George Birten STAGGS [Parents] 1, 2, 3, 4, 5 was born 6, 7, 8, 9 14 Feb 1860 in Jackson Co. Ark.. He died 10, 11, 12 12 Sep 1897 in Oppelo, Conway Co., Ark. and was buried 13, 14, 15 in Probably Wolfe Cem., W. of Oppello. George married 16, 17 Anna Josephine THOMPSON on 29 Jan 1882 in Conway Co., Ark..

George B. Staggs is my ancestor and he has been very hard totrace. A family tree given to me shows his middle name as Birten, butthis may be a misprint. It was probably Burton, named after his mother'sbrother, Burton L. Berry. Cemetery records of his children list his wifeas Anna Josephine Thompson. There was an Anna Josephine Thompson livingnear George in Woodruff Co. in 1860 and 1870, but there is a recordshowing her marriage to a Miller. (since writing this, I found a marriagerecord in Woodruff Co. for Annie J. Thompson, age 18, to R. H. Nesbitt, age 24. Recorded 5/15/1875) In 1880, George was in the Perry Co., Ark.Census in the household of Amanda Welch. In the next household was AnnaNesbith and her 6 month old daughter, Hearriet (spelling on some census'is worse than mine) in the household of Mary Edmonds and listed as Mary'ssister. Amanda Welch was a sister of Anna and Mary and they had all livedclose together in Woodruff Co. On Jan. 29, 1882, Conway Co., Ark. showsthe marriage of George Staggs to Annie Nesbeth. Two of George's childrenshow their place of birth as Oppello Ark., which is in Conway Co. justnorth of Perry Co. Family history says that George died in 1897 and Annadied in 1899 or 1900. George and two of their sons are probably buried inWolf cemetery west of Oppelo. It is unknown where Anna is buried. Afamily story said that after the death of George, Anna and the childrenwent to live with Dexter Welsh, who was the son of her sister Amanda. Allthe children were in Pope Co., Ark. in 1910. Lewis, Walter and Robertwere living with John and Mildred Staggs Hottinger. Charles was livingwith the family of Rue E. Bonds, who raised him.

Records found on George B. Staggs:

1860, Jackson Co., Ark. census with Eli & Mary Staggs

1870, Woodruff Co., Ark. census with William & Nancy J. Gilleon

1880, Perry Co., Ark. census

1/29/1882, Conway Co., Ark., Marriage record of George Staggs to AnnieNesbeth

1887, George Staggs paid tax on 2 horses, 4 cows, 1 mule, 5 hogs & 1wagon

1889, G. Staggs paid tax on 3 horses, 6 cows, 2 mules, 6 hogs & 1 wagon

1893, G. B. Staggs paid tax on 3 horses, 10 cows, 1 mule, 10 hogs & 1carriage

1894, G. B. Staggs paid tax on 3 horses, 7 cows, 2 mules, 12 hogs & 1carriage

Mildred Staggs Hottinger, oldest child of George & Anna, passeddown some of George's papers. Among the papers were; Tax receipts from1884 to 1897, One from Perry Co., the rest from Conway Co. Mortgage andloan papers with some paid receipts. There are two Warranty Deed thatshow George and Anna owned land that had been owned by Amanda Welch. Twoletters written to Anna from her sister Mary Jane Edmonds about land thatMary still owned in either Conway or Perry Co. One letter to George fromhis Uncle, James M. Berry. Three, rather desperate, letters to George andAnna from Dollie Spriggs, the daughter of George's older sister Susan.Dollie did not seem to get along with her father and wanted to come livewith her Uncle George. The last letter from Dollie was dated Nov. 1896.There was an account book, dated from 1889 to 1897, that looks as thoughthey ran some kind of store. It listed goods bought and amounts owed, also the number of days different men had work for George. It looks asthought George and Anna were fairly prosperous for those days.

Anna Josephine THOMPSON 1, 2, 3, 4 was born 5, 6, 7, 8 1858 in Jackson Co. Ark.. She died 9, 10, 11 14 Jul 1899 in Oppelo, Conway Co., Ark.. Anna married 12, 13 George Birten STAGGS on 29 Jan 1882 in Conway Co., Ark..

LDS files show Anna Thompson married a Miller. I have seen that recordand believe it is a different Anna Thompson. I have a copy of theWoodruff Co. marr. recorded June 23. 1875 of R. H. Nesbitt to Annie J.Thompson. The Perry Co., AR 1880 Census shows Annie NESBETT, sister, andHarriet NESBITT, niece, in the household of Mary Edmonds. I have lettersto Annie from M. J. Edmonds that start, Dear Sister. I believe her namewas Mary Jane after her mother, Mary Jane Forehand. In the Perry Co., AR1880 census, the household just before Mary Edmonds was Amanda Welch, thewidow of James F. Welch. Amanda's Great-grandaughter showed me a songbook that had belonged to Amanda and it was signed, Anna Amanda ThompsonWelch. Also living in Amanda's house was George Staggs. 8/8/1883, Woodruff Co., Ark., Robert and Minnie Staggs petition the Courtto appoint M. A. Coates their guardian, with E. Crossett and B. L. Berryhis deputes.

The story of what happened to Eli, Mary and Nancy J. Staggs comesfrom the family of Florence Arminda (Minnie) Staggs. Mary Berry Staggsdied shortly after George was born in 1860. The Children probably livedwith the Berry family while Eli was gone to war. When he returned, Elimarried Nancy Jane Berry. Mary and Nancy were the daughters of JarrettBerry and the sisters of Burton L. Berry. The twins, Robert and Minnie, were born March 10, 1866. At the birth or a short time later, Eli went toget a doctor and was shot and killed by a Union trooper. Between 1866 and1870, Nancy Berry Staggs married William Gilleon. Nancy died sometimebefore 1880.

Another Staggs married into the Berry family. There is a marriagerecord in Pontotoc Co., Miss. For John M. Staggs to Lirena Berry, anotherdaughter of Jarrett Berry. The 1860 Jackson Co., Ark. Census shows Johnand Lany Staggs with 4-year-old daughter Mittie living next door toJarrett Berry. In 1865 John Milton Staggs, the son of William Staggs, married Mary Rogers. In 1880, John and Mary Staggs and children are inthe Woodruff Co. Census. It looks like another Berry daughter died young.

Mary BERRY 1, 2, 3 was born 4 1832 in Bibb Co., Ala.. She died 5, 6 1860 in Woodruff Co., Ark. Mary married 7, 8 Eli STAGGS on 4 Apr 1852 in Pontotoc Co., MS.
