Greenville, Ohio- Frances S Heindl, 77, of 262 Marion Drive, formerly of Arcanum, Ohio, died Saturday, may 27, 1995, at Heartland of Greenville. She was born Nov 1, 1917 to Marshall and Lida (Foose) Evilsizor in Trotwood, Ohio. She was a homemaker and a member of Trotwood church of the Brethren. Survivors include two sons, Louis C Heindl, Jr of Pittsburg, Ohio and Thomas L Heindl of Greeneville; two daughters, Nancy baker and Patricia Fourman, both of Arcanum; two brothers, Lewis Evilsizor of Vandalia, Ohio, and Donald Evilsizor of Larwill; a sister, Marge Anthony of painter Creek, Ohio; 9 grandchildren and 11 great grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her husband, Louis C Heindl, Sr who died last October, two sisters and a great grandson. Service will be at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday, may 30, at Zechar Bailey funeral home in Greeneville, with the rev Bob Pfieffer officiating. Burial will be in Abbottsville Cemetery. Earl C. "Red" Pence, 80, Urbana, formerly of 235 W. Troy St., St. Paris, died at 11:15 a.m., Thursday, June 15, 1995, in Champaign Nursing Home, Urbana. He was born on Aug. 29, 1914, in St. Paris, the son of Faye and Bertha Ada (Sutton) Pence. He was a retired employee of the Hobart Brothers Company in Troy, and he attended the St. Paris First Baptist Church. He is survived by his wife, Norma Ethel (Evilsizor) Pence, to whom he was married on Oct. 23, 1935; one daughter and son-in-law, Janice and Dale "Mike" Davis, St. Paris; four grandsons, Denver, Dean, Don and Dan Davis; four great-granddaughters, Niki, Missy, Danielle and Maggie Davis; and one sister, Sarah Pence, St. Paris. He was preceded in death by his parents and one brother, Cecil Pence. The funeral service will be held at 11 a.m., Monday, in the Richeson-Wickham and Atkins Funeral Home, St. Paris, with Pastor William E. Blain Jr., of the St. Paris Church of the Nazarene, officiating. Burial will be in Evergreen Cemetery. Visitation will be held from 4 to 7 p.m., Sunday, in the funeral home."

She was born on Aug 17, 1917 in Champaign Co. the daughter of Jesse and Lydia (Taylor) Evilsizor. She was a member of Lagonda Avenue United Methodist church, Springfield. She is survived by eight nieces and nephews; and one brother and sister-in-law, Richard and Martha F. Evilsizor, Urbana. She was preceded in death by her husband, Paul Spurgur, a sister, Beatrice Kohn, and 2 brothers, Donald and Loren Evilsizor. Friends may call from 1:30 to 2:30 p.m. Friday, in the Walter-Schoedinger Funeral Home, Urbana. The funeral service will be held at 2:30 p.m., in the funeral home. She was a homemaker and worked in her home with direct clothing sales for ten years. She attended St John's Lutheran Church, Green Special Homemaker, Ladies of the Orient, Zuanna; Little Miami Rebeka Lodge No 379, Daughters of America, Home City Chapter #27.Survivors include two sons, Lloyd (Frank) F and Charles E STRATTON of Springfield; two daughters, Barbara Mae DUNCAN of Springfield and Ruth I GILLETTE of Lebanon, Tennessee; seven grandchildren; one step-grandchild; sixteen great grandchildren; and three step-great grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her husband, Lloyd W STRATTON in January of 1979; a sister, Esther GERHARDT ; and three brothers, Norman, Paul and Millard EVILSIZOR . She was born in Urbana, Ohio, on June 5, 1923, the daughter of J Luther and Mary (COMER) EVILSIZOR . A graduate of Urbana Local School in 1941 and attended Moore's Business College. Retired from W B Marvin Manufacturing Company in July 1990, following 46 years service. She is survived by daughters, Sherry PYLE of Tremont City, and Debi GRIMM of Springfield, Ohio, son and daughter-in-law, Greg and Laura BOYER of Tremont City, Ohio, four granddaughters, Heidi PYLE , Holly PYLE , Cari GRIMM, and Whitney Elizabeth BOYER , two great grandsons, Lucas PYLE and Christopher OILER ; one brother, Charles W (Bill) EVILSIZOR; and one sister, Betty WATSON , both of Urbana, Ohio; sister-in-law and brother-in-law Sherm and Norma Jean LARRY of Cable, Ohio; and several nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her husband Charles W (Bill) BOYER on August 12, 1994. GRANBURY- Leland Ray Scott, 61, who retired from the Air Force and was a former employee of Lockheed Aircraft, died Friday in Watauga. Memorial service 11 a.m. Saturday in Holly Hills Memorial Park in Granbury. Mr Scott was born Oct 21, 1934 in Corpus Christi, Texas. Evelsizer, 75, of North Fort Myers, Fla., formerly of Morton, died Wednesday, Nov. 1, 1995, at his residence.Born Aug. 9, 1920, in Congerville to Carl and Mary Hexamer Evelsizer, he married Lorene Johnson in May 1940. She survives. Also surviving are two sons, Dennis of Forrest and Darwin of Mascoutah; one brother, Kenneth of Morton; four sisters, Lorene Koets and Irma Medendorp, both of Gilman, Elsie Meier of Ashkum and Wilma Thornton of Lansing, Mich.; four grandchildren; one great-granddaughter; and two stepgreat-grandchildren.He was a tool and die maker at Caterpillar Inc. in Peoria for 35 years, retiring in 1979.A World War II Army veteran, he was a member of the American Legion.He was a member of Messiah Lutheran Church in North Fort Myers. Eula Vivian GEE, 81, Gooding, died Dec 23, 1995 at Gooding Rehabilitation and Living Center in Gooding. She was born on Aug 14, i8n Butler, MO, the daughter of Henry and Francis EVILSIZER. She attended schools in Gooding. She married Charles Gee on Aug 26, 1934 in Gooding at the Methodist parsonage. They farnmed north of Gooding for 56 years. Charles preceded her in death on Aug 22, 1974. She was a lifetime member of the Gooding United Methodist Church, where she was a Sunday school teacher, choir member and active with the United Methodist Women. She was a 50-plus member of the Gooding Grange, member of the 20th Century Club, active with the Gooding Hospital Auxiliary and served for many years with the American Red Cross Blood Bank. She is survived by her children, Peggy (Lawrence) LaRue of Wendell and Larry (Rhonnie) Gee of Rathdrum; sisters, Dorothy (Del) Cagle of Chico, CA, Alma (Bud) Quigley of McCammon, and Opal (Stan) Stanley of Medford, oregon; five grandchildren and three great grandchildren Funeral services were held Dec 28, at Gooding. Virgil E. Evilsizor, 87, Venice, died Feb. 13, 1996.
He was born Dec. 13, 1908, in St. Paris, Ohio, and came to Venice 21 years ago from Medina, Ohio. He was a personnel director for 21 years with Permould Co. He was a member of the Medina Masonic Lodge and the Scottish Rite of Columbus, Ohio. He was a member of the First Christian Church of Venice. Survivors include his wife, Savannah W.; a daughter, Jacqueline MacDonald of Columbus; a sister, Betty Terrell of Urbana, Ohio; two grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.The memorial service will be at 2 p.m. Friday at the First Christian Church of Venice. He married Della (Evilsizer) Kirkwood, who died June 21, 1990. They were married in Hartford City December 24, 1927. He retired from 3m Company in 1968 after 46 years of service. Cecil attended Church of the Nazarene, Hartford City, being a lifelong resident of Blackford County. He is survived by a son Jerry C (wife Arlene) Kirkwood, Hartford City; daughter Jackie K(husband Dean) Shaw, St Petersburg Beach, FL; grandchildren, Chris A Kirkwood, Kimberly A Hyatt, Craig M Kirkwood, Michelle Hefielmire; nine great grandchildren, sister Bertha B Reed, Hartford City and several nieces and nephews. Obituary: PEORIA -- John Adams, 100, of Peoria died at 3:51 a.m. Thursday, Dec. 26, 1996, at OSF Saint Francis Medical Center. Born Jan. 14, 1896, in Peoria to Peter and Anna Lindig Adams, he married Verna Augusta Miller on March 29, 1917. She died May 10, 1975. He also was preceded in death by one daughter, Betty Evelsizer, one grandson, three brothers and four sisters. Surviving are two daughters, Sister Marguerite and Verna Carter, both of Peoria; two sons, Robert of Bartonville and William of Pekin; 14 grandchildren; 28 great-grandchildren; and 21 great-great-grandchildren. An employee of Herschel Manufacturing in East Peoria for 50 years, he retired as a supervisor in 1961. He was a lifelong member of St. Boniface Catholic Church, which is now St. Ann Catholic Church. He also was a life member of the St. Vincent DePaul Society and St. Boniface Men's Club. Services will be at 10 a.m. Monday at his church. The Rev. Richard Horvath will officiate. Visitation will be from 2 to 4 p.m. Sunday at Davison-Fulton Western Chapel, with a Scripture reading at 4 p.m. Visitation also will be 30 minutes before services at the church. A former resident of Dallas, she lived in the Arlington area since 1949. She was a beloved resident of Heritage Oaks. Bessie M Evilsizer, 86, 454 Old Highway 71, died at 1:40 a.m. Sunday, March 23, 1997, at a local nursing home after a short illness. Mrs Evilsizer was born Sept 18, 1910 near Grove, Okla. She lived since 1976 in the Joplin area, moving from the state of Montana. She was a homemaker and a Baptist. She married Clarence Evilsizer on Jan 29, 1929, at Miami, Okla. He survives. Additional survivors include a son, Tom Evilsizer, Lawton, Okla; a daughter Sharon Durels, New York, NY; a sister, Jo Allen, Los Angeles, Calif; nine grandchildren; and nine great grandchildren. Graveside services will be at 1:30 p.m. Thursday at Highland Cemetery, Lawton. Arrangements are under the direction of Becker Funeral Home, Lawton. Local arrangements are under the direction of Mason Woodard Mortuary, Joplin.

Age 73, passed away on April 18, 1997. Ray was born in Tipton on November 9, 1922, the son of Benjamin and Josephine (Murphy) Evilsizer. On July 19, 1947 he married Juanita M. Coy and she survives. Ray was a veteran of WWII serving in the European Theater. He retired from Ford Motor Company in 1976 fter over 30 years of service. He was also a member of the Houghton Lake Association and a member of L.A.W. local 812 of Saline. Raymond is also survived by one son, Ronald (Martha) Evilsizer, one daughter Eileen (Joe) Maissoy, seven grandchildren, two great grandchildren, two brothers, Fay Evilsizer and Jack Evilsizer, all of Manchester, one sister, Betty Geiger of Lewiston, MI. He was preceded in death by two brothers, two sisters and one grandson. Visitation will be on Saturday from 6-8 p.m. and on Sunday from 1-3 and 6-8 p.m.. Funeral services will be on Monday April 21, 1997 at 11 p .m. from Jenter Braun Funeral Home, Manchester with Rev. Thomas A.Davenport, officiating. EUREKA -- Ona Luella Crump, 90, of 700 N. Main, formerly of Carlock and Congerville, died at 10:26 a.m. Saturday, April 19, 1997, at Maple Lawn Health Care. Born Dec. 28, 1906, in Congerville to Bert and Lillie Evelsizer Irion, she married Harold R. Crump on Oct. 21, 1928, in Bloomington. He died Dec. 13, 1988. She also was preceded in death by one daughter, three brothers and one sister. Surviving are one daughter, Patricia Knapp of Goodfield; five grandchildren; one great-grandchild; one brother, Jake Irion of Germantown Hills; and two sisters, Launa Sharp of Eureka and Wilberta Buckley of Chillicothe. She and her husband farmed in the Carlock area before retiring to Congerville.She was a member of Congerville Mennonite Church in Congerville, where she served as a Sunday School teacher for many years. Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Thursday at her church, where visitation will be one hour before services. The Revs. Art Simpson and Robert Harnish will officiate. Burial will be in White Oak Cemetery (the Democrat cemetery) north of Carlock. Memorial services will be at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday in the assembly room of Maple Lawn Homes. The Rev. CSM Carl C. Williams was born November 3, 1916, in Urbana, OH, the son of Harry and Susie Williams (deceased). He graduated from West Liberty High School in 1935 and was a meat cutter in Lakeview, OH, until he was drafted in the U.S. Army on June 25, 1941. He served in World War II with the 90th Infantry Division, as First Sergeant of Co. C, 358th Infantry Regiment. CSM Williams participated in the Normandy invasion of Europe, landing at Utah Beach on D+2 (June 8, 1944). When the war was declard over in Europe (May 8, 1945), he was in Czechoslovakia after being in five major Battle Campaigns, including the Battle of the Bulge. He received the Purple Heart and many other awards and commendations, including the Bronze Star with Oak Leaf Cluster for heroic action, the Army Commendation Medal with three Oak Leaf Clusters, and the Combat Infantry Badge. CSM Williams was discharged from the Army in October 1945 and went back to cutting meat in Springfield, OH. However, he re-enlisted in the Army in December 1948 and retired in August 1968 with the rank of Command Sergeant Major. He was accepted in the U.S. Civil Service in July 1969, retiring in July 1977, when he and his wife, Maxine, moved from Topeka, KS, to San Antonio, TX, where he lived until his death. He was preceded in death by his brother, Clifford Williams. Robert Hugh EVILSIZOR, 62, of 306 S. Washington St., White Pigeon, a former 24 year maintenance man for White Pigeon Schools, died April 26, 1998, at his home following an extended illness. He was born June 6, 1935, in Springfield, Ohio, a son of Willard and Olive (BRIT) EVILSIZOR. A White Pigeon resident most of his life, he graduated in 1954 from White Pigeon High School. He served in the U.S. Navy from 1955 to 1959. On Nov. 20, 1982, he married Toni STRAWSER at White Pigeon United Methodist Church. He was employed four years at RC Cola in Sturgis. After retiring from White Pigeon Schools on July 11, 1996, he delivered papers for the Sturgis Journal. A member of the White Pigeon United Methodist Church, he also was a member of the White Pigeon Men's Bowling Association, the Tuesday Night Golf League, and participated in adult softball and served as a Little League coach. Surviving are his wife; three sons, Brad and Dennis EVILSIZOR, both of White Pigeon, and David EVILSIZOR of Mendon; two step-daughters, Mrs. Johnny (Angel) LEMONS of South Bend, Ind., and Mary HARTMAN of Elkhart; one grandson, Brandon Scott EVILSIZOR; four step-grandchildren, Sherry and Nickie LEMONS and Aaron and Amy HARTMAN; two sisters, Dorothy STEINER of Springfield, Ohio, and Mrs. Reg (Vicki) PLATZ of White Pigeon; and several nieces and nephews. Mrs. Wright was born Feb. 19, 1921 in New Concord, Ohio. She lived in Reynoldsburg and Pataskale, Ohio before moving to Auburn in 1993.She graduated from Muskingum College in 1958 with a degree in education and taught fifth grade for 30 years. Mrs. Wright was an active member of the American Belgian Tervesren Club for 27 years.Survivors include daughter Lynn Wellman of Auburn; granddaughters Staci Carrington of Roseville and Michelle Baker and Aubrey Wellman, both of Auburn; great-granddaughters Bridget, Amanda and Nicole Dean and Cathryn Baker; and great-grandson Joseph Baker. The couple lived on a farmer near Plover until moving to Evan in 1926. A couple of years later they moved to Sleepy Eye and when the hospital was built, she worked there as a cook for many years. Frank preceded her in death in 1951. She married Robert Forsyth on July 16, 1958 in New Ulm and they made their home in Sleepy Eye. She moved to Redwood Falls in 1980.

POLICE KILL MAN WIELDING KNIFE AT FIRE SCENE

Denver Police shot and killed a man armed with a knife in his fire-gutted apartment early Denver police Friday morning after they said he lunged at them with the knife.
Steven Craig Evilsizer, 35, was dead on arrival at Denver Health Medical Center just before 6 a.m., police said. The incident started with a 3 a.m. fire in Evilsizer's apartment at Baker Tower, 330 Acorns St. Firefighters evacuated the third, fourth and fifth floors of the building and put out the fire in apartment 411 before it spread. Arson investigators determined that the fire started in Evilsizer's bed, Denver Fire Department spokeswoman Linell Galleon said. Evilsizer was not in the apartment when fire-fighters arrived. But as investigators were leaving the building, a resident told them he was in a building stairwell. When an investigator went to talk with him, Evilsizer acted "suspicious" and "paranoid," Galleon said. Evilsizer then bolted from the stairwell and tried to get back into his apartment, which had been sealed, officials said. Evilsizer ran into a neighbor's unit and grabbed a knife, Galleon said. He then climbed across the balcony to get back into his apartment. Meanwhile, investigators had called police. When police arrives, firefighters knocked down the door to Evilsizer's apartment. Three officers and two fire investigators pleaded with Evilsizer to put down the knife, but he wouldn't, said Lt. Frank Conner, Denver Police spokesman. In an attempt to get Evilsizer to comply, one office sprayed him with pepper spray. "It had the opposite effect" Conner said. "It enraged him and he lunged at them with the knife." All three policemen, Karl Roller, James Lucero and Dean Walker, opened fire. The arson investigators, who were armed did not fire. The shooting is being investigated by the homicide until, which will turn over its findings to the district attorney's office. Conner could not say how many times the three officers opened fire, but a fourth-floor resident who asked not to be identified said he heard at least ten shots. "There were a lot of shots," he said, "and I knew he was dead." Evilsizer had been arrested in Denver on drug violations in June and July. He had a Denver arrest record dating back to 1985. Several residents of the 11 story building called 911, Galleon said. Most residents were apparently awakened by either the building's fire alarm or neighbors. "I heard people screaming "FIRE"," said resident Katie McEntire.

POLICE OFFICERS EXONERATED IN AUGUST SHOOTING DEATH

Three Denver police officers have been cleared of criminal wrongdoing in the August shooting death of a 35-year-old catering worker. Assistant Denver District Attorney Chuck Lepley said Thursday that Steven Evilsizer "clearly presented an imminent threat" to the lives of officers Karl Roller, James Lucero and Dean Walker. Officers fired 23 bullets at Evilsizer and killed him Aug. 27 after he refused to drop a knife. Evilsizer, who was legally drunk and had a high level of cocaine in his body, had become involved in a confrontation with officers in his burned-out apartment at 330 Acoma St. Lepley said his decision is based on criminal law standards and does not limit any civil action or administrative action by the Denver Police Department. Evilsizer's father, Marshall, said the investigation was "pretty thorough."

"I talked about it with my family and we have decided we're not going to do anything," he said. "We're going to drop the situation and let it die." At the time of the shooting, fire investigators were probing the cause of the fire, which apparently started in Evilsizer's apartment. Evilsizer returned to the scene and picked up a knife with a 4 3/8-inch blade from his next-door neighbor's apartment when investigators said they wanted to speak with him about the fire. One of the fire investigators drew his service pistol when Evilsizer moved toward him, witnesses said. Then Evilsizer climbed from the neighbor's balcony to his own and went into his apartment. Police were called to help. They entered Evilsizer's darkened apartment, which had fire debris and residual smoke, the investigation showed. The officers and several witnesses said Evilsizer was crouched in the bedroom closet, holding what several people said was a blue Thermos and the knife. When Evilsizer refused several orders from the officers to drop the knife, Officer Darren Ulrich shot a blast of pepper spray into his face. Evilsizer then abruptly moved out of the closet, and the three officers fired at him "almost simultaneously," the DA's report stated. The shots were fired in rapid succession, and the officers stopped shooting at almost the same time, the report said. "These facts are all consistent with an instantaneous reaction to an immediate and significant threat to life," the report stated.

Steven Evilsizer didn't have a chance. The 35-year-old catering worker was drunk and high on cocaine the night of Aug. 27 when a fire apparently started in his Acoma Street apartment. When fire investigators encountered him at the scene, they called for police backup. Three Denver police officers arrived, bringing the number of public safety personnel in the apartment to five. All of them were armed with guns. Evilsizer was behaving erratically, according to the police reports, and one of the officers attempted to subdue him with pepper spray. That only enraged him. He lunged at them. The police officers opened fire. The subsequent autopsy report showed 14 bullet wounds, including shots to his head, chest and abdomen. Five of the bullets entered his body from the back. Evilsizer was armed with a steak knife. Police policy stipulates that officers are authorized to defend themselves when it appears they are in imminent danger. Apparently, they determined that this was just such an extreme situation.

In retrospect, that explanation is hard to swallow. If the five officers on the scene, all presumably well trained, alert and working together, had attempted to wrestle the drug-addled Evilsizer to the ground, chances are one of those officers would have received a nasty cut, a superficial knife wound. And even though it probably would have been sufficient force if the officers had jumped him, most of us would believe they were justified in the heat of the moment if one of them had discharged a service weapon and shot Evilsizer in the hand or the leg to disable him. It's just awfully hard to understand why they riddled his body with gunfire, clearly shooting to kill and continuing to fire after he was down, even if his behavior with that steak knife was really, really scary. Denver police and the district attorney are reviewing the case, and this time we shouldn't settle for their all-too-familiar rationalizations for the use of deadly force. Police violence all across the country is growing. As Americans have embraced aggressive efforts to reduce crime, we've averted our eyes to it. Human Rights Watch has found that incidents of police brutality, including shoving, beating and manhandling suspects as well as unjustified shootings, have increased dramatically in 14 major cities over the past five years. While officers usually are vindicated after internal investigations, several victims' families have successfully pursued wrongful-death complaints. Settlements of those claims have cost Denver taxpayers hundreds of thousands of dollars in the last year alone. In Denver, where a videotaped arrest last summer showed officers brutally kicking and beating a suspect; where police indiscriminately gassed a stadium full of college football fans because they looked like they might riot; and where an inebriated man brandishing a steak knife is blown away with 14 bullet wounds, it's time to take a closer look. The same old whitewash won't cut it anymore.

MOM TELLS OF SON'S BITTERSWEET LIFE AND ITS ENDING IN A POLICE SHOOTING

I am the mother of Steven Evilsizer, who was shot and killed by police on Aug. 27. The indescribable heartache of losing our son has prevented me from responding until now, but I feel I owe it to Steven, his wife, his grandparents and his extended family to comment on these articles that have caused so much pain for our family. The media have devoted considerable space to the negative side of our son and how he died. How much space will they allow for his positive side? Regarding the articles:

Immediately after this tragic event, members of the family were inundated with phone calls from the newspapers, radio stations, etc. - each one pressing us for our reaction to the shooting in an obvious attempt to get us to lash out verbally at the police for their actions. (We even received calls and letters from lawyers offering their services for a lawsuit.) In the midst of our emotional anguish, we were trying so very hard to refrain from judgment of the police or making comment until after the investigations were completed. The few comments we did make were taken out of context, and it seemed to us that we were made to sound like cold, uncaring parents - when in fact, the pain and agony of losing our son (especially under such tragic circumstances) interspersed with the inevitable question, What could we have done differently?? were so debilitating. In one article, my husband was made to sound as though he would have recommended "five shots" (when he was trying to make the point that he did not understand why so many shots had to be fired.) At another point, it was stated that I did not condemn the police for their actions, then added almost glibly was my comment, "The police had a job to do." Reporters and media callers admonished us for not being angry enough. (If I were to direct my anger, it would be toward the dealers who reap huge profits from the lives they destroy with the drugs they peddle.)

While they were conducting their investigation, Chuck Lepley of the district attorney's office was very responsive and sensitive to our requests for information. We have now reviewed the investigative reports from the fire investigators and the DA's office and watched the taped interviews of the policemen and the fire investigators involved. As devastating as it is, we cannot deny the fact that Steven's state of mind (altered by the paranoia resulting from high drug/alcohol levels) and his refusal to comply with the policemen's repeated warnings and demands prompted their reactions.

Although we will never understand why the three policemen felt it necessary to fire a total of 23 shots to stop Steven, we are cognizant of the fact that our son's actions placed himself and others in harm's way. We realize he had to be stopped from injuring others with the knife he held in his hand. That's what I meant when I said I understood that the police had a job to do. Did all three policemen overreact? Many seem to think so. The truth is we will never know because we weren't there faced with making those split-second assessments and decisions. And, unlike in the movies, they do not attempt to shoot weapons out of the person's hand or shoot an armed person in the leg, etc.

We thank God that our son's actions did not result in death or injury to the policemen, the firefighters, or the occupants of the apartment building that night.

Additionally, we were horror-struck by two things: First, the horrible "mug shot" photograph that originally appeared on some TV stations and in the newspapers. Is it asking too much for the media to request a decent photograph from the family? Young nieces and nephews were horrified by the photograph because they didn't recognize that person as their Uncle Steve. (The Post and Channel 4 News later substituted another photograph when we pleaded with them to use one provided by the family.)

Second, was it really necessary to include a diagram representing our son's bullet-ridden body in the Oct. 4 article that appeared after the autopsy report was made public?

That depiction was not of a cardboard target for shooting practice - that was our son, for God's sake!! Do you have any idea of the emotional impact that had on the family?

I would like to tell you about the other side of our son. The Steven we knew and loved was sensitive and kind, was deeply touched by the music and lyrics of his favorite songs (he recently expressed to an aunt how the words of the song, "In the Arms of the Angels" by Sarah McLachlan, spoke to him these days). He loved fly fishing, camping, the Colorado mountains, skiing, Eric Clapton songs, airplanes, air shows, cars, Trivial Pursuit, reading, cooking - and his family.

Steven was the first grandchild on both sides and was still called T-Bone, a childhood nickname, by his grandfather.

There was a certain sense of melancholy as he watched his younger brothers go off to college, but he was extremely proud of them: Todd (a pilot) who would call Steve during the good times and ask if he wanted to go flying with him; and Brad (a musician) whose heart ached over the plight of his "big brother" and the call he feared he would receive someday. And did.

Steve's culinary skills (from years in the catering and banquet business) made family holidays very special. He even catered his own wedding! Grandparents, aunts/uncles and cousins knew they could count on Steve for always remembering family birthdays and anniversaries and sending meaningful cards and notes to mark the occasion.

Steve derived such joy in doing special things for his friends and family in an attempt make up for some of the anguish he knew he had caused them. He was especially eager to work alongside his dad on various projects.

Recently, while house/pet sitting for a close friend who was out of town, Steve replanted the newly planted tomato plants that had surrendered to a late frost. He cared. It was reported that Steve was recently a banquet captain at the Hyatt Regency when in fact he was assistant director of outlets, had been named Manager of the Month last December, and had recently been promoted to executive steward due to his many achievements and awards at the Hyatt.

That error may seem trivial to you, but it's important to us in that it says so much about Steve's progress and achievements in overcoming his addiction. (Additionally, while at the Denver Athletic Club, he had been named Employee of the Year.)

Steven received tremendous support from the hotel staff during the periods when he appeared to be winning his battle over his alcoholism; and he was so proud of his accomplishments at the hotel. His memorial service was attended by at least 50 employees from the Hyatt, many of whom came forward to express personal thoughts and recollections of Steve. There were those who knew firsthand of the battle Steve fought every day.

And truly it was a daily battle. He used to say, "I fight it every single day. Some days I win; some days I lose."

And what prompted the lack of self-esteem that led to his addiction? As his parents, we ask ourselves that question every day; I wish I had the answer. Why does a young boy with an extremely high IQ turn to drugs? (Steve attended Mission Viejo Elementary, Laredo Middle School, and Smoky Hill High School where he had been active in scouting, sports, etc.) I do know that he still carried the scars caused by the seemingly harmless teasing and harassment by classmates in elementary and middle school (when "acceptance" and "belonging" is everything). Even as a slender adult, he used to say that every time he looked in the mirror he saw that fat kid that the other kids made fun of. If only kids could realize that words even more than actions can cut such deep wounds - wounds that sometimes never heal.

Whatever the cause(s), his addiction caused Steve to lose his feeling of self-worth, his job, his wife and ultimately his life. Seemingly at the top of his game in December, he relapsed in January (for whatever reason) and started the downward spiral from which he could not seem to recover. The cycle was always the same: relapse, followed by unbearable pain, guilt and depression (not to mention the brushes with the law), soothed only by more alcohol or drugs.

The weariness from his insomnia was a constant. He struggled valiantly for a long time and sought help through an extensive drug/alcohol rehab program, AA, one-on-one counseling, etc. Steven knew he had a wife and family that loved and supported him, but even that was not enough. (As parents, we are thankful that he had a loving wife who filled a void in his life no parent can ever fill; but she could no longer endure the emotional and financial/legal consequences of his relapses and blackouts.) He eventually caved in to the debilitating weariness that overcame him. He used to say, "I'm so tired of starting over." While his wife and family struggled to draw the line between "support" and "enabling," he set forth on a path of self-destruction. And our repeated attempts to intercede were in vain. He felt he had lost everything and had simply given up.

In my heart I feel that it was God who decided when Steve would leave this world, not the policemen that night. The man they shot was not the Steven we knew and loved; but he took our Steven with him.

We had "lost" the son we knew before the first shot was ever fired. Perhaps God felt Steven had struggled long enough with the emotional roller coaster caused by the periods of positive recovery shattered by the recurrent relapses.

Now there will only be one set of footprints in the sand. We take comfort in knowing that he is finally at peace - a peace that seems to have eluded him in this life. No more pain, no more struggle.

Our lives have been forever changed; there will always be that void. Neither tears nor unwarranted lawsuits will bring him back.

As we struggle to bring closure and to go on with our lives one day at a time, we are haunted by the events of Aug. 27; but we will not allow them to overshadow the good memories of a beloved son. In our hearts, he will live forever!

Obituary: Evilsizer, 35, who worked in local restaurants, had led a troubled life.
His legal history, according to his father, included two arrests for driving under the influence, and one for possession of drugs.Police said he also had a history of mental problems.An autopsy report showed cocaine in Evilsizer's blood at the time of his death. He was also drunk.Evilsizer was killed in his apartment at 330 Acoma St.Firefighters doused a fire, and suspected Evilsizer set it off by torching his bed. Arson investigators said they tried to question Evilsizer, but he brandished a knife and fled to his charred apartment.Police responded, and sprayed him with mace to subdue him. Richard J. Faulkner, 74, passed away Monday, February 28, 2000, at 2:49 A.M. at Doctors' Hospital West, Franklin County. He was born April 19, 1925, in Champaign County Ohio, the son of Alpha C. and Edith (Evilsizor) Faulkner. He was a member of the Westville United Methodist Church, a 50 year member of K. of P. Lodge, Westville. He was a life long farmer of Champaign County, he served on the Champaign Landmark Board for 12 years and in 1999 was chosen as Champaign County Farmer of the year along with his son, Lenny. Survivors include his wife of 49 years, Olajeane (Stradling) Faulkner of Urbana, Ohio, two daughters and sons-in-law, Toni Lee and Jerry Cain of Urbana, Ohio, Trixi Lyn and Terry Myers of Ostrander, Ohio; one son and daughter-in-law, Lenny Dee and Zoe Ellen Faulkner of Urbana; sisters Edna Shaffer of Urbana, Zelpha and Russell Arnold of Urbana, Leah Ludlow of Saint Paris, Ohio, Lillian and Guy Parrott of Saint Paris, Ohio, and Frances Laughman of Urbana; brother, Herbert and Betty Faulkner of Urbana; Donald and Sandy Faulkner of West Liberty, Ohio; Nelson and Jane Faulkner of Saint Paris; eleven grandchildren, Luke, Andrew, and Amanda Smith, Allen and Ashley Cain, Kirby, Kelsey, and Shelby Faulkner, and Mandy, Makala, and Tanner Myers, and two great grandsons, Drew Smith and Blake Miller, several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, and brother Elden Faulkner, sisters-in-law Margaret Faulkner, Harriett Faulkner, and brothers-in-law Charles Laughman, Lee Ludlow, and Lester Shaffer. Following his wishes, his body will be cremated. A gathering of family and friends will be held on Wednesday, from 2-4 and 6-8 P.M.in the LITTLETON & RUE FUNERAL HOME, Urbana, where Knights of Pythias services will be held at 8:00 P.M. Iva F. Stayton Sept. 22, 1924 - March 2, 2000 A lifelong area resident, Iva Fay Stayton, 75 years old, of Ash Road, Granger, passed away after a brief illness at 8:10 a.m. on Thursday, March 2, 2000, in the St. Joseph Community Hospital in Mishawaka. Iva was born on Sept. 22, 1924, in Coalmont, Ind., to the late Simon Ray Miller, Sr., and Ida Mae (Kellems) Miller. On Nov. 30, 1941, in South Bend, Iva and Maurice G. Stayton were married. Iva worked at various local companies including Domore, Ball Band (Uniroyal) XL Corporation and Twin Branch Highlander Laundromat. She retired in 1990. Dancing, listening to soft contemporary music and enjoying family were Iva's favorite activities. She entered several dance competitions and won many awards. However, her children, grandchildren, and great- grandchildren were her real enjoyment. She is survived by her husband, Maurice; a son, Jerry (Becky) Stayton of Osceola; three daughters, Judy (Gary) Secor of Elkhart, Sharon (Charles, Sr.) Sowders of Mishawaka and Deborah (Timothy) Kling of Elkhart. In addition, there are six granddaughters, Kelley (Secor) Nease, Shelley(Secor) Dietz, Stacey Secor, Jennifer Webb, Jill (Stayton) Deckard and Michele Jennings; four grandsons, Jerry Stayton, Jr., Roy Webb II, Adam Kling and Alex Kling; six great-grandchildren, Zachary Nease, Garrett Nease, Jacob Dietz, Alec Dietz, Paige Dietz and Jared Deckard; a sister, Martha Chapman of California; and three brothers, S. Ray Miller, Jr., of Elkhart, Richard L. Miller of Kokomo and Robert G. Miller of Granger; and by four step-grandsons. Iva was preceded in death by her parents; a brother, Nolan Miller; and six sisters, Betty Miller, Hazel Miller, Edith Miller, Gertrude Chestnutt, Mary Belle Evelsizer and Cecil Harris. Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. on Monday, March 6, 2000, in the Twin Branch Bible Church, 3807 Vistula Road, Mishawaka, Ind. Rev. Daniel Boes, pastor of the church, will officiate. Graveside services and burial will follow at Fairview Cemetery in Mishawaka. Friends may visit with the family from 2 to 7 p.m. on Sunday, March 5, in the Palmer Funeral Home, 1109 Lincolnway West, Osceola, and one hour prior to services in the church on Monday. MAE J. DOVE, 67, Lima, died at 11:35 a.m. March 18, 2000, at St. Rita's Medical Center. She was born March 13, 1933, in Urbana to Gilbert and Myrtle (Evilsizor) Cotrell. On Aug. 5, 1950, she married Rev. Henry A. Dove, who survives. Mrs. Dove was a homemaker and a member of Faith Temple Church. Richard Q Patton, 82 of Springfield, died Saturday March 25, 2000 at 8:20 a.m. in Community Hospital. He was born in Caldwell Ohio, on July 9 1917, the son of Richard E and Nell (Rhodes) Patton. He was a United States Army Veteran serving in World War II. He retired in 1974 from International Harvester Co following 38 years service. He was a member of the United Auto Workers Local 402. He is survived by his wife of 53 years, Leona (Evilsizor) Patton. She worked for the Agriculture Stabilization and Conservation Services offices in Douglas and Jefferson counties for a few years before her marriage. On June 10, 1940, she married Herman C. Butell, Jr. at Annunciation Catholic Church, Baldwin City. They were married over 43 years before his death on September 9,1983.After her marriage, she became a homemaker and farmwife for the remainder of her life. She was a lifelong Baldwin City area resident. Dresden - Rachel J. "Joan of Arc" (Dulac) Evilsizer, 65, of Dresden, died at 11:20 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 9, 2000, at her home. Born May 22, 1935 in Waterville, she was a daughter of the late Barnaby and Violet Dulac. On July 25, 1953, she married Richard L. Evilsizer, who survives. Mrs. Evilsizer was a member of St. Thomas Catholic Church in Zanesville. In addition to her husband, she is survived by a son, Allan Evilsizer and wife Linda of Zanesville; a daughter Twila G. Houston and husband Tom of Columbus; five grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; two sisters, Marlene Reilly and husband John of Elliott, Maine and Nancy Tobin and husband John of New Market, N.H.; and a stepfather, Francis Hanlon of Portsmouth, N.H. Mrs. Evilsizer was preceded in death by her grandparents, a granddaughter and a great-granddaughter. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated Tuesday, Sept. 12 at 1:30 p.m. at St. Thomas Church with Father Michael DeTemple. Burial will follow in St. Mary's Mattingly Settlement Cemetery. Mrs. EVENSIZER was born Leah E. Niemann on March 15, 1916, in Devils Lake,N.D. She lived in Spokane and Barlow before moving in 1951 to Forest Grove, where she and her husband owned the Royal Coachman Cafe and bus depot from 1959 until retiring in 1978. She moved to The Dalles in 1986. In 1936, she married Clyde L. Evensizer; he died in 1984. Survivors include her son, Milton; daughters, Marvel McCanna and Myrna LaStrapas; brothers, Clifford Niemann and John Niemann; 13 grandchildren; 21 great-grandchildren; and two reat-great-grandchildren. After the war he worked for Convair, general Dynamics, General Atomic Co, Gulf Oil Corp, and Chevron Corp in San Diego. he also worked for Fort St Vrain Nuclear Power Plant in Longmont, and Energy International in Underground Coal Gasification in Rawlings, Wyoming, before retiring to Great Falls in January 2000. He married Marlene Kopren in 1970 in Escondido, Calif. He enjoyed coaching Little League, Colt League and Pony League in San Diego. He was an avid golfer and bowler, and a fan of the San Diego Chargers and the San Diego padres. He also enjoyed playing senior softball and watching all sports.

Flanagan---Oleta Hartzler Carver, 79, of Peoria, formerly of Flanagan, died at 4 pm Sunday (September 9, 2001) at the home of her daughter in Nashville. Her graveside service will be at 10:30 am Wednesday at Waldo Township Cemetery, rural Flanagan. A memorial service will be held at 3 pm Wednesday at Grace Presbyterian Church, Peoria, the Rerend Douglas Lightly officiating. Visitation will be from 5 to 8 pm today (Sept 10 or 11) at Froelich Memorial Home, Flanagan, and for one hour before the service at

Mrs. Carver was born Dec. 18, 1921, in Congerville, the daughter of Elmer and Launa Irons Sharp. She married Floyd Hartzler in 1943 in Congerville.He died in 1981. She married John Carver in 1986 in Peoria. He died in 1998. Surviving are one daughter, Judy (winston) Gaffron, Nashville; one son, Rodney (Becki) Hartzler, Lexington, Ky; and four sisters-in-law, Mary Sharp, Congerville; Alta Litwiller and Ruth Schertz both of Normal; and Aldine Hartzler, Meadows. Also surviving are four grandchildren, Win and Anne Gaffron, both of Nashville; and Dana and Ryan Hartzler both of Cincinati, Ohio; and many nieces and nephews. Her parents and a brother, Floyd Sharp, preceded her in death. Mrs. Carver was a graduate of Normal Community High School and the Mennonite School of Nursing in Bloomington. END. Mennonite School of Nursing is now a separate college within Illinois State University.

Donald E. "Flash" Evilsizor, 53, of Marysville died Thursday, Dec. 20, 2001, at Riverside Hospice after a hard-fought and courageous battle with cancer since 1999. He worked for the Scotts Company for 30 years and was a member of Moose Lodge 1651. He enjoyed fishing, hunting and good country music. He was born July 14, 1948, in Irwin to Ralph and Harriett Walker Evilsizor and was predeceased by his father, a sister, Eloise Rogers; and a brother, Raymond Evilsizor. He was born Dec. 18, 1911, in Irving, the son of David Howard and Tessa Filenda Evilsizer Barrett. He had lived in Oneida for 13 years and in Wetmore, Sabetha and Havensville. He married Irene Dorothy Adams on April 3, 1957, in Seneca. She died Aug. 26, 2000. Survivors include a sister, Evelyn Barrett Cook, Topeka; and a brother, George Barrett, Riley. Services will be at 1 p.m. Friday at Mercer Funeral Home in Holton. Burial will be in Sabetha Cemetery. Born on October 12 1941 in Nashville, she was the daughter of Freida (Edwards) Emrick, who survives in Hoyleton. Also surviving are her children, Teena Pulcher and husband Kenneth of Dupo, John Maier of Staunton, Timmy Maier of Dupo, Robin Partee of Rockway Beach Missouri and Randy Partee of Mesa Arizona; one sister Dixie Watkins of Decatur; 18 grandchildren and three g-grandchildren. Mrs Koets farmed for nearly 50 years. She had also worked at Baxter's Grocery Store in Gilman and retired from the Gilman High School Cafeteria. Her husband, John Koets, whom she married Jan 23 1929 in Danfoth, died Feb 28, 1994. His wife and children were former residents of Wood County. He worked as a construction foreman for Ohio Bell, retiring after 32 years. Mr. Evelsizer was a member of the Telephone Pioneer Club, Foreman's Club, and a former member of the Lions Club. He was a Navy veteran of the Korean War. Born Dec. 9, 1935 in Akron to Emmitt and Pauline (Dancy) Evelsizer, he married Ruth Riling in North Carolina on May 28, 1981, and she survives. He also worked as a sonsultant for Allied Enterprises for 4 years. Surviving are his wife, Judith Evilsizer, two daughters, Cheryl Bryant and Sandy K Swain (husband Ryan); two sons, Randy Evilsizer (wife Marjorie) and D Max Evilsizer, a stepdaughter Rozanne K West (husband Kenny); two stepsons, Chris W DeWitt (wife Shelley) and Scott A DeWitt (wife Kim); two sisters, Loretta Clark and Joan Needler; 17 grandchildren and a great grandchild. JOHN DAVID NORRIS of Lawrenceville expired quietly in his home on Wednesday, October 23 surrounded by his family. He was born on June 9, 1922 to Carl Leslie and Mabel Kramer Norris. He was the oldest of five children. John grew up at the Ohio Soldiers and Sailors Orphanage in Xenia, Ohio. Upon graduation, he joined the Navy Seabees; serving in the South Pacific, where he received the Purple Heart. He returned to Springfield and enrolled at Wittenberg University. There he initiated the comic strip Torchy and Ezry for the Wittenberg newspaper, the Torch. Following graduation, John worked for Wright Patterson Air Force Base, and for the Dayton Journal Herald. He was also associated with L.M. Berry and Associates. California beckoned and John worked for Lockheed, working on the original configuration for the Polaris missile. He received a presidential commendation for his work. John returned to Xenia to teach at the O.S.S.O. Home. Later, he taught commercial art at the Springfield-Clark Joint Vocational School. John was a fixture at local art shows where he drew caricatures, and at parties where he performed his Chalk Talk show. He was honored in July of this year as guest artist at the Springfield Summer Arts Festival. John is survived by his wife, Annalou (Harris), and five children including sons Richard (Peggy) of Kettering; David (Terri) and Benjamin of Springfield; Christopher (Jan) of Greenwood, South Carolina; and daughter Jennifer (Larry) Crabtree of Springfield. In addition, John is survived by sisters Mary Bissey of Springfield and Ella Mae Polaski of Columbus. He will be sadly missed by 12 grandchildren and 6 great-grandchildren. There will be a memorial service at the North Hampton United Church of Christ on Saturday, October 26 at 1:00 pm. It will be followed by a fellowship meal and gathering of friends and family. Per John's request, his remains were donated to Wright State University. She was born October 18, 1908 in Tremont City, Ohio the daughter of Harry E. and Ida (French) Woodard. Anna was a graduate of Tremont City High School and involved in music all her life. She was a piano instructor for 40 years and played and instructed the organ for over 22 years and was the funeral home organist for 25 years. Anna was the choir director beginning at Tremont City United Methodist Church and then at Grace Columbus Avenue and Lagonda United Methodist Churches. She was a member of the Lagonda United Methodist Church; began the Children’s Junior Choir in 1948; and was a member of the Ruth Circle of the Church. She is survived by a son, Dale (Marilyn) Kissell of Springfield; a daughter, Carol (Harry) Federspill of Indianapolis, Indiana; two brothers, William Woodard of Springfield and Edwin Woodard of Witter, California; a sister, Marjorie Burk of Springfield; nine grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews. W Willard BAKER, 86 went home to be with the Lord on Thursday, March 20, 2003 following a brief illness. He was born in Conover, Ohio , March 7, 1917, the son of Otho W and Mary (MERRITT) BAKER. He is survived by his wife of 55 years, Donna L (EVILSIZOR); three sons and daughters-in-law, David and Sue of Beavercreek, Dale and Greg both of Springfield; two grandchildren, Matthew (Nicole) and Jamie (Jeff); and three great grandchildren, Ashley, Kaitlyn, and Reagan; sister Phyllis ROLFE; sister-in-law Frances BAKER; and several nieces and nephews. Willard was preceded in death by his parents and brother, Herman. Willard loved his family and he loved his church, Maiden Lane Church of God. Coming to Maiden Lane Church of God in 1946, he worked in many areas of service. Willard was a Youth Leader, Sunday School Teacher of both Junior High and Adults, he was a deacon, a trustee, and usher (being Head Usher for several years), a bus driver , Secretary to the Sunday School and one of the greatest loves was working with the Christian Edu-Care as board member and for many years he was Chairman of the Board. More recently working with the kindergarten children, where he was known by "Grandpa Willard." He loved his country as well, serving in the Army Air Corp, during WW II in the Philippines as a Master Sergeant and Crew Chief of B-24's. Prior to his service in WWII, Willard farmed with his father and after returning from war, he was a Millwright for several years then joined WP-AFB/AFIT Department and retired from Civil Service in 1982. He continued working for his country by serving with the Republican party of Clark County in many areas. Willard loved to be with people and after retirement continued to work driving cars through dealer trades for Monte Zinn for several years. Services will be on Monday, March 24, 2003 at 2 P.M. in the Maiden Lane Church of God with Rev Randall Spence officiating with visitation from 12 p.m. to the time of service. She was born in Champaign County on Jan 6, 1926 the daughter of the late Ottis Carol and Ada (Evilsizor) Nicholas. Mrs Sarver was a 1944 graduate of Westville High School and was a former member of the Keith Cretors Post #148 American Legion Auxillary, St Paris. She had been engaged in farming and in the past was also very active as a 4-H leader. Survivors include two sons, Nicholas (Nicholett) Sarver of St Paris and Richard E Sarver of Logan; four grandchildren, Tiffany (Bill) Grote of Troy, Annette (Jeff) Bowers of St Paris and Jason and Joshua Sarver, both of Columbus, and a great grandson, Michael Bowers of St Paris. In addition to he parents, Pauline was preceded in death by her husband, Max Sarver, whom she married on Aug 30, 1944 and passed away on Aug 9, 1967; two sisters, Carolene Whitehead and Kathleen Pence, and one prother, Roderick Nichols. HARTFORD CITY - Olive Mae Reichard, 94, died on Sunday, July 13, 2003, at Miller's Merry Manor Nursing Home of complications. Her former address was 632 E. Main St. in Hartford City. She moved to Miller's Merry Manor Nursing Home in August 1996. She spent most of her life in Blackford County. Olive was born on March 1, 1909, in Grant County to Harold Marshall and Mary F. Shields Marshall. Both parents are deceased. Olive married Charles Paul Reichard on Nov. 27, 1957, in Hartford City. Charles preceded her in death on Jan. 20, 1977. She was also preceded in death by a daughter, Patricia Vollet, in 1996. She was preceded in death by two brothers, Paul Marshall and Grant (Bud) Marshall, and two sisters, Betty Marshall and Audrey Elliott. Olive was a homemaker. She had formerly worked at the Canning Factory and restaurants around town. Olive is survived by two daughters, Frances Parkinson of Muncie and Dixie D. Coleman of Hartford City; a son, Ralph Evilsizer Jr. (wife: Joyce) of Muncie; a stepson, Charles P. DONNA LOUISE BAKER 81, went home to be with her Lord on Friday, August 15, 2003, following a brief illness. She was born in Springfield, Ohio, February 19, 1922, the daughter of Herbert E. and Bessie M. (Plantz) Evilsizor. Donna is survived by her three sons and daughter-in-law David and Sue of Beavercreek, Dale and Greg of Springfield; two grandchildren, Matthew (Nichole) and Jamie (Jeff); and four great-grandchildren, Ashley, Kaitlyn, Reagen, and Alexander; sisters, Eileen (Grover) Pendleton and Norma Griest; and many special nieces, nephews, and cousins. Donna was preceded in death by her best friend and loving husband Willard having been married for 55 years. Willard died March 20, 2003. Also by her parents, brother-in-law Roger Griest, and several aunts and uncles. Donna loved her Family and she loved her church, Maiden Lane Church of God in Springfield. She grew up at Maiden Lane serving in many, many areas of the church during the years. Donna loved the Sunday School and worked as teacher and secretary in several different departments. She was also one of the book auditors for the Sunday School for many years. When there was a need to serve, Donna was willing to help. In recent years she worked with the Visitor Lists contacting all new visitors to Maiden Lane Church. Organizing the Greeters for Sunday services was another area that Donna enjoyed. The one responsibility she accepted with greatest honor was that of being a faithful prayer warrior. Donna believed in the power of prayer and served her Lord through this ministry. Outside of the church, Donna held many positions in the business world. She began her career at the downtown Woolworth store. Then to Crowell Collier, Olan Mills, Limbocker's, and the First National Bank. She ended her career in business with a position for many years at the Clark County Board of Elections. She was active in the Republican Party and received the Republican of the Year Honors. The job Donna loved the most was that of wife and mother. She so enjoyed being a Mom. Donna had a true love for others and shared this through cards and notes. She loved to send special thoughts to family and friends, few if any will forget this special talent that she use so freely and willingly to help lift and encourage others. Funeral Services will be held Tuesday August 19, 2003 at 2:00 p.m. in the Maiden Lane Church of God with Pastor Randall Spence officiating. The family will receive friends from 11:00 a.m. until the time of service in the Welcome Center of the church. Burial will follow in Ferncliff Cemetery. Ransom and Grace started their family in Grants Pass, then moved to Hilt, CA 5 years later in 1936. While raising their family in Hilt, Mr. Smith worked 36 years for the Fruit Growers Supply Company, as a mill worker; lumber piler (for 27 of those years), carpenter, night watchman, and various other positions in the mill. He was a volunteer fire fighter and worked, throughout his years in Hilt, on the various town and forest fires that threatened the community.He was a veteran of the California State Guard during WWII. After retiring from the mill in 1972, the Smith family moved to Hornbrook, CA in 1973.Mr. Smith's second retirement came in 1995 after 18 years of working as a ranch hand irrigating over 1000 acres alone, and working cattle.He was an avid hunter and fisherman, and made his last hunting trip with his four sons this Fall. Mr. Smith enjoyed camping and woodcutting with the grandkids, arrowhead and bottle collecting, carpentry, and gold panning/mining. He loved spending time with his family, sharing his knowledge or many colorful anecdotes and stories of times gone by. His twinkling sky-blue eyes and snowy white beard gave him the likeness of a slender Santa to the delight of many youngsters. He will be remembered with love, and missed.Survivors include; 4 sons, Harvey Travis Smith of Medford, William Harris Smith of Crescent, OR; James Darrell Smith of Medford and Clayton Roger Smith of Central Point; 2 daughters, Joan Dolores Smith of Hornbrook, CA, and June Juanita Sprague, Medford; 2 brothers: Daniel Evensizer of Wimer, and Samuel Evensizer of Oregon City; 19 Grandchildren; 27 Great-grandchildren; 10 Great-great-grandchildren. JOHN J. "TED" (POGO) EDWARDS 72, of Mechanicsburg, passed away Wednesday, February 25, 2004 in the Mercy Medical Center, Springfield, Ohio. He was born November 12, 1931 in Mechanicsburg, Ohio, the son of John and Goldie (Evilsizor) Edwards. He married Thelma (Jordan) on July 30, 1952. Ted was a 1950 graduate of Mechanicsburg High School. He worked for Navistar International for 30 years. He was also a member of Grace Baptist Church and a volunteer for Mercy Memorial Hospital in the Radiology Department. She was born Feb 27, 1937 in Mechanicsburg, Ohio the daughter of John and Golide (Evilsizor) Edwards. Patricia attended Mechanicsburg Schools and was employed at Scotts Seed factory of Mechanicsburg. Patty and Mildred, who passed away last year lived at home and cared for their parents until their passing and then they cared for each other and were inseperable. They also would babysit for all of their nieces and nephews. She is survived by three loving and protecting brothers, Jimmy, Robert Bob (Phyllis) and Mike (Dyna) Edwards, two loving and dedicated sisters, Phyllis Blackburn and Beverly Sue (Paul) Haffner, a sister-in-law, Thelma Edwards, all of Mechanicsburg and several nieces and nephews. She is preceded in death byher parents, her sister Mildred, two brothers, David Thomas and John Ted Edwards, a brother-in-law, William Bill Blackburn and a sister-in-law Bonnie Jo Edwards. Marjorie Leona Adkins, 79, of Urbana died Thursday April 15, 2004 in her residence. She was born in Champaign County on May 1 1924 the daughter of Grover R and Dorothy L (McConnaha) Evilsizor. She was a member of Eastern Star Caroline Chapter, Order of White Shrine of Jerusalem and the Episcopal Church of the Epiphany, Urbana. MARY V. (JERRIE) GRISSO 87, of Springfield, died Friday, April 30, 2004 in Greeley, Colorado. She was born July 27, 1916, in Springfield, Ohio, daughter of Clifford and Helen (Zerkle) Scott. She worked at the Crowell Collier Company in Springfield after graduating from Oak Grove High School in Enon, Ohio. She enjoyed bowling, gardening and was a member of Green Hedges and Starlight Garden Clubs. She loved to travel and was a member of Sigma Alpha sorority in Springfield. She worked for several years in the cafeteria at Shawnee High School. She was married to Norman Evilsizor for 32 years. Following his death, she was married to Marvin Grisso for 25 years until his death in 1998. The past six years, she lived with her daughter in Greeley, Colorado, and most recently resided at the Hospice of Northern Colorado. She was an expert seamstress and enjoyed being a homemaker, mother and grandmother. She is survived by sons Gail Evilsizor and his wife Joy of Marietta, Georgia, and Gary Evilsizor and his wife Val of Lake Havasu City, Arizona.; daughter, Judie L. Thompson of Greeley, Colorado; grandsons Rob Williams of Steamboat Springs, Colorado; Nick Williams of Oak Creek, Colorado; Derek Evilsizor of Denver, Colorado; granddaughters Wendy Evilsizor of Marietta, Georgia; Danielle Baca of Dundee, Oregon; and great grandchildren Cole Wyatt Williams, Kennedy Jade Baca and Silver Evilsizor. Clarence P. Evilsizer, age 96, of Joplin, passed away at 3:32 a.m. Sunday, July 11, 2004, at Freeman Hospital West in Joplin following a lengthy illness. Mr. Evilsizer was born Jan. 7, 1908, in Butler, Mo. He owned the Tip Top Laundry in Lawton, Okla., during the 1950s and 1960s. He then moved to Montana and owned a large foothill cattle ranch (Triple Divide Ranch) located south of Glacier National Park and east of the Continental Divide. This 10,000 acre ranch was later bought by the Boone and Crockett Club for wildlife research and preservation purposes. After the Boone and Crockett purchase, the Triple Divide Ranch was renamed the Theodore Roosevelt Memorial Ranch and was the feature of several magazine and newspaper articles. He moved to Joplin, Mo.,, in 1978 and operated a farm in Saginaw.He was a member of the First Baptist Church of Lawton and was a member of the Joplin Elk’s Lodge.He married Bessie Walker on Jan. 29, 1929, in Miami, Okla. She preceded him in death on March 23, 1997. Survivors include a son, Thomas Evilsizer and his wife, Jimmie Lee, Lawton, Okla.; one daughter, Sharon Kay Durels and her husband, Walter, New York, N.Y.; nine grandchildren and 12 great-grandchildren. Graveside services will be at 11 a.m. Friday at the Highland Cemetery in Lawton, Okla, with Dr. Gary W. Cook officiating. The family will receive friends from 10 a.m. Friday until the service at the Becker Funeral Home in Lawton.

She was also preceded in death by her parents and her siblings: Aletta, Harold, Stewart, Fritz, Edward and Roy. Doris was a member of the Emanuel United Church of Christ and the Women's Fellowship Group. Lily Rose Evilsizer, 75, of Sanford died Sat Sept 11, 2004 at the Mid Michagan Medical Center. She was born on Jan 31, 1929, in Ludington, the daughter of the late Vern and Doris (Camp) Anderson. She married Robert Lawrence Evilsizer on June 29, 1946, in Midland; he predeceased her. She was a member of the Sanford American Legion Aux. Lily was a mom to everyone she knew. She had a great sense of humor; teacher to everyone and her heart welcomed everyone into her life. She loved camping, fishing, and spending time with her grandchildren. Surviving are her children and their spouses, Doris Jean and Gary Rudolph of Midland, Robert E and Lynn Evilsizer of Twin Lake, Melodie and Floyd Yarger of Ft Pierce, Fl, Katherine and Simeneh Araya of Lansing, Jim & Judy Evilsizer of Sanford and Ed and Darlene Bates of Weidman; 20 grandchildren, 23 great grandchildren and 2 gr great grandchildren; a sister Joyce Rynek of MIdland; and many nieces and nephews. He was born in Bellefontaine on Feb. 14, 1960, a son of Katherine Mae Lee Scott Evilsizor, who survives in Phoenix, and the late James Edward Evilsizor Sr. A brother, James Edward Evilsizor Jr., also preceded him in death. He also is survived by a daughter, Heather Marie Evilsizor of Toledo; brother, Pat (Kristy) Evilsizor of Huntsville; sisters, Vickie (Marvin) Kerr of DeGraff and Pamela Rae Berry and Jacqueline Lee Loy, both of Bellefontaine; and several nieces and nephews. A member of the Kenton Moose Lodge, he was an assistant coach for the Indian Lake Little Lakers football team and was an avid Ohio State Buckeye and Dallas Cowboy fan.

COX, Loretta M. 89, of Springfield, died Wednesday, September 15, 2004. She was born June 23, 1915 in Springfield, the daughter of Frank M. and Mary A. (Cline) Helfrick. Mrs. Cox retired from Robbins and Myers after 47 years. Her survivors include two sisters, Ann Evilsizor of Danville, California and Cora Rogers of LaFollet, Tennessee; several nieces and nephews; numerous great nieces and nephews; many great great nieces and nephews; and a few great great great nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Charles in 1990; three sisters, Gladys Randall, Marie Stone and Daisy Allen; and four brothers, Frank, Albert, Harry and Charlie Helfrick. A memorial service will be held Sunday, September 19, 2004 at 11:30 a.m. in the South Dayton Church of Christ, 300 South Main in Springboro, Ohio.
