Francis Joseph Guld
(165) was born in Kukujevci, Austria-Hungary on 16 August
1870. It is not known who his parents are. Francis married Barbara
Elizabeth Garatva (166) at an unknown date before 1900. Barbara
was born 4 December 1876 in Hungary, a daughter of Melcher Garatva.
Francis and Barbara together had seven children: Joseph (228),
born about 1900 in Austria-Hungary; Ana
(Anna Marie) (19), born 30 September 1901 in Pest, Austria-Hungary;
John (169), born 26 June 1905 in Austria-Hungary; Elizabeth
Barbara (168), born 2 December 1908 in Rankin, Allegheny
County, Pennsylvania; Marie (230), born 20 September 1910
in Rankin; Frank (167), born September 1912 in Pennsylvania;
and Barbara (229), born in 1915.
Barbara arrived in United States,
landing in New York on 30 September 1906, with her children Anna
and Joseph. They traveled on the ship Blucher out of Hamburg,
Germany, although Barbara's passport says that they left via
Bremen. They processed through Ellis Island. The ship manifest
does not include Francis, so it is not known when and how he
arrived in the US.
In the United States, Francis
and Barbara and their family lived in the Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania
area, variously residing in Swissvale, Rankin and Braddock. In
this country, Francis worked in the mills until he lost some
fingers in an industrial accident.
Barbara Garatva died at her home
on Duquesne Avenue in Swissvale, Allegheny County, Pennsylvania
on 1 November 1930. Francis died at home on Renova Street, Pittsburgh,
Pennsylvania on 30 August 1945. Sometime after the family arrived
in the Pittsburgh area, daughter Anna and her sisters decided
that the family name should be spelled 'Gould.' Francis and Barbara
are buried under that name in Section 13 of All
Saints Braddock Catholic Cemetery, Braddock, Allegheny County,
Pennsylvania.
