Thomas
Theodoric Evans, Jr. was born 22 April 1852 in Tredegar,
Monmouthshire, South Wales. He is the son of Thomas
Theodoric Evans (44)
and Margaret
Morgan (45). Thomas's
first marriage to Elizabeth C. Evans (27) ended in divorce,
with the final divorce decree dated 4 June 1881. His second marriage
was to Angeline E. Goff (28) 27 January 1880. Angeline
is a daughter of Alexander Goff (46) and Mary
Swier (47). Angeline
was born in Allegheny City (now Northside Pittsburgh), Allegheny
County, Pennsylvania 7 February 1856.
It
is not known when Thomas and his family emigrated to the United
States, but they lived in Baldwin Township, Allegheny County,
Pennsylvania, Thomas with his parents and sisters in 1870, according
to the 1870 US Census. His occupation is given as 'coal miner'
in that census. He was naturalized 9 October 1875 in Mayor's
Court, Scranton, Pennsylvania. Although he was originally a coal
miner, he developed black lung disease, and later became a Baptist
minister.
Thomas's first marriage to Elizabeth C. Evans (27) ended in divorce,
with the final divorce decree dated 4 June 1881. By this time,
he was living in Allegheny County, Pennsylvania, since the divorce
was granted by the Allegheny County Court of Common Pleas.
Thomas
married Angeline E. Goff (28) 27 January 1880.Together, they
had seven children: William T. (29), born 21 December
1879; Fredrick
Ednyfed (30),
born 1 July 1883; Mary Emma (31), born 25 November 1884; Benjamin
Griffith (32),
born 19 January 1886; Edward Locke (33), born 18 November 1888; Florence
Bertha (34),
born 5 May 1892; and Wesley Riggs (18), born 21 October 1895.
I do
not know where Thomas lived after he moved to the Pittsburgh
area, or just when he came. However, he was living on Pittsburgh's
Southside when he accepted a call to become pastor of a Baptist
Church in Bankesville in December of 1880. By 1901 he lived at
2 Michigan Street on Mount Washington in the Beltzhoover section
of Pittsburgh. In 1905, he lived at 12 Renwick Street, and by
1909, he lived at 9 Renwick Street, also on Mount Washington
in Beltzhoover. In 1910, when his son Fredrick died, he was Assistant
Pastor of the Chatham Street Welsh Baptist Church in Pittsburgh,
and lived at 4 Renwick Street. By 1918 the family lived at 186
Manton St (later 986 Manton Street), also in Beltzhoover, where
Thomas lived until his death on 13 October 1924. Angeline died
in the house on Manton Street 30 October 1923.
Thomas and Angeline are buried in Section D, Range 7, Lot 27-29-31,
