[HI44197] (Research):John MINNICH, deceased; was a son of Michael, Sr., and Eve (Sintz) Minnic h, who were both born, raised and married in Lancaster Co., Penn. They a nd five children emigrated to Ohio early in the 19th century, where two mo re children were born to them. He entered 300 acres of land in what is n ow Bethel Township, Clark Co., which is still in possession of the descend ants. Michael and family were among the early and worthy pioneers of Cla rk Co., to whom much is due for the opening out of fine fields in Bethel T ownship, where in 1881, instead of being decorated with the deep and den se forest, they are ornamented with waving fields of golden grain. Micha el died in 1847, and his wife in 1856. Of their seven children (who are n ow all dead), John, the subject of this memoir, the sixth in number, was b orn in the present limits of Bethel Township, April 28, 1810, and was rais ed through the early part of the same. He nobly assisted his father unt il a matured age, in the meantime procuring a common education. Upon Sep t. 10, 1832, he married Susan Layton, by whom he had four children. Sus an was born in Clark Co. in 1812, and died in 1840, leaving husband and o ne child. The former married September, 1842, for his second wife Caroli ne Layton, a sister of his first wife; she was born in Bethel Township, Cl ark Co., in December, 1824. By this union five children were born, of wh om four are now living, whose names respectively are D. C., who married Fe b-ruary, 1866, Elizabeth V. Higgins; Felix G., who died in 1868, aged 23 y ears; Cassius W., married in 1872 Ida Higgins; Mary E. married in 1872 Nor man Latta; and Jessie E. Michael, who was the surviving one at Susan's dea th. He, married in 1865 Sinda A. McAllister. John Minnich soon after his f irst mar-riage settled on his father's farm, where he resided until his de ath, April 11, 1864. He through life was an active and energetic farme r, in which he suc-ceeded. He was always willing to lend a helping ha nd to all public improvements; took an active part in the erection of t he Dayton and Mad River Valley Turnpike, of which he served as Superintend ent from its erection to his death. Polit-ically he was a Republican; thou gh an earnest worker in its behalf, he never aspired to any office whateve r. He took a liberal part in aiding the suppression of the late rebellio n, with which he was connected until his death. He was a man of much respe ctability, leaving a widow and five children above mentioned, the former s till bearing the name of her departed husband.

Sylvanus was a Minister of German Baptist Church. He later moved to Kansas then to RapidCity,SD where he is buried. I am wi th in walking distance of the cemetery where the family is buried.
Sylvanus born 13 Feb. 1825 Champaign, Ohio He was a Minister of German Baptist Church married Jemima Rhodes 9 March Churubusco, Ind ten children born to this couple nine at Churubusco, Ind the tenth at Norw ay, Kansas. the family moved to Kansas in abt 1874.
Jemima was the daughter of Daniel Rhodes born 1805 Jan 16.died at Concordi a, Kansas 189?
On the 1880 U S Census census place Eel River, Allen, Indiana Source FHL Film 1254264 National Archives Film T9-0264 page 170A Daniel Rhodes father age 75 Rosanna wife age 45 then comes Jemima (Mrs Sylvance Merica) daughter age 45 Selvanice Merica son M age 10 Jeramiee Merica son m age 8 Jemima Merica daughter F age 6
this shows Jemima and three of her children the three youngest was with h er back with her folks. there are times we have lost Sylvance in the census not able to account f or him in any place. Sylvance and Jemima moved to Rapid City,SD Nov.1901 he died in Rapid Cit y, 24 Jan 1903. Some of their children was here in Rapid City or moved soon as sever al of them are buried at the same cemetery as Sylvance. Jemima remarried after his death not until 29 April 1914 here is Rapid Cit y. She is buried at the same cemetery as him but not together nor is the s econd husband buried with her he is out in a country cemetery.
In some of the info there is a name of Zach which would appear to possib ly be a brother to Sylvanus. I have had contact with the line of Zachari ah but they know very little about him as well other than he was married t hree times and had a total of fifteen children

On the Ancestry Message Board there was a guy by the name of Carl Harbau gh that said that Sylvanus' fathers name was John Merica/Markey. He arriv ed in America in the 1700s with his brothers Christopher and Conrad. He go es on to say that Johannes Markey, later known as John Merica wasa half-br other (I guess to Christopher and Conrad. He says that John Merica was t he beginning of the Merica's on Naked Creek in Rockingham Co., Virgini a. He said that a guy by the name of Charles Fred Medrica did some resear ch on these guys. Seeking proof of parents of Sylvanus Merica or Silvan us Marica or what ever spelling, born in Champaign County in 1825, mov ed to IN, many Sylvanus, Servanus, Silvanus Merica's in Champaingn Count y, but no parents yet proven for this one, he moved to IN, then to KS, a nd eventually to Rapid City SD, where I am, not a relative of mine, b ut I want to find his parents. Parents must have two daughter and son Silv anus and Joseph and Zack likely. When Sylvanus died he had two brothers, o ne in KS, and one in CO, two sisters in KS, any help would be appreciated.
