A Little History
The Delaware are members of the Algonquian linguistic family. They were once one of the larger tribes of the Eastern Woodland people. Gradually they moved west and were located in at least 10 different states during migration. At present, two groups of Delaware live in Oklahoma. The main part of the tribe, known as “Registered Delaware,” came from their reservation in Kansas in 1867 and settled with the Cherokee and were allotted land with them. Their descendants live in Washington, Craig, Nowata, and Delaware Counties. The other group, still a distinct Delaware Tribe, was associated with the Caddo and Wichita Tribes in Texas and came to the Washita River in Indian Territory in 1859. A number of Delaware moved and associated with other tribes in the north and northwestern country. Approximately 750 Delaware re called Absentee Delaware. |
