Head Quarters 11th  Tennessee Volunteer Cavalry

Cumberland Gap Tenn August 15th 1864

G. M. Bascom Lieutenant Colonel and

A. A. Gen Dept of the Ohio

        Colonel,

I have the honor here with to render my resignation as Lieutenant Colonel of the Eleventh Regiment of Tennessee Volunteer Cavalry, = unconditionally and immediately =.  I am in no ways indebted to the United States Government.  I am not under arrest, there are no charges preferred against me, nor can my pay be effected in any way as I am prepared to make all requisite returns.  I was last paid by Major Scovel to include the 30th day of June 1864.  I have been twice wounded in the service, once in the shoulder, and once in the hip which renders me incapable of performing arduous service or enduring a winter's campaign.

            Reuben A. Davis
            Lieutenant Col Commanding
            11th Tennessee Vol Cavalry
