Ezekiel Staggs lived a long and interesting life. There have been more records found on Ezekiel than any of his descendants.
Luckily, at that time, there was only one Staggs with his first name. Ezekiel moved around a lot and in those days it was not as
easy to travel as it is now. He was first found in Franklin Co. Tenn. in 1812. Next, in Jefferson Co., Ala. in 1823. By 1840 He
was in Pontotoc Co. Miss. Probably by 1855 he had left Miss. and in 1860, he shows up in Sevier Co. Ark., which is right on
the Oklahoma border (then Indian Territory). In 1870 he was living in Mt. Ida, Montgomery Co., Ark., which is a little west of
Hot Springs Ark. where he died.

Samuel were all in Jefferson Co., AL, Ezekiel by 1823, Zachariah and Samuel by 1825. On Sept. 20, 1825, Zachariah
consented to Samuel's marrage to Catharine Speer. Samuel was too old to be a son of Zachariah, but must have been a

SOURCE NOTES:
At this time our Staggs line has been traced back to Ezekiel Staggs, born 1790 in S.C. Ezekiel's father has not been proven, but may beWilliamson Staggs. The name Williamson has only been found twice. In theJefferson Co., Ala. land records, Deed book #3, page 402; William Dulaneyand wife sold to Williamson Staggs, 11 September 1829. Ezekiel was in the1830 Jefferson Co., Ala. Census. In the 1850 Wayne Co., Tenn. Census;Williamson, age 85, is listed with Abraham Staggs, age 52. As these arethe only records found with the name Williamson, he may have also gone bythe name William. The 1830 & 1840 Tenn. Census show several Williams andone would be about the right age. Ezekiel Staggs was born in S.C. in1790, the only Staggs found in the S.C. Head of Families Census for 1790was a William, with 5 males under the age of 16 years old in GreenvilleCo. Some researchers list two sons for Williamson, Abraham and Joseph.Living near Ezekiel in Ala. and Miss. was a Zachariah Staggs that mayhave been his brother. Zachariah named one of his sons Ezekiel. The 1850Wayne Co., Tenn. Census also has a James Staggs, age 60, born in S.C. Thenames Abraham, Joseph, James, Ezekiel and Zachariah are all biblicalnames and while they were not uncommon for that time it could be a namingpattern. Could these be the five sons of Williamson (William)?

Ezekiel Staggs lived a long and interesting life. There have been morerecords found on Ezekiel than any of his descendants. Luckily, at thattime, there was only one Staggs with his first name. Notes for ZACHARIAH STAGGS:
It has not been proved that Zachariah was a brother of Ezekiel and Samuel, but they were in the sames places at the same time.
Zachariah was married in Franklin Co., TN in 1816 and Ezekiel was on the Tax rolls there in 1812. Ezekiel, Zachariah and
Samuel were all in Jefferson Co., AL, Ezekiel by 1823, Zachariah and Samuel by 1825. On Sept. 20, 1825, Zachariah
consented to Samuel's marrage to Catharine Speer. Samuel was too old to be a son of Zachariah, but must have been a
relative, probable a brother. On Sept. 20, 1839, Ezekiel and Zachariah bought land in Jefferson Co. near each other. Also
buying land on that date and in the same area was Benjamin Staggs and James M. Staggs. Their relationship to Ezekiel and
Zachariah is unknown. In 1840, Zachariah was in Sumter Co., AL, Ezekiel was in Pontotoc Co., MS and Samuel was in
Walker Co., AL. By 1850 Zachariah was in Hot Springs Co., AR and Samuel was in Dallas Co., AR. Ezekiel was in AR by

Ezekiel moved arounda lot and in those days it was not as easy to travel as it is now. He wasfirst found in Franklin Co. Tenn. in 1812. Next, in Jefferson Co., Ala.in 1823. By 1840 He was in Pontotoc Co. Miss. Probably by 1855 he hadleft Miss. and in 1860, he shows up in Sevier Co. Ark., which is right onthe Oklahoma border (then Indian Territory). In 1870 he was living in Mt.Ida, Montgomery Co., Ark., which is a little west of Hot Springs Ark.where he died.
Here is a list of records found.

1812, Franklin Co., Tenn. tax records. Ezekiel Staggs

6/2/1823, Jefferson Co., Ala., BLM records. Cash Entry Sale to EzekielStaggs, two 80-acre tracts.
(CASH ENTRY ACT; The Act of April 24, 1820 set the minimum price for saleof public land at $1.25 an acre, and the minimum unit of sale at 80acres. Public lands were initially offered by district land offices atpre-announced, scheduled public auctions. Then, if unsold, lands becameavailable for purchase at the $1.25 minimum price on afirst-come-first-served basis.)

1840, Pontotoc Co., Miss. Census..Ezekiel Staggs...2 males under 5...1male 5 to 10...3 males 10 to 15...2 males 15 to 20... 2 males 20 to30...1 male 50 to 60

(note; If Nancy Staggs is the daughter shown as under 5 in the 1830census, she would have been under 15 at her marriage. The daughter 10 to15 in the 1830 census could be the female shown as 20 to 30 in the 1840census. Where was Ezekiel's wife? The early census' were almost useless. Also ages have to be taken with a grain of salt.)
