Childhood

My Grandfather Magnus Engstrom was born Jan. 25, 1834, in Segling, Sweden. He and his wife, Liza Janson, joined the Church and came to Utah. They settled in Grantsville. They took out their endowments in Oct. 1863.

On Nov. 10, 1864, a daughter, Matilda Josephine, was born to them. Dec. 16, 1867, a son, Joseph William was born. He was my Father.

Huntsville

When William was just a few months old, the family moved to Ogden Valley and settled in Huntsville. Grandmother's mother and brother had come from Sweden with them and shared their home.

Magnus built a log house on a beautiful corner lot. It was in the shape of T. It was in the lower part of the T shaped house that Great Grandmother Jensson and her son Andrew lived. They both seemed very old to me as a child. Great Grandmother loved to see us and tried to entertain the children by playing games with them. The game I remember was placing my hands on hers and passing them over and over. She always had soda or sweet crackers to give to us.

Four more children were born to Magnus and his wife in Huntsville. A son, Charles Albert, in 1870, Anna Emmaline, in 1873, Malinda Marie, in 1875, and Amanda Elizabeth, 1878.

Matilda died when she was 8 years old - Malinda when she was 2 years. Amanda lived to be about 14 years.

Vocation

Grandfather was a shoemaker by trade. In a little room just off from the kitchen he had a little shoe shop where he worked repairing shoes. This along with a few chickens, cows and pig's, a garden, fruit trees, and berry bushes supported the family.

I remember the wonderful pies my Grandmother made from the gooseberries and apples they grew.

Later Years

When Caroline was 30 years old she became very ill end passed away in Feb. 1903. This seemed too much for her Mother to bear after losing her other daughters - and the following May she also passed away.

This left Magnus all alone. It was very hard for him to get along as the years went by. He suffered from rhuematism, and it was very difficult for him to get around.

I remember my Mother sending me to his house almost every day with a warm dinner she had prepared for him and clothes she had washed.

He died Aug. 13,1913, - ten years after his wife and daughter. My Father and Uncle Albert were the only ones left in the family.
