A Little History
The Citizen Band Potawatomi Tribe of Oklahoma is so-called
because certain Prairie Band members applied for citizenship papers in the 1860’s,
having been granted this right by treaty.
Many sold their fee patent land in Kansas; and, landless and destitute,
they were removed to Indian Territory.
Reservation land was provided for them there; however, since they were
citizens, legal questions arose as to their right to live on it. Today, there is no Potawatomi reservation in
Oklahoma, but the band owns 1.25 acres of land; individual band members own land,
also. |
