Hi, Carolyn, I have ancestors buried at St. Cecilias. I had not visited the website for awhile and really enjoyed all the new information and pictures. I live in Iowa but was able to visit the cemetery three years ago. A picture of the marker of my 2x great-grandmother is on the website but is not correctly identified. It is in very poor shape and I am trying to figure out a way to finance having it replaced. Attached is a one of several pictures I took while there in 2001. The current list on the website says the marker is for Nicholas Schroeder. Take a look at the picture again and you will see a broken piece that upside down says "Frances". Then the piece that is right side up in the photo says "wife of Nicholas Schroeder". The information I have for her is that Frances Girsch was born in February 1824 in Schockville, Lux. She died May 18, 1858, which is hard to read on the broken marker. Her mother, Susanna (Menz) Girsch, born c 1797, died May 11, 1854, should be buried there, too, possibly near Frances but we could not find a marker. I did contact the pastor a couple years ago asking if a new marker could be placed where Frances's broken marker is now and put both Frances Schroeder and her mother Susanna Girsch's name on it. He replied that it would be OK to do that. I just haven't found enough relatives yet willing to chip in to purchase such a marker. And then there's the matter of getting it out there and properly set in cement. Anyway, Nicholas Schroeder brought his four motherless children to Black Hawk Co, IA. He died in 1878 and is buried at St. Mary's Catholic church cemetery at Gilbertville, Black Hawk Co, IA. His marker is in a little better shape than his wife's. He never remarried. His father-in-law, Victor Girsch, husband of Susannah, also came to Iowa and is buried in the same cemetery here. He has a marker but it has only his name, no dates, but he died apparently between the 1870 and 1880 census. Nicholas Schroeder's father, Everhard or Everett Schroeder is also supposed to be at St. Cecilia's. Again we did not locate a marker. He was born in August 1770 in Lux., and died Nov, 1871, at age 101. Recently found him on the 1870 census in Sheldon Twp, age 99, so can't imagine that he wouldn't have been buried there. The surname is hard to track because of spelling variations such as Schreder, Schreeder, Shreder, Sweder, etc. There are several marriages between children in the Girsch, Schroeder, Gilley, Bernardy, Victor, etc. families with many of the descendants finding their way west to Iowa. I would be so pleased if you could correct the identification on Frances Schroeder's marker on line. I know a bit about how hard photographing cemeteries can be. I have done 35 complete cemeteries for Buchanan county, some 42,000 pictures which I make available on CDs. Correctly identifying them can be really difficult with older markers in poor condition. Thanks for your time and the great St C. website. Karen Finley kmf108@indytel.com
