Brief History of Minnie Olsen Hansen. Author unknown

I was born Aug 27, 1878 in Richfield, Utah. My parents were Oluf Olsen and Mary Olava Larson. I had only a grade school education, and my early life was in some ways a little hard.

I was blessed with very good parents who did everything they could for their small family -- only three, my sister, Matilda, brother Oluf and me, but they lost one girl named Clara when she was very young.

My father's health broke down soon after they married (about 5 of 6 years) so he was not able to work at hard work. He suffered with Rheumatism from that time until his death July 22, 1898. He was a very good father and worked at the things he could do until the last few years of his life when he was an invalid. He did truck gardening and berries and fruits, which we children helped with. He did some shoe repairing, carded wool, knitted stockings and tried in every way to do something as long as he could walk and work with his hands.

My mother was a good woman. She did all se could to support us. She wove cloth, carpets and rugs -- thousands of yards -- she always had something in the loom. My first school dress was a cardinal red cloth that father carded -- she spun -- dyed and wove -- someone made it for me. It was trimmed in black velvet.

We lived in a very humble home. Two adobe rooms. Then added on a back lean-to so mother could have her loom in one part and her cook stove in the other end. So we could keep our two rooms nicer -- all had mud roofs, factory cloth for roofs. We were happy and did not want for food or clothing.

When I finished what schooling I could get I got work clerking in a store which I did for about 2 1/2 years. Then I got married and we built our first home near my mothers, so we helped each other the best we could.

Eight of our eleven children were born there and she helped me much with our children. Mother died Nov 6, 1916 from a blood clot on the brain caused by a fall. A year or so later we traded our home for a larger one and about seven years later we moved to Salt Lake City.

As stated in the brief history of my husband, he passed away Oct 9th 1933. It was a great sorrow and trial for us but I have struggled on doing the best I could. I am thankful for my good children which have been a great comfort to me.

Another great sorrow came to us when our dear daughter Vivian passed away Feb. 13, 1938 two days after she had given birth to a dear little son. She married Francis Lodefink, June 9, 1933 in the Salt Lake Temple and was very happy, but in Nov. about the middle of the month she became very ill -- a bad heart -- then a nervous break down, and she was in bed for about a year. We had Drs. and gave he every care we could then she became better slowly, but month after month she got stronger nd was again able to get out some and could take care of her home quite well, but seemed she could not regain her complete health again. It was a heart ailment that could not be over come. She was so patient and sweet through it all. She had so Many friend. Everyone who knew her loved her. She was so happy in the hope of having a baby but it seems she was wanted for another mission and her heart could not carry on longer. We all miss her and cherish her memory and we have her dear little son to love and care for until there is again a happy reunion. The baby is named Francis Steven Lodefink.
