Donated by Brenda Brown of work given to her by Richard Wayne Fowler. Descendants of French Ancestor Caldwell By Richard Fowler Generation No. 1 1. FRENCH1 CALDWELL was born Abt. 1500 in Toulon, France, and died in Toulon, France. Notes for FRENCH CALDWELL: A story well-known in Caldwell family traditions is that of 3 brothers who sailed for the Barbarossa pirates and after their downfall returned to France where they robbed their king Francis I, and had to leave the country. Their descendants obtained a Douglas castle in Scotland, and the estate was known as Cauldewell, from which came thier name. Others claim the name of the French ancestors was Colville and that, being Protestant, they fled France in 1598 with thousands of other Huguenots, and obtained their estate from James I, King of Scotland and England, and agreed in so doing to furnish sons and warriors for "his wars'. Child of FRENCH CALDWELL is: 2. i. ALEXANDER2 CALDWELL, b. Abt. 1530, Toulon, France; d. Scotland. Generation No. 2 2. ALEXANDER2 CALDWELL (FRENCH1) was born Abt. 1530 in Toulon, France, and died in Scotland. Notes for ALEXANDER CALDWELL: This name was probably spelled Cauldewell at first from Anglo-Saxon words denoting wells of cool water. Child of ALEXANDER CALDWELL is: 3. i. WILLIAM3 CALDWELL, b. Abt. 1560, Scotland; d. Scotland. Generation No. 3 3. WILLIAM3 CALDWELL (ALEXANDER2, FRENCH1) was born Abt. 1560 in Scotland, and died in Scotland. Child of WILLIAM CALDWELL is: 4. i. JOHN4 CALDWELL, b. June 06, 1603, Prestwick, Scotland; d. Abt. 1640, County Enniskillen, Ireland. Generation No. 4 4. JOHN4 CALDWELL (WILLIAM3, ALEXANDER2, FRENCH1) was born June 06, 1603 in Prestwick, Scotland, and died Abt. 1640 in County Enniskillen, Ireland. He married MARY SWEETINHAM 1627. She was born Abt. 1602. Children of JOHN CALDWELL and MARY SWEETINHAM are: 5. i. JOHN5 CALDWELL, b. Abt. 1630, Londonderry, Ireland; d. Abt. 1698, Ballybogan, County Donegal, Ireland. ii. WILLIAM CALDWELL, b. Abt. 1632; m. ELIZABETH HUSTON, 1652, Londonderry, Ireland. Generation No. 5 5. JOHN5 CALDWELL (JOHN4, WILLIAM3, ALEXANDER2, FRENCH1) was born Abt. 1630 in Londonderry, Ireland, and died Abt. 1698 in Ballybogan, County Donegal, Ireland. He married MARY HOLMES 1651. She was born Abt. 1632 in County Derry, Ireland, and died Abt. 1691. Notes for MARY HOLMES: She was his second wife. Children of JOHN CALDWELL and MARY HOLMES are: i. MARGARET6 CALDWELL, b. Abt. 1654. 6. ii. JOSEPH CALDWELL, b. Abt. 1658, County Donegal, Ireland; d. 1730, County Donegal, Ireland. 7. iii. WILLIAM CALDWELL, b. Abt. 1672. Generation No. 6 6. JOSEPH6 CALDWELL (JOHN5, JOHN4, WILLIAM3, ALEXANDER2, FRENCH1) was born Abt. 1658 in County Donegal, Ireland, and died 1730 in County Donegal, Ireland. He married JANE MCGHIE 1682. She was born Abt. 1660. Children of JOSEPH CALDWELL and JANE MCGHIE are: 8. i. JOHN7 CALDWELL, b. 1683, County Donegal, Ireland; d. 1750, Lunenburg County, Virginia. ii. ELIZABETH CALDWELL, b. 1684, Ireland; m. JAMES MOOR. iii. MARGARET CALDWELL, b. 1686; d. Abt. 1740; m. ROBERT J. MCJUNKIN. iv. GEORGE CALDWELL, b. 1690; m. JANE PHILLIPS. v. ANDREW CALDWELL, b. 1692; m. ANN STEWART. vi. ROBERT CALDWELL, b. 1694. 9. vii. JEANNE JANE CALDWELL, b. 1698, County Donegal, Ireland; d. August 16, 1785, Prince Edward County, VA. 7. WILLIAM6 CALDWELL (JOHN5, JOHN4, WILLIAM3, ALEXANDER2, FRENCH1) was born Abt. 1672. He married ELIZABETH PORTER. She was born Abt. 1685. Child of WILLIAM CALDWELL and ELIZABETH PORTER is: 10. i. JENNETTE7 CALDWELL, b. 1730; d. 1822. Generation No. 7 8. JOHN7 CALDWELL (JOSEPH6, JOHN5, JOHN4, WILLIAM3, ALEXANDER2, FRENCH1) was born 1683 in County Donegal, Ireland, and died 1750 in Lunenburg County, Virginia. He married MARGARET PHILLIPS. She was born Abt. 1684, and died Abt. 1748. Notes for JOHN CALDWELL: He is known by Caldwell researchers as Captain John, who came to America from Northern Ireland in 1727, establishing a home in Lancaster, PA. By 1742, he was found in Virginia, in old Lunenberg County. There was a location called Caldwell's Settlement near Cub Creek, where he was in the records of the Cub Creek Presbyterian Church, one of the first in all that area. A Colonial land grant record shows John Caldwell with about 1045 acres, probably allowed because of the size of his family. There is an old Albemarle County record that shows that a family of John and Margaret Caldwell was there at one time, but I have no proof that it was the same. Children of JOHN CALDWELL and MARGARET PHILLIPS are: i. WILLIAM8 CALDWELL, b. 1704, Ireland; d. Abt. 1765, Virginia; m. REBECCA PARQUE WALKUP; b. Abt. 1709, Ireland or France; d. 1807, Newberry, SC. Notes for WILLIAM CALDWELL: He came from Ireland to Delaware to Pennsylvania then moved about 1749 to Cubb Creek in Charlotte County, Virginia where he died. His son John was the famous surveyor and he brought his mother and family to Newberry County. WIlliam was a Major in the French and Indian War. Notes for REBECCA PARQUE WALKUP: Some researches claim that the wife of William was Rebecca Walkup, others say it was Rebecca Parque. Margaret Watson, whose research and that of her father has a high degree of accuracy insists on the Walkup name. I am of the opinion that this person was the same. According to other research, she was the daughter of Jacque Parque, who was a Hugenot refugee from France, whose name was anglicized to Jim Parks. (Some research from Thomas Stallworth, and Verne Hoffman, Jr.) Agreement on the further ancestry of William is fairly consistent. Whoever Rebecca was, it appears that after the death of her husband William, she and her children came from Virginia to the Little River area of Newberry County, probably at the insistence of the surveryor and Revolutionary War Colonel (her son) John Caldwell, and that some of her children settled in Abbeville County. Later information says that she was married to John Walkup at age 16 in an arrangement by her father. He died 4 months after the marriage. Thus Rebecca was twice a widow. She was buried in Newberry County, SC. in the Caldwell Cemetery on Mudlick Creek. ii. THOMAS CALDWELL, b. 1706, County Donegal, Ireland; d. 1770, Virginia; m. MARY JANE PARKS. iii. DAVID CALDWELL, b. 1708; d. 1769; m. MARY DUDGEON, 1734; b. Abt. 1715. Notes for MARY DUDGEON: This name might possibly be Dugan. iv. MARGARET CALDWELL, b. Abt. 1712; m. WILLIAM ROGERS. v. JOHN CALDWELL, JR., b. Abt. 1713, Ireland; d. 1795, Tennessee; m. JANE KENNEDY, 1746, Lunenburg County, VA. vi. ROBERT CALDWELL, b. 1732; d. 1806, Kentucky; m. MARY LOGAN; b. 1734; d. 1815, Kentucky. Notes for ROBERT CALDWELL: It is somewhat difficult to reconcile that this son belongs in this family due to the 15 years difference in the next known previous sibling. It is reported that this Robert Caldwell was born in 1732 in Pennsylvania, then moved to Virginia, and finally moved to Mercer County Kentucky with others in the family. Others have reported his birth date as 1722 and 1719, which seems far more likely. He reportedly married Mary Logan, and raised at least 12 children. The second son, John C. Caldwell was Lt. Governor of Kentucky, and Caldwell County was named for him. Another son Samuel became a General of the Militia. Note that this placement could be in error. vii. JAMES CALDWELL, REV., b. April 18, 1734; d. 1781, New Jersey; m. HANNAH OGDEN, 1763; b. 1737; d. 1780, New Jersey. Notes for JAMES CALDWELL, REV.: It has been recorded that he was a chaplain in the regiment of Col. Elias Drayton during the Revolutionary War and that he was murdered by an assasin paid by the British. 9. JEANNE JANE7 CALDWELL (JOSEPH6, JOHN5, JOHN4, WILLIAM3, ALEXANDER2, FRENCH1) was born 1698 in County Donegal, Ireland, and died August 16, 1785 in Prince Edward County, VA. She married ALEXANDER RICHEY, LT. 1718, son of SAMUEL RICHEY and LYDIA MOORE. He was born 1698 in County Derry, Ireland, and died August 18, 1749 in Prince Edward County, Virginia. Notes for ALEXANDER RICHEY, LT.: He came from Ireland to Pennsylvania in about 1727. They lived for awhile in Lancaster County, PA, and later on went to Virginia. He died in Prince Edward County, Va. He served in the Virginia Militia in the early part of the French and Indian War. The name is also spelled Ritchey and Ritchie. His wife was part of the Caldwell family who moved later from Virginia to Newberry County. See Rebecca Walkup Parks. The Caldwells and Richeys seemed to have been neighbors in Ireland and moved together, landing in New Castle, Delaware in 1727. Many of the children and descendants also spelled their names RITCHIE. I may not have spelled it according to family preference in every case, as I was often uncertain. It seems this is where authenticity of records begins. He may not have had the name Samuel, however, this may have been a brother. What seems certain is that the RICHEY, CALHOUN and CALDWELL families came together or at least about the same time from Ulster to New Castle, Delaware on December 10, 1727 and then moved on into Pennsylvania. Children of JEANNE CALDWELL and ALEXANDER RICHEY are: i. AGNES8 RICHEY. ii. CATHRIN RICHEY. iii. MAREY RICHEY. iv. SAMUEL RICHEY. v. SUSANNA RICHEY. vi. JAMES RICHEY, SR., b. July 25, 1724, Northern Ireland; d. August 12, 1808, Old Abbeville County, SC; m. MARGARET CALDWELL, 1749, Amelia County, VA; b. January 04, 1728/29, Lancaster County, Pennsylvania; d. September 12, 1802, Shoals Junction, Abbeville County, SC. Notes for JAMES RICHEY, SR.: Came to Abbeville area about 1773 and claimed lands on Chickasaw Creek. Edith Greisser adds that James, Sr. did not bring his wife to the area from VA until after the war about 1785. Buried in the old Greenville Pres. Cemetery. Inscription on tomb stone: "Private , 2nd VA state Regt., Revolutionary War 25 Jul 1724-12 Aug 1808. Came to South Carolina from Amelia co. VA; Son of Jeanne Caldwell and Alexander Richey from Ireland to Prince Edward Co. Va." It is almost certain that he was one of the founders of "Greenvale" Church (now Greenville Presbyterian). HIs birth date has also been given as 1722 near Belfast, Ireland. Notes for MARGARET CALDWELL: Greenville Pres. Cemetery, Greenwood, SC vii. JOHN RICHEY, b. Abt. 1736, Pennsylvania; d. 1797, Prince Edward County, VA; m. JANE DAVIS, May 17, 1756, Prince Edward County, VA. Notes for JOHN RICHEY: His will was probated in Laurens 1819, (from Edith Greisser) and as a witness was Aven (Avant or Avent) Fuller, his residence might have been in the Beaverdam-Mountville area. viii. ALEXANDER RICHEY, JR., b. August 20, 1739; d. November 11, 1818; m. MARY WILSON, 1761, Virginia; d. May 08, 1817. Notes for ALEXANDER RICHEY, JR.: I have also been given a conflicting death date of January 11, 1818 10. JENNETTE7 CALDWELL (WILLIAM6, JOHN5, JOHN4, WILLIAM3, ALEXANDER2, FRENCH1) was born 1730, and died 1822. She married WILLIAM STEWART. He was born 1736, and died 1820. Child of JENNETTE CALDWELL and WILLIAM STEWART is: i. MARY CALDWELL8 STEWART, b. Abt. 1762, Amelia County, VA; d. Abt. 1832, South Carolina; m. (1) ROBERT J. RICHEY; b. 1754, Amelia County, VA; d. 1828, South Carolina; m. (2) JOHN WIER I, 1780. Notes for ROBERT J. RICHEY: Old Greenville Pres. Cemetery near Donalds.
Caldwell Descent
The Caldwells are told to be of the Albigenses and Waldenses of the Piedmont region on the borderline of Italy and France. This refers to the origin of the family when the surname in Italy was CADWALDI. The Cadwaldi Family was among the first of the groups to break off from the Roman Catholic Church during the Reformation, joining the Albigenses and Waldenses in the mountains of Northern Italy. They eventually migrated across the mountains to France.During religious persecution the Caldwell Clan found refuge in Toulon France near the Mediterranean Sea and became sea faring men.44 Stories of the Caldwell Clan relate to seamen on the Mediterranean in the later part of the 1500's working under pirates known as "Barbarosa". During the 1500's Huguenots (Protestant French) were expelled from France for religious reasons. It is written that from France the Caldwell family settled in Scotland. There were three brothers, John, Alexander, and Oliver who purchased the estate of an old Bishop named Douglass near Solway Firth in Scotland. It was situated near a cold spring or well and thus the name "Cauldwell" was given to the clan by the English King. Permission from the King for the purchase of the castle was on condition that the brothers John, Alexander and Oliver, late of Mount Arid, France, should have their estate known as Cauldwell and when the King required they should each send a son with twenty men of sound limb to aid in the wars of the King. The Cauldwell family was given a silver cup with engraved representation of a chieftain and 20 mounted men, all armed, and a fire burning on a hill over the words "Mount Arid", three vessels surrounded by high waves and a man drawing water from a well. On the bottom of the cup was engraved "Alexander Caldwell, Mount Aud France". Some Caldwell brothers were later recorded moving to Northern Ireland at the time of King James 1st. It is written that the sterling silver cup was actually seen by a Hugh Caldwell when he visited an Oliver Caldwell. Oliver Caldwell came from Ireland to Penna. 1754 and settled in Carlisle, Pa. It was written that the cup had been handed down fourteen generations. The above "romantic" story has probably got all truth to it but I feel that the facts have been molded into one tale instead of separate stories which occurred over a two hundred year period of time. For one reason, the Barbarosa brothers, pirates at best, called Khaii-ed-din and Aroud, lived and died in the 1500's. It was at that time, in the second part of the 1500's that the Huguenots were persecuted. Yet there are records of Cauldwell men in Scotland in the 1300's so the sur name of Cauldwell had been established in the 1300's. I therefore conclude that the first Caldwell men, settling near a cold well, had descendants who sailed the seas, making Toulon France their home base. They returned to the homestead in Scotland and bought a castle with money from their pirate days when the Protestants were being persecuted in France. That would be the time frame for James 1st to have been king. If in the late1700's the silver cup had been handed down for fourteen generations as claimed then would the 1500's have been the time of the gift?
William Caldwell, Prebendary of Glasgow, was Lord Chancellor of Scotland in 1349. Some descendants of the Caldwell Clan (Daniel, Joseph, John, Andrew, David) moved further, to Ireland, with Oliver Cromwell, 1599-1658, (whose grandmother was Ann of Caldwell), settling in Antrim and Kent. When Charles 2nd headed the English throne three of the brothers living in Ireland, John, David, Andrew, fled to America. The brother, Joseph Caldwell, died in Ireland. Daniel Caldwell lived out his life in Ireland but many of his children and grandchildren went to America at a later time, settling in Virginia, Rhode Island and Pennsylvania, with one of his grandsons, John Caldwell, settling in the Dutch Fork area of Newberry Co., S.C. Among the Caldwell family to come to America was John Caldwell and his wife Sarah Dillingham Caldwell who settled in Upswich, Mass. about 1650. The history of this family branch is told by Augustine Caldwell, published by William Parsons Lunt, Boston, 1873. There is a lake in Northern Ireland called "Yon". This lake contains a very fine emery sand which enters the pores of the wood and petrifies it in seven years. A relic of that wood was brought to America by Thomas H. Caldwell and was handed down until it came into possession of R. A. Caldwell. It was lost during the Civil War. In CALDWELL WORKBOOK by Mrs. Anderson. 1966, there is an extensive research into the Caldwell Name. There is so much, as to be impossible to enter everything without increasing this volume considerably. The two book WORKBOOK can be obtained in the Virginia State Library system with the call number of: CS/71/.014/1966/cop.2 CS/71/.014/1966/ supp.cop.2

Va. and the Cub Creek Church History state William Caldwell traveled with his brother John from Ireland to Penna. to Va. and was equally instrumental in the founding of Cub Creek Settlement. 11. John Caldwell, son of Joseph Caldwell and Jane McGhie Born Lifford Parish of Ballycogan, County Donegal, 1683. He married Jan. 4, 1703, (another version states 6/4/1703) to Margaret Phillips in County Derry, Ireland. 50 Margaret was the daughter of James Phillips. In 1727 John Caldwell and his wife, Margaret Phillips, along with other family members including four sons and a daughter, three married sisters and their husbands (Mrs. Elizabeth and James Moor, Mrs. Jane and Alexander Ritchey, Mrs. Catherine John Dudgeon) immigrated to America. On 12/10/1727 they landed at New Castle, Delaware aboard the sail ship EAGLE'S WING. The family group went first to Lancaster Co., Pa. at an area known as Chestnut Level and about 1738 to Lunenburg (now Charlotte) County, Virginia on land purchased from Richard kennon, a land speculator. About two hundred people comprised what was known as the Caldwell Settlement on the Cub Creek area of Virginia. Some Genealogy gives the date for the family migration to Virginia as about 1749 but it is duly recorded that the Cub Creek Church, which celebrated it's 250th anniversary in 1986 was founded by John Caldwell in 1738. The families traveled in large numbers thus providing defense against the dangers of the wilderness. Governor Gooch of Virginia was pleased to have the Caldwell Settlement at such a distance from Williamsburg because it would eliminate that much more of the wilderness surrounding the coastal areas. The pioneers were granted almost 30,000 acres, free muskets and exemption from taxation for ten years. It had been decided by the Governor that tobacco could be used as a legal currency by the pioneers since currency was not attainable in the wilderness. Letters of Naturalization would be granted to any aliens settling in the wilderness and by passing the "Toleration Act" religious freedom would be granted to all the settlers in Cub Creek. Until that time all Virginia Colonists, regardless of their religious affiliations had been required to serve in the vestry and pay tithes to the Established Church of England. Soon other members of the Caldwell family joined them. John Caldwell founded the Cub Creek Presbyterian Church, becoming an ELDER. John and his brother and son (both named William Caldwell) were among the Justices of the Peace in Lunenburg Co., Va. John was elected a member of the first vestry of Cumberland Parish, Lunenburg Co., Va. but refused to take the oath and resigned. In 1986 an article was written by a descendant, Anabel Stogner, who visited the site of the Caldwell Settlement in Virginia. The original Presbyterian Church in the settlement burned in 1940 but the stone foundation remained. The cemetery is still in use but there were no headstones with the name Caldwell on them. There were many fieldstones that had been used as grave markers. Captain John Caldwell died Oct. 6, 1750 at Cub Creek, Virginia. At the time of his death he owned a vast estate on Cub Creek and Lawes Creek of about 1080 acres. He is buried with his sons William, Thomas and David and most likely his wife who must have died prior to him, not being mentioned in his will.
