George Washington English
George Washington English was
born in Martinsburg, Pennsylvania. He was a clergyman who also
engaged in business as an insurance manager. He was educated
at the Milroy Academy in Milroy, Pennsylvania. After graduation
he went on to learn the printers trade and worked for newspapers
In 1877 George English abandoned
journalism and accepted the general agency for Western
Pennsylvania of the Berkshire Life Insurance Company of Pittsfield,
Massachusetts. Five years later, at the company's request,
he moved to New York City to become general manager of the
department including the entire states of New York and New
Jersey. Mr. English's ability resulted in one of the largest
insurance agencies of that state. He was an active member
of several fraternal and cultural organizations.
October 1879 was the year
George Washington English married Emily Crawford and this
union produced three children.
