PNEUMONIA TAKES GEORGE H. SKINKLE
ILLNESS OF TWO WEEKS ENDS IN DEATH
OF WELL KNOWN KALAMAZOO MAN

George H. Skinkle, one of Kalamazoo's best known residents, died at 6 o'clock this morning at his home 818 South Burdick Street. Death followed an attack of pneumonia, from which Mr. Skinkle was ill about two weeks, although he had been in poor health for several months.

Mr. Skinkle was born in New York state, May 19, 1850, and was therefore two weeks less than 68 years of age. Coming to Kalamazoo in boyhood, he always made his home [here]. Learning the plumbers trade he followed that vocation many years, and was in business with Charles Skinkle and or the firm name of Skinkle brothers. In young manhood Mr. Skinkle became a member of Kalamazoo's volunteer fire department remaining as a part-pay fireman for several years after the department was reorganized. He was a charter member of Barr ak lodge No. 270, I.O.O.F. He was also a member of Kalamazoo lodge No. 50, B.O.P. Elks, and of Kalamazoo lodge No. 22, F. and A.M.

CITY EMPLOYEE MANY YEARS

For 18 years Mr. Skinkle was a faithful employee of the city, being connected with the meter department. He retired several years ago, and for some time has held a clerkship in the Kennedy cigar store. During his entire life Mr. Skinkle had the faculty of making and keeping friends. He was a man of gentle disposition and possessed a fund of humor that brought cheer to all who came in contact with him.

Mr. Skinkle leaves a wife, a daughter, Mrs. William Donnelly, and a sister, Mrs. George Coleman of Cincinnati. Funeral will be held from Van Halt's chapel, Burdick and Cedar streeets at 2 o'clock Tuesday afternoon. Rev. J. W. Dunning, D.D. officiating, and will be in charge of Kalamazoo lodge of Elks. Burial in Riverside cemetery. Friends may view the body at the chapel Sunday.

Funeral of George H. Skinkle will be held at 2 o'clock Tuesday afternoon from VanHalt's chapel, Bundrick and Cedar streets. Rev. J. W. Dunning, D.D. will preach the funeral sermon. Kalamazoo lodge No. 50, B.P.O. Elks will have charge of the funeral. Burial in Riverside cemetery.

Obituary of George Skinkle - Kalamazoo Gazette, May 8, 1918, p. 13.

Impressive services marked the funeral of the late George H. Skinkle at VanHalt's chapel Tuesday afternoon. Rev. John Wirt Dunning, D.D. preached the funeral sermon. Burial was in Riverside cemetery, where services at the grave were conducted by Kalamazoo lodge No. 50, B.P.O. Elks of which order Mr. Skinkle had been a memeber for many years.

A wealth of floral contributions attested the high esteem in which he was held by his friends, and it has been said that everyone who knew George Skinkle was his friend. For 18 years he was an employee of the city being connected with teh water commissioner's office, his re-appointment coming annually without regard to teh political complexion of the city council, which thus showed its appreciation for his faithful services.

The funeral was largely attended not only by members of the various fraternal organizations of which he as a member but by many others, and the procession to teh cemetery was a long one. The bearers were Benjamin VanBecheve, Herman Watson, Henry Waruf, E. A. Weeks, Marinus VanBeck and Theodore _______.

from reading through the depositions of Henry's wife, Sarah, and his brothers and sisters, in Sarah's effort to receive Henry's pension from the war, I believe the reason for his court martial was due to his misrepresentation of his asthma when he enlisted in the army. WJG

Record 11th MI Infantry, Vol. 11, p. 161 Reorganized Eleventh Infantry

Skinkel, or Skinkle, Henry. Enlisted in company C, (reorganized) Eleventh Infantry, Feb 7, 1865, at Madison, for 1 year, age 43. Mustered Feb 7, 1865. Mustered out at Nashville, Tenn., Sept. 16, 1865.

Several depositions were made by Sarah L. Skinkle and Henry's brothers and sisters as to wheather or not Henry had asthma before he enlisted in military. Ultimately, Sarah's efforts to receive Henry's pension from the war were rejected based mainly on these depositions. For some reason, not readily known, Sarah did not get along with Henry's sister, Bethiah or her husband, Charles Carpenter. One deposition, from Henry's brother John, even states that Sarah and Henry did not live happily together for several years and had even lived apart for some time.
