SUMMARY OF GROUP-1

This group is a good example of the evolving status of possible relationships between participants who match 12/12 and 11/12 in their initial DNA testing.  Kits # 754  and #748 were among the first group of DNA participants when only the 12 marker test was available.  Since they matched 11/12 they were in touch with each other and attempted to find  ancestors in common.  Lannie #748 worked with Carol #754 to find information for Alfred Walker, Carol's grandfather.  Her father had been adopted and the only thing known about the grandfather was his name.  Thomas Walker #4418 had posted  an obituary of his ancestor, Alfred Walker,  online,  which Lannie found.   He suggested that Thomas join the DNA project.  When Thomas' #4418 results came back, he was a perfect match with Carol, and after exchanging information and finding a marriage certificate, they discovered that they both descend from Alfred Walker by two different wives.  When the expanded markers were added to the equation, Carol and Thomas are a 25/25 match with each other.  Lannie and Carol are now a 21/25 match, indicating that their common ancestor is further removed than was indicated with the 11/12 match in the first DNA test.

The two additional participants, Kits #3138 and #4341,  are a 12/12 match with each other, and an 11/12 match with Lannie, #748.    #4341 and #748 have extended markers and match 24/25.   We do not know how these three participants are related to each other.  Results for new Kit 5947 have just been returned (01/15/03) and match 25/25 with 4341. 

We may have two separate Walker families in Group 1, who share a common ancestor in the more distant past.    Perhaps additional DNA testing of related Walkers will reveal more about the distance to the common ancestor.
