Charles E. BATSON Jr., 72, of Parkville, formerly of Parnell, died May 14 at his home. He was born in Parnell and had lived in Kansas City, KS, before moving to Parkville 20 years ago. He was custodian in the Park hill School District for seven years and retired in 1979. He was an army veteran of WW II and a member of the disabled American Veterans.

Survivors include his wife, Mrs. Susie J. BATSON; two sons, Charles E. BATSON III of the home and Carl E. BATSON of Silverton, OR., a brother Roy J. BATSON of Kansas City, KS; five sisters, Crystal HERNDON and Mrs. Nora MEEK of Parnell and Mrs. Vern PALMER, Mrs. Inez STANLEY and Mrs. Dora ASHLEY of Kansas City, KS.; and two grandchildren.

BATSON, James Riley - - died 13 July 1898, east of Parnell, Missouri, the son of William & Catherine BATSON.  Aged 37 years.  He was born in Marshall Co., Iowa 31 Aug 1860.  The BATSON’s came to Missouri in 1867.  His house is about 4 miles east of Grant City, but was in Parnell, Missouri with his parents during his illness.  He was unmarried.  Burial at The Parnell Cemetery.

Double Funeral Tuesday Afternoon

Youth and Old Age Lay Down Life's Burden and are Laid to Rest in Oak Grove Cemetery.

Maryville M.E. Church was the scene of a very sad and most unusual ceremony Tuesday afternoon when burial services were conducted for Mrs. Mary HARVEY, Grayville's oldest lady and her grand niece Miss Winfred WOODE*.

Rev. W.D. RICHARDSON presided and after reading obituaries of the two deceased women preached a touching and appropriate sermon. Music was provided by the King's Daughters and assisted by Messer's. Wm. ROBINSON, W.L. WILLIAMS, Mesdames C.S. FIELD and Jennie HAEFELE and Miss Delia EIEBE*. The church was filled with relatives and friends who came to pay their last respects to the departed ones. Internment was at Oak Grove Cemetery.

Mrs. Mary HARVEY

Mrs. Mary HARVEY was the oldest lady in Grayville and probably the oldest in White County coming here the earliest days of this settlement. She was not only the oldest but also one of the most widely known and highly respected ladies of the community, her pleasant personality and beautiful character winning her friends by the score. She was respected by all who knew her and will be greatly missed.

Mary BATSON was born in Wayne County, IL March 22, 1823. She was united in marriage to Felix w. HARVEY, August 24th, 1841 and to this union six children were born, two sons and four daughters, two of whom survive her - Mrs. Armenta HASKETT near Albion and Felix W. HARVEY of New Harmony, IN. Her husband preceded her in death March 5th, 1857.

Aunt Mary HARVEY as she was commonly called, united with the Methodist Church early in life and has lived a faithful and consistent Christian until death. Her long life of Christian service is a standing testimonial of the Christian religion. She was one of the charter members of the Grayville Methodist church and was faithful in attendance as long as her health would permit. She was adopted by the "Junior League" as the "Grandmother of the League". She was called from earth to rest April 8th, 1918 at the advanced age of 95 years and 16 days.

She leaves to mourn her departure the two surviving children, two sisters, Mrs. Clarissa PATTERSON and Miss Jane BATSON of Grayville, a number of grandchildren and great grandchildren and other relatives. Surely it can be said of her life-"She hath fought a good fight and she hath kept the faith she hath finished **.

Roy J. BATSON, 81, of Kansas City, KS, died Tuesday, April 11, 1989 at Providence-St. Margaret Health Center. Mr. BATSON was born near Phillip S.D., August 30, 1907.

He spent his early childhood in Worth county and graduated from Parnell High School in 1927. He was married to Cecile COLLINS of Parnell in 1940. She preceded him in death.

Others preceding him in death were his parents, Charles and Mary (McDOWELL) BATSON; and a brother Charles Jr.

Mr. BATSON has lived in the Kansas City, KS area for more than 50 years. He was a millwright for Columbian Steel for more than 40 years before retiring in 1969.

Surviving are five sisters, Vern PALMER, Dora ASHLEY, Idrez STANLEY, Kansas City, KS, Nora MEEK and Crystal HERNDON, Parnell, MO.

 MARYVILLE, MO. -- Crystal Catherine (Boston) Herndon, 96, Maryville, died Saturday August 4, 2001, at a Maryville health-care center. Mrs. Herndon, a homemaker, was a member of the United Methodist Church, American Legion Auxiliary, North End Coffee Club, 60 Plus Club, Cheerie Workers Club, and the Worth County Extension Club, all of Parnell, MO. Mrs. Herndon was preceded in death by her husband, James E.  Herndon, in 1977. She also was preceded in death by daughter, LuVon Rangitsch; her parents Charles E. and Mary E. Batson; two brothers, Roy J.  and Charles Batson; two sisters Vern Palmer and Dora Ashley. Surviving:  three sons, Paul, Maryville, Dean, St. Joseph, and Donald, Kansas City, MO.; a daughter, Janice Garrett, St. Joseph; two sisters, Nora Meek and Idrez Stanley, both of Waukee, Iowa; 13 grandchildren; and several great-grandchildren.  Service:  1:30 p.m. Wednesday, Prugh-Dunfee Funeral Home, Grant City, Mo. Burial: Rose Hill Cemetery, Parnell, Mo. Family visitation: noon today at the funeral home.

Benjamin Batson died at McClary's bluff Monday Morning. Mr. Benjamin Batson, a wealthy, well known and respected citizen of Coffee precinct, died at the residence of his son Mr. Charles Batson at McClary's bluff at one 'o clock Monday morning. The funeral took place Tuesday, services being held at the residence and the body then being taken to Grayville, the old home of the deceased for burial. Mr. Batson's age was about 76 years. He had been a resident of Coffee precinct for upwards of twenty years coming there from Grayville. He was a native of Illinois and the greater portion of his life was passed in White County. He was a successful farmer and had acquired a competence, which enabled him to pass his declining years in ease. Mr. Batson was a widower at the time of his death. The children, who survive him and all of who has attained their majority, are dr. Ben Batson, Nr. Charles Batson, Mrs. Albert Elliott, Mr. William Batson, Mrs. Joseph Shepard and Mrs. E.B. Keen Jr. Mr. Batson was a good citizen and his death is a loss to the whole community.

Walter Shafer Batson age 80 of Shelbyville, Illinois, died Friday December 7, 1979 in the Shelby county Memorial hospital, following a short illness. A native of Wabash county, he was born at McCleary's bluff near Keensburg on December 24, 1898, the son of Charles M. and Nannie Schafer Batson, who preceded him in death. Mr. Batson was united in marriage to Grace E. Morsch in Hinckley, Illinois on July 21, 1926. Surviving are his wife, a brother, Benjamin a. Batson, Knoxville, Tennessee, a sister Lucille Batson, Mt. Carmel, one niece, two nephews, and one great niece. Mr. Batson was educated in the Wabash county schools and at the University of Illinois, College of Agriculture. After teaching vocational agriculture in the high schools at Milledgeville and Ridge Farm for seven years, he served as county Farm ad-***Copy ends***

A memorial service will be held at the First Christian Church on Sat. May 31, at 2 p.m. for Miss Lucille Batson, 119 Evergreen Lane, Mt. Carmel, who died on May 2, 1980 at Barnes hospital, St. Louis, during heart surgery. Miss Batson had entered the hospital on April 13 following several months of declining health due to a serious but unexpected heart condition. Miss Batson was born Sept.. 2, 1902 at McCleary's Bluff, Wabash County, the daughter of Charles M. and Nannie Schafer Batson. In 1908 the family moved to the country home near Keensburg. After graduating from Mt. Carmel high School in 1919 she received her B.A. degree from Oxford college for Women (now Miami (Ohio) University). ***Copy ends***
