Joe was sent out to Australia to scout the country and see what opportunities existed, with the view that the family might follow him.

Dear Lizzie,
Keep up the weekly despatch as we look forward to letter day and let me know in
your next letter who got J. Ross's job as I have wondered many a time.
This is a good country and we are alright here. Mrs Moore is a proper mother to
me and we have our weekly meeting every Sunday, all the Geordies being there
for tea and we all go to church together. Tell Mrs Polwarth, Joe is alright out
here and we are coming home together one day.
Yours Joe.
These are views of the blacklegs loading coal at Cessnock guarded by mounted
police. The chap in white is the station master. Hope you have not to pay 4
d
for these.
Yours Joe.
All the mounted troopers have left the district now & things look civilised
again. This one's for Mary's album.
Yours Joe
