Ellen was a midwife for the local families of The lagoon.
Kathleen Chifley wrote "I remember her and have the impression of a rather big lady. she must have been very fit as she thought nothing of walking miles and miles to see people. Mom told me she often acted as a midwife and Mum could remember seeing her going off on a horse to help a neighbour. they must have been grand people in those days.
My mother also remembered ellen Jones as a big woman, but said that she and her brothers and sisters were frightened of her.
Ellen could not write as she signed her marriage registration with a cross.
Th witness at the marriage was patrick donnelly, the priest, and the personal witnessess were Andrew English and Mary Ann English.

THE NATIONAL ADVOCATE. Monday May 7 1906.An old and respected resident of Lagoon in the person of Mr. Patrick Jones
passed away rather suddenly at his residence shortly before noon on Saturday.
Deceased was walking in front of his house about half and hour before
apparently in the best of health, but he was suddenly siezed with illness. He
went inside and lay down, and conscious of his apparent end he summonsed the
members of his family to his bedside and dabe them farewell. Deceased, who was about 80 years of age, leaves a widow and large family.
Patrick Johns was listed in the 1881-2 Sand's country directory as Jones, Patrick The Lagoons.
Although I have listed Patrick's birthplace as Kilkenny - this is what his wife Ellen informed the Registrar at the time of death, his son Daniel, my grandfather (Robin) told Jack Jones (Uncal Jack from coffs harbour who died in 1999) and his daughter Maggie told kathleen Chifley ahat " He came from County cork. Kathleen says that he was supposed to have come to Australia with his brother. They were aged 15 & 16 don't know who was the eldest. A few days after arriving the brother died. so patrick was alone in a strange country. Uncle Jack also visited Co. Cork during the war and againe in the 1970's and apart from kissing the Blarney Stone and drinking lots of Guinness, was told that there were no Jonen's in Ireland. He stated however that he beleived that the original name may have been Sweeney. he did not say where this information came from.

Information received from Aileen Roberson 113 Redfern St. Cowra 2794
Of the Foran brothers John seemed more determined to make his mark in the
world. For almost 2 yrs he was constantly defying the law. On 16 December 1865 he was convicted at Rockley of illegally using a horse receiving 3 months
imprisonment. Until 1867 he was comparatively quiet but in April of that year
he and Lawrence Cummings were suspected of stealing a horse from William
Bromielow (probably Brownlow) On April 4 William Todd of Stoney Creek was
robbed of an amount of money. A discription of one of the men fitted that of
John Foran. Later in the same month both Cummings and Foran held up an Inn
Keeper, Edward Lock. at Dirty Swamp near Mutton Falls. The Bathurst Times
covered in detail, an account of this robbery on 17 April 1867. From there
Foran and Cummings proceeded to Webb's Store at Mutton Falls where their
approach was noticed and Cummings was shot in the face. On May 15, Holmes and
Foran (Probaby John) stole 2 horses then on the 29th following they were
suspected of arson on Mr. Lock's shed at Dirty Swamp. October 18, John was
again convicted of 3 charges of robbery with arms and sentenced to 15 yrs on
the road gang, serving only between 6 and 7 years before receiving a
conditional pardon in 1874.
John worked hard during his marriage as did his wife and family. He would seem that John learned his lesson while in prison and was extra extra honest in his later life. At one stage John and Catherine lived at Foley's Creek, after indulging in a few drinks, John argued with Catherine, waving a candle around as he did. The curtains caught fire and it wasn`t long before the thatched cottage was consumed. Thankfully their quarters were in three seperate buildings. John also kept a pet crow, a magpie and a fox. The fox was short lived after it escaped and beheaded Catherines hens. John had a reputation as a cranky man but they saw no sign of it themselves.John always carried boiled lollies in his pocket for his grandchildren, complete with tobacco pieces and fluff. Catherine had a hard life, she reared 10 of her own besides several of their grandchildren. When she could get to Mass she had to walk some distance.
She hated to see anything killed and at one time when John was away she was
forced to kill a sheep for eating. She cried all the way through the process.
From the book Rogues, Vagabonds and Bloody Thieves by Edgar Peniz, the
following is written the dates are different to that of the above accounts.

No more was heard of the 19 year old John Foran until January 31st 1867.
when four bushrangers (three wearing marks) stuck up and robbed about 12 people on the Carcoar Road, and stole their firearms, money and 2 of their horses. The gang then moved on to a public house where they robbed the proprietor. On February 5th, a man named James Kelly was arrested in connection with the spate of hold ups, whilst the following day Cornelius Foran was arrested for the same crime and, on February 11th he was joined by his brothers Patrick and John.
After being charged, Cornelius and John were granted bail.
But had young John learned his lesson yet? Not on your life, because on

April 12th 1867 accompanied by the nororious Lawrence Cummins, he assisted in
bailing up and robbing the occupants of a public house at Diry Swamp. The two villains then went to Mutton's Falls, where they attempted to rob the store owned by Mrs.Anne Webb. However, this time they were opposed, and Cummins was wounded in the face and neck by a shot fired by Mrs. Webb's third son, Robert, who was just recovering from a attack of fever, and the two bandits were forced to flee. Four day after the abortive raid at Mutton Falls, James Kelly and Patrick Foran were convicted at Bathurst of the robberies on the Carcoar Road etc. and sentenced to 10 years each on the roads. On April25th the two bushrangers, plus 13 other prisoners, left Bathurst under police escort to serve their terms in Berrima gaol. On the 30th (whilst still enrout) the prisoners made an attempt to escape, during which several were wounded, and a police constable died from wounds he received during the battle. Only two of the prisoners succeeded in getting away. John Foran was captured on July 24th and his crooked mate, Cummins also fell into police hands, when he was tracked to the hut of his brother-in-law a man named Cramp.
John Foran and Lawrence Cummins were tried at Bathurst Court on October 18th
1867 John Foran was convicted of 3 charges of robbery under arms and sentenced to 15 years on the road, while Cummins was convicted of 6 charges and sentenced to 30 years. The case of the Kessey, Foran, Grady and Cummins families, is another classic example of those colonial families who were continually involved in criminal pursuits.
At the time of his daughters birth in 1878 John was a Shoemaker living Kings
Creek Macquirie Plains.
Story as told by Rosemary Lenton in file.
John was able to obtain a land grant.

Notes for Dennis CURRAN
Mrs Pauline Doherty 54 Shropshir St. Miller 2168. sent the following notes.
A copy of Dennis Diary. I do not know when he first met elizabeth English the first entry in which she is mentioned is July 20, 1895.
The William referred to is his brothers and Mrs. William is Williams wife
Margaret Hamilton.
Mrs. David Frew is his sister Sarah whom he normally called Mrs. Frew.
Dennis was a miner at Hillgrove during the period of the diarys.
Elizabeth was a domestic servant, possibly from the orphanage into domestic
service.
The Jones refered to would have been Elizabeth;s mothers family.
Harry and Ted English would have been brothers Henry and Edward (Elizabeth
Brothers)
Denis was very musical, playing a number of insturments. There is no record of Elizabeth playing any instruments. Eight of their nine children were taught to play some musical instruments. My mother was the only one who did not play.
There are many parts of the diary I have not been able to dicipher. I believe
that Denis taught himself to write by keeping the diarys, and of course some
words have become blurred with photo copying.
My mother was born at Wallsend (near Newcastle) Denis may have come to this
area to continue in the mining industry.
Witness to his marriage where William Curran and Kathleen McCarthy.
