Jake was one of the gallant 66th and has shown himself to be as good a citizen in his new home in the west as he was a soldier in the army.

1920 Census Mary R Austin, niece age 6
St Paris Ohio Graduate 1896
August 2, 1897 Friday evening one of the most villainous and dastardly attempts at crimin al assault conceivable was made upon two of the most estimable and respect able young ladies of St. Paris. Early in the evening Rollo Shofstal and h is chum, Dayton Snyder, ofDayton, Ohio, who have been spending the summ er in the Shofstal country villa at Addison* drove to St. Paris and call ed upon Miss Myrtle Losh and Miss Eva Richeson at the formers home. About nine o'clock the young men suggested a ride and they all got into o ne buggy and drove southwest of St. Paris, until a lonely part of the ro ad in the vicinity of the Swigart farm was reached, about three miles fr om town. Here the young fiends stopped and they seizing the young ladie s, pulled them from the buggy. A fierce struggle ensued between both you ng ladies and their brutal assailants. Miss Losh succeeded in pushing Snyd er into a barbwire fence, where he became sufficiently entangled to perm it her escape to the Swigart residence, where she aroused the inhabitan ts and told them ofMiss Richeson's peril. Mr. Swigart seized a shotgun a nd firing it off, started for the road. The report of the gun frightened y oung Shofstal and perhaps saved Miss Richeson's life. The fiend had stru ck her in the face with his fists and strangled her until blood gushed fr om her mouth and nostrils. She presented a pitiable sight when found. H er nose was almost broken and her discolored features swollen beyond recog nizance. The indentures of the fiends fingers in her throat were still vis ible. Her waist, which was covered with blood, was tom in shreds. The young ladies were driven to their homes by Robert Nicholas and as so on as their parents became cognizant of the terrible occurrence, warran ts were issued and Marshall Tappy, with J. J. Richeson, a brother ofMiss R icheson, and several others as deputies. went to the Shofstal residen ce in Addison where they guarded the house until the arrest was made in t he morning. They were lodged in the St. Paris prison. Owing to Miss Riches on's precarious condition, the hearing was postponed until five o'clo ck in the evening. In the meantime the news had spread like wild-fire through the country a nd St. Paris was thronged with excited people. A pioneer's meeting in prog ress at Addison was broken up and all started for St. Paris. Much exciteme nt prevailed and lynching was talked of It is reported that a rope had be en placed in readiness over one of the limbs of the big tree in front of t he prison. Mr .Buroker appeared for the defendants and requested a continu ance of the hearing, which Mayor Bollinger refused. He, however, granted t he attorney an hour in which to consult to his clients. By this time the crowd had increased to such an extent and became so demon strative that it was deemed inadvisable to bring the culprits into cour t. A private hearing was held in their cells, after which they were spirit ed through the rear entrance and hastily driven to Urbana, where SheriffMc Lain, not desiring another experience with a mob, received the prisoners a nd drove them to Springfield. After the excitement abated, they were retur ned to the Urbana jail Tuesday morning to await the action of the grand ju ry, under bond of$I,OOO each. Mrs. Shofstal, who is an estimable lady and stands high in social circl es in Dayton, has the sympathy of all on account of the disgrace her scape grace son has brought upon her . Saturday she visited the Richeson home a nd offered to compromise but her offers were spumed and rejected, as the p arents are resolved to push the case to the utmost.
