City Cemetery

Partial Listings of Burials

The primary source material for this compilation is the 1852-1889 record book of St. Paul Lutheran Church, which was built at the corner of Court and Bond in former Saginaw City.  The Church keeps all the record books in a fireproof vault at the Education and Parish Center located at 2745 W. Genesee Avenue.  They ask that visitors call first to make arrangements to study the books in person.

It must be emphasized that this listing should not be expected to be complete.  In the first place, it is highly probable that individuals who were not members of St. Paul Lutheran Church were also buried at “City Cemetery”.  Such burials would not have been recorded in this book.  Secondly, there is the additional complication of several burials notated only “Saginaw City.  While it remains possible that these burials also took place in “City Cemetery”, they are not included because it is not certain that the “City Cemetery” was the only cemetery within the limits of Saginaw City during this period.  Only the burials containing both a reference to “City Cemetery” and to “Saginaw City” are included in this listing.

The two German phrases found referring to “City Cemetery” are “bei der Stadtkirchhof” and “naechst der Stadtkirchhof”, often abbreviated, which translate as “at the City Cemetery” and “near the City Cemetery”.  Any distinction in meaning between the two remains uncertain and it is likely that both can be taken to mean “at the City Cemetery”.  One of these phrases by itself is clearly not sufficient evidence of burial in “City Cemetery”, as is shown by several entries “naechst der Stadtkirchhof, East Saginaw”, which then refers to Brady Hill, and even a “naechst der Stadtkirchhof, Owosso”.

The small body of data compiled under these rather stringent criteria cover the period 1855-1869.  Because the last burial took place in 1869, the year that Oakwood was opened, it is quite certain that these burials did indeed take place at what is now known as “City Cemetery”, which was once located southeast from the corner of Emerson (now Lee) and Niagara.  All the bodies were supposedly moved to Oakwood during 1869 and 1870, and the land was then sold in 1871.  However, many bodies were missed in the process of relocation, as the following article from the Saginaw Evening News reveals:

While workmen were engaged in extending a water main at the plant of the Saginaw Manufacturing company this morning in the yard of the company they unearthed four skeletons.  The bodies were found about 2 ½ feet below the surface and were in old cedar boxes which had badly decayed.

The plant of the company is on the site of the cemetery of the old city of Saginaw and has not been used for 25 or 30 years.  The cemetery was bought by the old barrel factory and at the time workmen were paid to remove all of the bodies to other cemeteries and it was thought that the work had been very thorough.

H.J. Gilbert, vice president of the company is of the opinion that at the time the work of removal was being carried on these graves were overlooked possibly from the fact that traces of the graves had been obliterated.  The remains were placed in boxes and will be buried in a proper manner.

In running the trench other boxes which undoubtedly contain bodies or skeletons were found but it was not necessary to remove them and they will not be disturbed.

--Saginaw Evening News, Friday, September 8, 1899 p. 3

The present compilation, while not a transcription in the strictest sense, attempts to reflect the original source as much as is possible under the following guidelines:

1)      The burials have been renumbered (column one) in chronological order, which is not the order they are found in the book.  Reference to the page (second column) and line (third column) where the original entry can be found is given.  A lower case letter is used to distinguish between multiple numberings on the same page, ‘a’ for the first set, ‘b’ for the second, etc.

2)      Only the most important information was taken from each entry: as the name of the deceased (column 4); the date of death (columns 5, 6. 7); the age at death (columns 8,9,10); the disease which caused death and day of burial, when known (column 11); and the parents or spouse of the deceased (column 12).  The umlaut vowels have been written “ae”, “oe”, and “ue”.  In some cases, additional details were available, so inspection of the original source is strongly recommended.

3)      When possible, the information in the previous columns was supplemented or corrected by use of additional sources.  Reference to these sources is given in the form of notes (column 13).  Numbers in parentheses reflect the age entry as found in the original record, if it was supplemented or corrected.  An “StP” followed by a number indicates the page on which a birth date can be found in St. Paul’s baptismal records.  A “StJ” followed by a number indicates the page on which a birth date can be found in St. John’s burial records.  Incidentally, entries 1-16 of this listing are all found in St. John’s burial records, although the place of burial is not clearly evident from these.  An “SC” followed by a number indicates the page on which a death record can be found in the Saginaw County Clerk’s records.  An “OW” followed by two numbers indicates the location of reburial in Oakwood Cemetery.

The age entries in St. Paul’s church books, as a rule, are calculated using “calendar months” and not “thirty-day months”.  Evidence for this comes from entries (17, 28, 29, 54, 58, 62, 68, 73).  For example, the date of death in entry 17 is 06 Aug 1860, which is 6 days after 31 Jul 1860.  Thus, the date can be reckoned as 37 Jul 1860, or 1860-07-37.  Now subtraction of the birth date found in the baptismal record, 11 May 1860, or 1860-05-11, gives 00-02-26, agreeing with the original age entry.  Note that the number of days in the previous month is added when borrowing, not the number of days in the death month.  One would have obtained 00-02-25 with a “thirty-day month”.

Age entries were supplemented or corrected when the birth date from the baptismal record produced a different figure than that recorded, using “calendar months” as described above.  It is evident in some cases that the original record contains merely an abbreviated form given to the nearest week (1, 11, 42), month (6, 20, 25), quarter (8, 10, 35,), or year.  These differences are not properly considered errors on the part of the recorder.  When possible such values have been expanded into the year-month-day format, and the result is considered supplemented.  In other cases, it seems that the recorder made an actual error by miscounting one of the values by one (26, 56) using the thirty-day month method (48, 60), mixing baptismal date with birth date (21), or mixing burial date with death date (23, 67) in the calculation.  Such differences have been rectified, and the result is considered corrected.

Finally, the county death records for numbers 76 and 77 imply that the church records here give a burial date in place of a death date.  Separate death and burial dates are recorded for entries 72-75, but thereafter only one date is given.  Therefore, it is possible that the date given as a death date in 78 is also a burial date.  The same seems to be true for number 46, as addition of the recorded age, 01-02-15, to the date of birth, 1863-06-01, from the baptismal record gives a death date of 1864-08-16, not the recorded 1864-08-18.
