A Little History
The Kickapoo moved
into the Wisconsin area in the early part of the 17th Century. They later moved into Illinois, near the
present day city of Peoria. During the
War of 1812, they were allies of Tecumseh, a Shawnee chief against the United
States. In 1809 and 1819, the Kickapoo
ceded their lands in Illinois to the United States and moved to Missouri and
the Kansas. About 1852, a large part of
Kickapoo, along with some Potawatomi, went to Texas and then to Mexico, where
they became known as “Mexican Kickapoo.” In 1863, another dissatisfied band
joined them. Ten years later, part tof
this band was induced to return to Indian Territory. Those who chose to remain in Mexico were granted a reservation on
the Sabinas River abiut 12 to 15 miles from the town of Musquiz, State if
Coahuila. |
