Eschbach - Eschbacher
Aeschbach-Aeschbacher
Eshbach - Eshbaugh - Ashbaugh
The family name of Eschbach is predominantly found in the Rhine
River valley of western Germany and Alsace, France and also in the United States. In the year 2001 there were 466 Eschbach families
living in Germany; 168 families in France and just over 500 families in the Unites States.
There were 57 Eschbachs families in Switzerland, 19 in the Netherlands, 15 in Australia,
13 in Canada and 9 in Austria. The Eschbachs
in the United States are descended from both Eschbach and Eschbacher immigrants of the
18th, 19th and 20th centuries. The American names - Eshbach, Eshbaugh and Ashbaugh are
derived from Eschbach or Eschbacher immigrants of the 18th century. In the United States
were about 300 Ashbaughs; 191 Eshbachs; 180 Eshbaughs; 126 Aeschbachs; 93 Eschbachers; 84 Aeschbachers and 26 Eschbaughs.
The specific spelling of Eschbach
and Eschbacher are of the Franconnian dialect of Middle High German. In Switzerland the Alamannic dialect of Upper High
German is spoken where the name is spelled Aeschbach and Aeschbacher. Prior to 1600
the Aeschbachers lived mostly in the Emme River valley (the Emmental) in Bern
Canton and were of four main village areas; Eggiwil, Lauperswil-Ruderswil, Lutzelfulsh and
Trachselwald. The Aeschbachs lived in Aargau
Canton and were of three main villages areas; Rupprewil, Leutwil and Reinach. The names Eschbach-Aeschbach
mean; Ash tree by a Brook. The names Eschbacher-Aeschbacher mean someone from
the place of Eschbach or Dweller near
the Brook where an Ash tree grows. The origins of the names are not known. It can be assumed that the origins are found in
the central to upper Rhine River valley and/or in Switzerland. There are stories of Eschbachs and Eschbach
villages in the Rhine River valley as early as the Dark Ages. One story is about two Eschbach brothers who saved
the life of Charlemagne (742-814). Charlemagne was on a hunt in the forest one day when
suddenly a boar crossed his path and almost killed him. Charlemagne surely would have been
killed if it were not for the two Eschbach brothers who rescued him. Due to this fact, Charlemagne made both brothers
Knights. Charlemagne was King of the Franks from 768 to 814. Its documented in 1396 at the Monastery of
Ettenheim the Abbot, Jakob of Eschbach, was
murdered. The Abbot came from the old noble
family of Eschbach of the village of Eschbach near Hagenaue (north of Strasbourg), Alsace,
France. The village got its name from the
noble family who lived there around 1200/1300 or possibly earlier. One can only wonder if the Eschbach noble family
at Eschbach were descended from the two brothers who were knighted by Charlemange? Today there are Eschbachs living in the local
area, but a local gentleman said: He
does not believe the Eschbachs living in the area are related to the Abbot of
1396 because they are not an old Ettenheim family and that they moved here from some
other region.
The area surrounding the present
village of Eschbach near Bad Homburg (north of Frankfurt), Germany has been habituated
since about 1,800 BC. Roman walls remain to
this today, proving that farming existed in the local area as early 200 AD. This village of Eschbach was first document as a
village in 772 and the first church was documented in 774.
During the time of Charlemagne the town was the property of the Baron of Ingelheim. In 1416 the church was owned and controlled by
the Archbishop of Mainz.
In 893 King Amulf gave the Monastery
of St. Maximin in Trier a portion of his lands, which included a number of towns and
villages. Four years later in 897 the
Kings son, Zwentibold, confirmed his fathers gift. Mentioned in the documents was the village of
Ascapach (Eschbach). Today the village is known as Laubus Eschbach near Limburg (north of
Frankfurt). There is an Eschbach village west
of Landau and also another east of Koblenz, Germany.
Even though there is documentation of Eschbachs and Eschbach villages in the
central Rhine valley for the past 1,200 years, this does give a census of how many
Eschbachs actually lived there. The true numbers may have been small. This is supported by
the fact that the number of Eschbachs living in Germany and France today total only 634
families. The central Rhine River valley is also known as the Alsace and the Palatinate
(Pfalz). Generally speaking; the Palatinate is east of the Rhine in Germany and the Alsace
is west of the Rhine in France.
Separate from the villages in the
Alsace and Palatinate are three Eschbach villages in southwestern Germany. One village is
north of Waldshut and was first documented as a village in 1288. Its documented in town literature
lived the Holdevinus of Eschbach in 1150, a service man of Zahringer.
The other two villages are near Freiburg - one east and the other southwest of
Freiburg. These three villages are clustered
in a region laying just across the Rhine River from Switzerland. I believe the history of these three villages are
in association with the Aeschbachs of Aargau, Switzerland.
The history of the western Europe is
riddled with many wars, famines and upheavals, causing great loss of life and the Rhine
Valley was the center of many of those conflicts. The Eschbachs living there faced an
unyielding challenge of survival everyday. Its
difficult to know who many Eschbachs actually survived past 1650. Even though the names of the villages survived
time, many villagers probably did not. I believe a pivotal point in history for the
Eschbachs was just after the Thirty Years War (1618-1648).
After the war the Alsace and Palatinate laid waste. There are reports that as many
as 75% of the local population died during the war years. Local kingdom rulers were forced
to invite settlers from other German speaking regions to rebuild and repopulate the area. Swiss migrants were especially numerous. This
migration into the Alsace and Palatinate surely included the Aeschbachs and Aeschbachers
of Switzerland. Once in the Rhine valley the spelling of the names were altered to
Eschbacher or Eschbach, not necessarily respectfully.
The name Eschbach is likely derived from both Aeschbacher and Aeschbach equally. The Waldshut-Freiburg area was probably not as
severely effected by the war as other areas and therefore its very likely that the
Eschbachs of the Waldshut-Freiburg area also migrated into the Alsace and Palatinate.
Today there are seven known branches
of Eschbach in Alsace, France. None of the
seven is able to trace its lineage beyond the year 1650.
Its possible that the records of the Alsace where destroyed by wars and time.
This may explain one reason why there is no credible genealogy documentation beyond 1650. Its also possible that many Eschbachs living
in the Alsace today are actually descended from ancestors who migrated from the
Waldshut-Freiburg area and/or Switzerland.
The migration of Eschbachs and
Eschbachers from the Alsace and Palatinate to Pennsylvania began about 1728. There were a total of nine adult Eschbach and/or
Eschbacher immigrants during the 18th century; John and Frederick Eschbach (brothers)
arrived in the 1720s; Christian, Peter and John Eschbacher (brothers) arrived in the
late 1730s; Andres Eschbacher in 1744;
Simon Eschbach in 1749; Christian and John Eschbacher (brothers) in 1749-50. All nine initially settled in southeastern
Pennsylvania. This area is also known as the Pennsylvania Dutch Country. The name has nothing to do with Holland. The English speaking pioneers mispronounced
Pennsylvania Deutsch (German) as Pennsylvania Dutch (Holland). Most German speaking immigrants who came to
Pennsylvania from 1725 to 1775 were recorded as coming from the Palatinate. Even though most immigrants were documented as
living in the Palatinate prior to coming to America, many descendants of these immigrants
are able to trace their ancestors to Switzerland. The Swiss influence in the Pennsylvania
Dutch country was very strong. The
architectural style of the local barn is known as: Bank Barn. Bank
barns are only found in southeast Pennsylvania. The barns are built into the side of a
hill or embankment, a practice that originated in Switzerland.
1737 Immigrant, Peter Eschbacher, was
born at Lauperswil, Switzerland and was exiled in 1711.
Peter married Elizabeth Bechtel about 1735 at Mannheim, Germany. The Bechtel family
originated from Schaffhausen, Switzerland. Peters
son, Christian Eschbach, married Catharina Stauffer about 1760 in Pennsylvania. The Stauffer family also originated from
Switzerland, fleeing to Altzheim, Germany in 1697. The
genealogy of the Pennsylvania Eschbachs is not an uncommon story. Many Pennsylvanians are descended from ancestors
who came from the Alsace or the Palatinate, but their true origins lie in Switzerland. There were many Swiss in the Alsace and Palatinate
who never migrated to Pennsylvania. Elizabeth Bechtels father and brother (David and
Hans Bechtel) both remained at Mannheim. In
1710 Peter Aeschbacher is documented taking Communion at Schluchtern (north of Frankfurt). Peter was the son of Oswald Aeschbacher of
Ruderswil, Switzerland. There were others who were documented as being exiled from
Switzerland in 1711. Anna Aeschbacher,
widow, with two son and two daughters, Mathyes Aeschbacher, age 26 and Hans Aeschbacher,
age 23 all remained in Europe and never migrated to Pennsylvania. Therefore, it is my belief that the majority of
the Eschbachs in Germany and France today are ultimately descended from Swiss ancestors.
Today there are many branches stemming
from the root name ESCHBACH found
throughout the world . Today there is only one documented branch in Germany. France has seven branches established by Jean
Louis Eschbach of Erstein, France, The United States has ten branches established by Edwin
Eshbach of Miami.
The following families have been researched
and established. The number denotes the year the family was first established as a
lineage. In the United States the year
denotes the year of immigration. I am aware there are many
branches yet to be established and recorded. Anyone
wishing to add their family branch (lineage) to this web page please contact Edwin Eshbach
at (ESHESH@aol.com). Ed Eshbach, 4708 S.W. 67th Ave., #L-21, Miami, Fl., 33155 USA.

Aeschbacher Family of Lauperswil, Bern,
Switzeland..
The
Aeschbachers of Lauperswil and Ruderswil were descended from Lienhard Aeschbacher of
Wittenbach, a small village between the two villages.
After the Reformation most Aeschbachers in Switzerland were Reformed and not
Anabaptist (Mennonite). A few Aeschbachers
are documented as being Anabaptists. I
believe the Pennsylvania Mennonite Eschbachs-Eshbachs
of the 18th and 19th Centuries were descended from Heinrich Aeschbacher (b. 1613)
of Ruderswil.

1737 - The Berks-Montgomery Eschbach-Eshbach-Eshbaugh Family.
The majority of
the Eschbachs and Eshbachs in southeastern Pennsylvnia today are descended from two
Mennonite Eschbacher brothers who immigrated to Philadelphia in the late 1730s. The two brothers, Peter and Johannes Eschbacher,
were the sons of Peter Aeschbacher, b. 1665, of Lauperswil, Bern, Switzerland. Peter, the
elder, and his family were exiled from Switzerland in 1711. It is believed the family
settled at Mannheim, Germany from 1711 to 1737-38. Today the Eschbach-Eshbach family is
divided into two branches stemming from the two brothers. Peter is the forebear to the
Berks-Montgomery County family and Johannes is the forebear to the Lancaster County
family. The origins of the family date to
1496 at Wittenbach, a village between Lauperswil and Ruderswil, Switzerland.
