George Washington English

George Washington English was born in Martinsburg, Pennsylvania. He was a clergyman who also engaged in business as an insurance manager. He was educated at the Milroy Academy in Milroy, Pennsylvania. After graduation he went on to learn the printers trade and worked for newspapers until 1876.

In 1877 George English abandoned journalism and accepted the general agency for Western Pennsylvania of the Berkshire Life Insurance Company of Pittsfield, Massachusetts. Five years later, at the company's request, he moved to New York City to become general manager of the department including the entire states of New York and New Jersey. Mr. English's ability resulted in one of the largest insurance agencies of that state. He was an active member of several fraternal and cultural organizations.

October 1879 was the year George Washington English married Emily Crawford and this union produced three children.
