James English, 4th child and 2nd son of William English and Mary Jane Davidson English, was born Nov. 21, 1811 in County Antrim, Ireland and emigrated to America with his family the following year. The family lived in Charleston, S.C. for 1 year and then moved to Green County, TN. About 1815 they moved to the area of Springboro, OH. where James' mother, Mary Jane, died. In 1823 William English purchased land in Darke County, OH. where he developed a farm and orchard and later on a tile mill. In later years he divided the land between his three sons and made his home with James and his family who occupied the 12 room home William had built for his family. That home, in Versailles, OH., is now on the National Register of Historic Places.

Porter English, 3rd child and 1st son of James and Lucretia
Russell English, was born May 13,1841 in Wayne Twp. Darke Co.
OH.

He served in the Civil War as a Pvt. Co.F, 152 Reg. OH (NG) in May and June of 1864 and as a Pvt. Co.F, 78 Reg. OH (Volunteers) from 9-24-1864 to 6-3-1865. He suffered the effects of bad food, water, weather and living conditions, which effects were with him the rest of his life. (from Military Record Info.)

Porter was married to Mary Ann (Molly) Metzcar Sept. 13,1866. They lived in Darke Co. OH, where all of their children were born, until sometime around 1900 at which time they moved to Barry Co. MI. As was often the sad story of the times, Mary Ann's Bible lists 5 children who died at or from days to a few months after birth, including a set of twin boys. Four children grew to adulthood. Porter and Mary Ann are both buried at Fuller Cemetery, Hastings, Barry Co., MI. about 1/2 mile from where they lived. Many descendants are also buried at this cemetery.

Thomas English, 4th living child and 3rd living son of Porter and Mary Ann Metzcar English, was born March 5, 1891 in Versailles, OH.
When he was still a young boy, the family moved to Barry Co., MI. where Thomas went to school with and lived across the road from the young lady who later became his wife, Pearl Adele Backus. Thomas and Pearl spent the first few years of their married life with their 3 young boys in the Hastings, Barry Co., MI area. When it became necessary for Thomas to find work other than the farming he had been doing, the family moved to Lansing, Ingham Co. MI.
