Alison Jamieson was born on July 20, 1862, in Craighall, Inveresk, Midlothian, Scotland. Her parents were William Jamieson and Elizabeth Gordon. William Jamieson was born September 12, 1838, in Inveresk, Edinburgh, Scotland. (Inveresk later became part of Midlothian County.) He was a son of Peter Jameson and Mary Millar. William was a collier or coal miner like his father. He married Elizabeth Gordon also of New Craighall at Inveresk on June 9, 1865. They were members of the Church of Scotland. (Presbyterian) Elizabeth Gordon was born about 1838 in Scotland.
Little is known of Alison's childhood and fami1y. She is thought to have had at least one sister. She probably met James Vass in the Inveresk area. He was also a coal miner and from Pathhead, New Cumnock, Ayr, Scotland. He may have moved to the Inveresk area when the mines in the New Cumnock area were not doing well. At this time the entire coal mining industry of Scotland was not doing well and so, like many others, James decided to immigrate to the United States. (James had been born on September 17, 1856, in Pathead to Margaret Park and William Vass.)
It is not known for sure what James did upon coming to the United States, but probably worked as a coal miner as he lived in Streator, Illinois, which is a coal mining area. According to the 1900 census, he came to the U.S. in 1880, and Alison came in 1881. And so, James probably worked for a while then sent for Alison to come over. Also according to the census, they were married in 1881, so it is assumed that they were married in the U.S. Their first child, William, was born February 10, 1882, the place is unknown. A second son, Andrew, was born February 10, 1884, in Streator, La Salle, Illinois. By November, 1884, they moved to Laramie, Albany, Wyoming where James worked as a coal miner. In 1897 they moved to the Harmony area West of Laramie, living on a ranch.
Their first daughter, Lizzie, was born January 7, 1887, in Laramie, and died a month later. A year later, James was born and died sixteen months later. A second daughter, also named Lizzie or Elizabeth was born January 20, 1890. On August 27, 1891, while William was visiting an uncle in Shobe, Missouri, he died. George David was born the following February 22, 1892, then John on April 15, 1896, and Isabel Marie on August 23, 1901. The remaining five children lived to adulthood, although John was killed in France in World War I, and Andrew died in the flu epidemic of 1918.
Not a whole lot is known about Alison. She was an excellent seamstress and probably made all the clothes for the family. She taught her daughter, Lizzie, to sew by giving her scraps of material to make doll clothes. She was probably a good cook and made homemade ice cream for birthdays and holidays. She was raised in the Presbyterian Church and had all her children baptized in this religion. When the family moved to Harmony, they helped to build and then faithfully attended the community church. When living in Laramie, they boarded the school teacher, and when one of the teachers was taking piano lessons, Alison let Lizzie go with her so that she could also learn to play the piano. She was able to read and write. Alison died on April 26, 1903. from complications following a miscarriage. At the time Lizzie was 13 and took over the household responsibilities, including care of the younger children. That she was able to do this well and became an excellent homemaker herself is a tribute to the example and teachings of her mother. Alison was buried in Greenhill cemetery in Laramie, Wyoming.
