education and American Turpentine Farmers Association.
SURVIVORS: a son, Dobson M. Gay Jr. of Garfield; a daughter, Cynthia G. Snider of Wichita, Kan.; a stepdaughter, Betty Thompson of Swainsboro; a stepson, Jerry Lawson of Swainsboro; four sisters, Lewellyn G. Rabenau of St. Marks, Fla., Rubye G. Hammond of Sylacauga, Ala., Dorabelle G. Morgan and Anne G. Booker, both of Savannah; eight grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren.

Emory Speer Gay Jr., 76, died on Sunday (Sept 30, 2001) at the Jenkins County Hospital. The Jenkins County native was a dairy farmer and a veteran of the U.S. Navy. He was deacon and former treasurer of the Elam Baptist Church, a member of the Farm Bureau, the American Dairy Association and Georgia Milk Producers. He was a former member of the Jenkins County Board of Education.
Survivors include his wife, Fay Turner Gay of Millen; one son, Emory Speer "Sonny" Gay III of Athens; three daughters, Debbie G. Parker and Becky G. Bell of Millen and Shelly G. Magruder of Athens; two sisters, Wudie G. Anderson of Ponte Vedra, Fla., and Annette G. Spear of Forsyth; six grandchildren and one great-grandchild.
The family will receive friends on Monday from 7-9 p.m. at the Crowe-Fields Funeral Home in Millen.

She died Sunday, Dec. 1, 2002, at Memorial Medical Center of Savannah.
Mrs. Gay was born in Jenkins County and was a retired quality control inspector for Thompson Company. She was a Baptist.
Her husband, Charlie H. Gay preceded her in death.
Survivors include one son, Charlie H. Gay III of Millen; one sister, Mary Hazel Sharp of Eden; two brothers, John Edward Dickey Jr. of Garden City and Jimmy E. Dickey of Pembroke; three grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.
Pallbearers were Kenny Dickey, George Robert Dickey, Raymond Dickey, Arnold Deal Gay, Donnie Gay and Ricky Dickey.

Mr. Robert S. Gay, 65, of 222 S. Railroad Ave., died Saturday, April 4, 1998, at University Hospital, Augusta.
The funeral will be at 11 a.m. today at Hebron Primitive Baptist Church with Tommy Rountree, William Claxton and Manning Temples officiating.
Burial will be in the church cemetery. Mr. Gay, a native of Emanuel County, had retired from the U.S. Department of Agriculture as a meat inspector. He served in the Air Force from 1950 to 1973, retiring as senior master sergeant. He was a member and deacon of Hebron Primitive Baptist Church.
Survivors include his wife, Ida Mae Gay; a son, Keith E. Gay, Oahu, Hawaii; two daughters, Donna Joe Campbell and Debra A. Ellison, both of Garfield; two sisters, Sara Richardson, Twin City, and Margaret Bobo, Wrens; and eight grandchildren.

She was a native of Bulloch County and a life long resident of the Stilson community. She was a member of Olive Branch Baptist Church. She was a 1921 graduate of First District State Agricultural School and a homemaker.
SURVIVORS: a son, Montrose Graham of Statesboro; two grandchildren, Lucia Brown of Marietta and Monty Graham of Savannah; and four great-grandchildren.

STATESBORO, Ga. - Mr. Bernard Hendrix, 76, died Thursday, April 20, 2000, at his residence.
The funeral will be at 2 p.m. Saturday at Joiner-Anderson Funeral Home with W.I. Tidwell officiating. Burial will be in Hendrix Cemetery.
Mr. Hendrix, a lifelong resident of Bulloch County, had retired as a farmer and attended Nevils Creek Primitive Baptist Church.
Survivors include a son, Tommy Hendrix, Statesboro; and three grandchildren and a great-grandchild. Pallbearers will be Ray Hendrix, Brantley Chester, Lee Luckett, Preston Hendrix, Buster Hendrix and Robert Hendrix.

Leila Roy Flanders Henry, 89, was held Tuesday, June 25, 2002 at 11 a.m. from Peebles-Curry-Durden Mortuary Chapel. The Rev. Ira Whitaker and the Rev. Wayne Page officiated. Burial was in Swainsboro City Cemetery.
She died Sunday, June 23 (2002), at Emanuel Medical Center following an extended illness.
Mrs. Henry was a native of Emanuel County, was retired with Swainsboro Sportswear and was a member of Hebron Baptist Church and attended the Church of God. She was
wife of the late Ridge Waye Henry.
Survivors include five daughters, Lavonia Roby of Macon, Geneva Rich, Jewell Johnson and Francis Chance, all of Swainsboro, and Lauracenie Amos of Anderson, Missouri; two sons, Ridgewaye Henry of Smiths, Ala. and Jim Henry of Swainsboro; 17 grandchildren; 25 great-grandchildren; and five great-great-grandchildren.
Pallbearers were Hoke Rich III, Marvin Henry, Mitchell Henry, Bill Johnson, Brian Thomas, Billy Chockley and Alvin Henry.

Hubert J. Higgs, 77, died March 5 (2000) at home. He was a native of Toombs County, a retired iron worker and was of the Baptist faith. He was an Army veteran of World War II and a member of Inman Creek Masonic Lodge No. 491. He was the widower of Hazel Higgs.

SURVIVORS: three sisters, Sally Kate Gibbs of Brunswick and Juanita Sikes and Versie Cribbs, both of Claxton; two brothers, Roger Sapp of Townsend and Hollis Sapp of Hinesville; two granddaughters, Debbie Bridewell of Savannah and Billy Bruce Wilt of Charlotte, N.C.; a daughter-in-law, Athline Hodges of Hinesville; and three great-grandchildren.

Kathleen O. Holland, 75, died Aug. 7, 1999 at Memorial Health University Medical Center. She was a native of Tattnall County and a longtime resident of Savannah. She retired from Baker & Jarrell Lighting after 20 1/2 years of service. She was a member of Morningside Baptist Church.
SURVIVORS: her husband, Clifton B. Holland of Savannah; a son and daughter-in-law, Wayne C. and Zellie Holland of Savannah; two daughters and sons-in-law, Kathy H. and Richard Brigdon of Savannah and Rhonda H. and David Burke of Orange Park, Fla.; two brothers, Archie C. Odom of Pooler and James E. Odom of Guyton; six grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.
VISITATION: 6-8 p.m. today at Fox & Weeks Funeral Directors, Drayton Chapel.
FUNERAL: 1 p.m. Tuesday at Morningside Baptist Church, burial in Hillcrest Abbey Memorial Park.

Mrs. Clauselle Howard

SYLVANIA, Ga. - Mrs. Clauselle Griner Howard, 80, died Saturday, April 29, 2000, at her residence.The funeral will be at 11 a.m. Tuesday at Sylvania First United Methodist Church with the Revs. B. Sonny Mason and Charles W. Jones Sr. officiating. Burial will be in Screven County Memorial Cemetery.
Mrs. Howard, a native of Screven County, had retired as owner and operator of Double H Grocery. She was a member of Sylvania First United Methodist Church, where she was a member of Chance Hill Circle.
Survivors include two sons, Samuel M. Howard III, Oliver, and William G. Howard, Newington; a brother, George B. Griner, Marietta; two sisters, Marian G. Sanderson, Lafayette, La., and Frances Griner, Orlando, Fla.; and four grandchildren.
Pallbearers will be Michael Howard, Lewis Shakleford, Ed K. Overstreet, Bert Shakleford, George Griner and Bob Overstreet.

The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 p.m. today at Thompson-Strickland-Waters Funeral Home.

Mrs. Adell Hooks    (MILLEN, Ga.)

MILLEN, Ga. - Mrs. Adell Clifton Hooks, 97, of Millen, died Thursday, February 7, 2002. Funeral Services will be announced later. She was born in Toombs County, a homemaker and member of Elam Baptist Church, Ein Taylor Sunday School Class, Women’s Missionary Union and United Daughters of the Confederacy.
Survivors include her daughter, Venice C. Bishop of Twin City; and a son, H. T. Clifton, Jr. of Millen.
Visitation will be Friday, February 8 from 7 until 9 p.m. at Crowe-Fields funeral home of Millen.

Notes: Adell Phillips was the wife of 1st Harrison Toles Clifton, Sr. - 2nd Unknown Hooks. She was born on 1 Jan 1905. She was the daughter of William W. Phillips and Lucille Elizabeth Aaron.
