1728- John Eschbach, born about 1700. There is no record
of John’s immigration to
America. John is recorded at New Hanover Twp, Montgomery Co, Pa. in 1728.
John had three sons; Andrew, John and Frederick. About 1760 the family
migrated to Adams Co., Pa.. John’s
son, Andrew Ashbaugh remained Adams Co.
John’s son, John Ashbaugh, eventually migrated to Fairfield Co., Ohio.
John’s
son, Frederick Ashbaugh, settled at Barree Twp, Bedford Co. Pa. until about
1810. Frederick and his son, Frederick, migrated to Ontario, Canada. Today the
descendants spell the name as ASHBAUGH.

1737- Peter Eschbacher, born 1694 at Laupersville, Bern,
Switzerland. Peter
immigrated in 1737, settling at Bally, Berks Co., Pa. Peter’s son, Christian
Eschbach (1737-1809) remained at Bally and fathered eight children, eight
reaching adulthood, all remained in the Berks Co area. Today the descendants
spell the name as ESCHBACH, ESHBACH or ESHBAUGH. Peter’s
brother,
John, immigrated in 1738. (Religion- Mennonite).
1738- John Eschbacher, born 1702 at Laupersville, Bern,
Switzerland. John
immigrated in 1738 and first settled with his brother, Peter, at Bally. About 1745
John migrated to Lancaster Co.. John had one son, John Eschbach, born about
1740. The descendants spell the name as ESHBACH. (Religion - Mennonite).
1744- Andrew Eschbacher, born abt 1700, immigrated in 1744 and
first settled at
Lehigh Co. and later migrated to Lebanon County, Pa.. Andrew had four sons;
Martin, Andrew, Daniel and Adam. Andrew, Jr remained at Lebanon Co.. Martin,
Daniel and Adam all migrated to Westmoreland or Armstrong Co, Pa. Today the
descendants spell the name as ASHBAUGH. (Religion

1749 and settled
at
western Berks Co., Pa.. Simon had one son, Simon (1766-1848). Simon, Jr.
migrated
to Washington Co., Pa. and had sons; John, Simon, Jacob, Solomon,
William,
Abraham and Absalom. Today the descendants
spell the name as

Christian Eschbacher, born abt 1714. Christian immigrated in 1749
with
son, Christian Eschbach, born abt 1733, Christian
settled at Salisbury Twp,
Lehigh
Co., Pa.. The descendants spell the name as ESCHBACH, ESHBACH or
ESHBAUGH.. Christian’s brother immigrated in 1750. (Religion - Reformed).

1816- John Eschbach, born in 1798. John immigrated in 1816 to Annapolis,
Maryland. John settled at Baltimore. John had sons; Lee (or Leo), John, Frederick,
Joseph,
Mattias, Francis and Lewis. (Religion - Catholic).
Why The Different
Spellings of the Name Eschbach?
I believe there are three factors that
contributed to the various spellings of Eschbach. First, It’s important to remember that prior
to 1850 most rural peoples could not read or write. Second, our ancestors all spoke German
for the first few generations in America and later many spoke Pennsylvania Dutch (mixture
of German and English) up until the 20th Century. The English speaking government workers
who recorded immigration records, documented land sales, recorded deeds or conducted the
census probably spoke little or no German or Pennsylvania Dutch. And thirdly, the name Eschbach in German is
actually pronounced similar to Eshbaugh. In
American-English today, ESCH- is pronounced similar to -esh as in fresh. -BACH is pronounced with a strong K,
sounding similar to -bock or Eshbock. But in
German, -BACH is pronounced softer and further back in the throat, sounding similar to
-baugh. It’s unknown if the German
language has different accents in its various regions, causing ESCH- to be pronounced
either as ESH or ASH. This could explain the
variations of Eshbaugh and Ashbaugh for the name Eschbach. The name Eschbach literally
means; “ASH tree by a BROOK.
