The McCarthy Family
John Augustus McCarthy was born in Australia, the youngest son of
Thomas Britiffe Skottowe. Thomas Britiffe Skottowe was a lieutenant in the 73d
(Highland) Regiment of Foot, under the command of Lachland McQuarrie. This
regiment was sent to Australia to replace the New South Wales Corp after the
rebellion against Governor Bligh.
In Australia, Thomas met and married Mary ann McCarty and had two
sons. Thomas served from 1811 to 1814 as Commandant of the penal colony in
Newcastle. There he observed the flora and fauna of the district and with the
cooperation of Richard Browne, a prisoner who was an artist, produced a
manuscript which has become an Australian classic.
Later Thomas was stationed in Ceylon, from where he, accompanied by
his eldest son, took ship for England; leaving his wife and younger son to follow
in a later ship. Unfortunately the ship carrying the father and older son was lost,
and when Mary and John Augustus arrived in England, the Skottowe family
refused to recognize her.
John Augustus, bitter at this rejection, stayed with his mother until her
death in 1832. Then, adopting his mother's surname John immigrated to Perth
County, Ontario, Canada. Apparently, even though he was not a medical doctor,
John was sent to Perth County by the Canada Company to assist the first settlers
during a Cholera epidemic. Records show that, in 1832, he stayed at Andrew
Helmer's Tavern, and that, in September 1835, he owned Lot 42, Concessions I &
II, in South Easthope Township. He thus became the first settler in Perth County
with a "mac" in his name.
In Perth County, John married Pauline Izard and had nine children. He
became the first Chief of Police of Stratford, Ontario; serving from 1872 until 1876.
He died on October 9, 1898 in Stratford.
John's third son and namesake, John Augustus McCarthy Jr. was born in
1845. This John never married, but he became the third Chief of Police of
Stratford; serving from 1888 until he died in the Knox Church fire in stratford in
1913.
