                3. Elizabeth D. House
                4. Thomas House

Notes
General:
Census records show that Abner M. HOUSE was born in North Carolina in 1814. He married Hettie, ca. 1834, probably somewhere in Georgia since census records show that Hettie was born in Georgia in 1814.

The first record of Abner M. HOUSE is in the 1840 Census of Talbot County, Georgia.

The 1850 Census of Talbot County, Talbotton, Dwelling 572, shows the following about Abner and his family:

Abner HOUSE Age 36 Carpenter $3,000.00 Real Estate Born: NC
Hetty 40 GA
Lucius 15 GA Attended School
Eliza 12 GA Attended School
Elizabeth 10 GA Attended School
Thomas 6 months GA

The Inferior County Minutes of Talbot County show that Abner M. HOUSE was a carpenter and contracted with the county to do many jobs, the first of which appears in May, 1844 for work done on the jail. These minutes also show that he worked on the courthouse and built many of the bridges in the county. A few of these are as follows:

Inferior Court Minutes for County Purpose, Vol. A. 1828-1855

January Term 1851
A. M. HOUSE

"Ordered that the County Treasurer pay A. M. HOUSE four hundred and eighty- eight dollars for building Bridge across Lazar Creek at Dennis Mill."

January Term 1852
Bridge

"In the matter of the Bridge at Rayland's Mill built by A. M. HOUSE, said HOUSE agreed to rebuild said bridge and the court agreed to pay said HOUSE for the time said bridge takes beyond the time prescribed in said HOUSE bond at the same rate as the original contract, the Court reserving to themselves the right to determine the time when a new Bridge shall be built or prescribe replaced from time to time when in their opinion they are required."

Monday, June 21, 1852
A. M. HOUSE

Present their Honors William B. Marshall, James C. Lennard, Henry Jones, Benson Maxwell and John N. Carter.

"Ordered that the County Treasurer pay Abner M. HOUSE one hundred dollars to enable him to go on and complete the Bridge now being built by him below Couch Rayland's Mill on Lazar Creek."

Things seemed to be running smoothly with A. M. HOUSE and the Commissioners until the March Term of 1853, then, for some reason unknown, the Commissioners broke their contract with him. It was the beginning of a lengthy court battle between HOUSE and the Commissioners that would last until the March Term, 1859, of the Superior Court of Talbot County.

Inferior Court Minutes for County Purpose, Vol. A. 1828-1855

March Term 1853

"Ordered that K. Couch, B. Trice, J. H. Bryan, Wm. T. Holmes and Robert H. Dixon be appointed Commissioners to let out the building of a Bridge at Rayland Couch's Mill either above or below the Mill and to let out such a bridge as in their opinion the public wants require."

Abner M. HOUSE in turn files suit in Superior Court for breach of contract against the Justices of the Inferior Court of Talbot County.

The final verdict was reached during the March Term, 1859, of the Talbot County Superior Court:

The State on the relation of Abner M. HOUSE vs. Justices Inferior Court of Talbot County. {Mandamus}

Final Verdict (Cont.)

"We the jury find for the plaintiff the sum of three hundred dollars with interest from the first of September eighteen hundred and fifty two with cost of suit.
Edward Giddens, foreman

Abner had finally won his battle with the Justices of the Inferior Court, but at a great price. During the time of this suit Abner was unable to pay his bills and was sued several times himself by individuals unable to collect debts owed by him.

In December of 1859, he sold his house in Talbotton and moved his family to Okolona, Mississippi.

Below is the deed showing the sale of his house. It also shows exactly where the HOUSE family lived in Talbotton:

State of Georgia,
County of Talbot

During the War Between the States, Abner M. HOUSE was a private in Captain Eli Abbott's Co., Mississippi Cavalry, Chickasaw County, Miss., organized June 9, 1863.

Tragedy struck the HOUSE family during the 1860's. Their son, Lucius T. HOUSE, was killed September 20, 1863, in the Battle of Chickamauga; their daughter, Elizabeth D. died August 29, 1868; and Hettie, Abner's wife, died December 29, 1868. Elizabeth and Hettie House are buried in Citizen's Cemetery, next to the Confederate Cemetery, south of Okolona, Miss.

What became of Abner M. HOUSE after the death of his wife is unknown. He is not found in the 1870 U.S. Census of Chickasaw County, Mississippi, nor is there an estate settlement found there. He apparently left Okolona. 25

INTRODUCTION

In compiling this family history many different sources have been used. Local county records such as marriages, deeds, estate and court records found in the Georgia State Archives in Atlanta, Georgia, have given much information. Federal Census Records found in the Federal Records Center in East Point, Georgia, have been a valuable source. The National Archives, Washington, D. C., holds many pension files of the Revolutionary Period. Other information has been found in the Library of the Daughters of teh American Revolution, Washington, D. C., and teh Washington Memorial Library in Macon, Georgia. I have cited an original document to verify each statement made in this history.

All of these lines were in the Colonies before the Revolution. Many fought in the Revolution. The service of two of them is given herein.

Our WILLIAMS line is Welsh.

The HOUSE and RICHARDSON families came from England. The HOUSE family settled in Connecticut, while the RICHARDSON's settled in Virginia.

The JORDAN's are believed to originally have been French Hugenots who fled to England due to religious persecution during the 1500's. The first of our JORDAN line to come to the Colonies was Samuel JORDAN who came to Virginia in 1610 and settled on the South side of the James River just below the confluence of the Appomattox. Samuel was a member of the first House of Burgesses, a representative of James City.

The JORDAN's were in Georgia before the Revolution. Captain Charles JORDAN was Commander in Chief of Fort Rogers. His three son, Samuel, Charles II, and Dempsey have pension papers in teh National Archives telling of their service in Georgia during the Revolution.

The HOUSE, RICHARDSON, and WILLIAMS families came from North Carolina to Georgia in the early 1800's.

With the exception of the HOUSE family, who were carpenters and businessmen, our ancestors were farmers with large tracts of land and slaves to cultivate them. Before the War Between the States they all had a good life. Unfortunately, they were all directly in Sherman's path in his March to the Sea. The utter devastation of this terrible war left its mark on them for several generations.

There are many records available to those interested in genealogical research. I have spent many happy hours searching for records of our ancestors. I sincerely hope that generations to come will enjoy having this information as much as I have enjoyed gathering it.
