Interview with Granddaughter, Helen Engstrom

This interview was conducted by Linda Rehart asking the questions. Helen Engstrom responded with her answers from her memory of James Manning who was Helen's paternal grandfather. The interviews were recorded on a cassette tape and then later was transcribed and edited by Linda Rehart. That document was entered into the computer by Donald Engstrom on 5 June 2007.

Question: What do you know about your grandfather, James Manning?

Answer: There isn't much to tell about Mr. Manning, Grandpa Manning. My father was four years old when he was killed and his sister, Aunt Clara, was a year and a half younger. He left his wife Annie, and went to work. One man said that he had been drinking and shouldn't have gone to work. He had fallen off of the train and grandpa, my father, said that they brought parts of his body home in a Cracker Jacks box which is really kind of hard to believe, too. He left a wife with not much existence for living, money or otherwise, and she had to get out and work hard and that might have been the reason that she had Cord Manning, her son, promise that he would never take a drink. This is a promise that he kept through out his life.
